One thing is--where does the money come from?

I don't know what it's like at other universities, but Oregon is a "state-supported" school with the state contributing only about 10% of what it costs to run the university. The university does a lot of fundraising. Some donors make huge contributions to the academic and/or sports side. (And there are many big donors other than the one that immediately springs to mind. 🙂 )

Miami is a private school. A few year's back Miami bought a company providing hospital and general health services. After a few year's in the red, the company returned a net $400M+ for Miami last year.

Great point. Want to look at coaching salaries, look at what UF is paying Billy Napier. However, much or all of these public university coaching salaries are paid by boosters. Such is the case with Mel Tucker's new deal at Michigan State.

The real problem with these contracts is when the coach qualifies for state retirement benefits.  Donors may pay the salary, but the taxpayers pay the retirement.  Aren't Aliotti and Bellotti paid the highest state employee retirements?

Bellotti gets a half-million a year in income...guaranteed.  This does not count the millions paid to him by the AD over the years.

...for which they receive a tax-deductible receipt... I think that might be the point.
