BIG NEWS: NCAA Moves To Contain Transfer Portal Free Agency

Recommended Posts

I pulled this off the FishDuck Feed... The NCCA established two windows football players can enter the Transfer Portal in. These rules will go into effect for the coming 2022 - 2023 season!

The first is for 45 days after the Championship Pairings are made - or when the bowl selections are announced.

The second window May 1st - 15th is the two weeks after Spring ball ends.

Players are still allowed a one-time transfer and retain immediate eligibility. The unlimited transfer rule was rejected.

There is no more jumping into the Portal all year long. QBs who lose the fall camp battle for QB1 will no longer be able to jump in the Portal at the end of camp. Players might as well stay on the roster for the season and see what playing time they get, unless they plan to use a redshirt year.

This will make the two transfer windows see furious action as teams compete to sign players.

I expect the NIL (Jordan Addison and USC) backchannel recruiting of players trying to convince them to enter the Portal will peak before these two windows.

What do you Duck fans think of the changes? Looks like we keep Ty and Butters for the whole season now as the Portal will be closed!

The board did not, however, approve the unlimited transfer concept

Still has plenty of time for athletes to make their decision, but also gives teams a window to know when they need to be looking for players.  I like it.

The clock is ticking on when the injunction will be filed.

The first attempt at putting some rules and regulations on transfers.

I do believe players as student athletes should have the ability to transfer once. Many regular students have that right. However, as student athletes also get all the scholarship and sports related perks and are apart of a giant sports apparatus that gives them value, NIL value at that, there need to be some rules around this wild and crazy free agency.

The NCAA has the power to set the rules for the Transfer Portal, that's not in dispute.

I don't think a judge is going to grant an injunction allowing for the Portal to be open fulltime. They have two windows for a 60 day total they can enter the portal.

If a judge did grant an injunction it would really cut the legs out from under the NCCA. What would be next?

An injunction allowing players to sign letters of intent all year long?

Could make it interesting for coaches on deciding on recruiting high school players and "shopping" in the portal.

The NCAA has the power

Not so sure the NCAA has much, if any, power left.

They have been causing a shortage of poly grip for years now.

The NCAA sure got smacked down with the NIL, but still have the power on the portal and transfer rules-- for now.

You may be right on the injunction, that would be another nail in the NCAA's coffin.

Kind of reminds me of what’s happening in the golf world. Good old boys that can’t see the future.

The early signing day for high school players this year is December 15th.

December 20th the Bowl Pairings come out and the Portal opens.

At that point coaches have to be 100 MPH in the portal to fill any holes in the roster, and the competition will be fierce. The backchannel NIL money will be in play.

This rule just seems like it's going to make a free for all.

If Ty or Butter was thinking of hitting the Portal after fall camp, they are stuck now. If Bo has a good year and goes Pro, then Ty and Butters are back in a Spring battle for QB1.

Do they both stay for the Spring 2023 or does one of them hit the Portal when it opens in December this year?

It seems like this new rule will help coaches retain players with the carrot of in the Spring it's your shot to win the job.

The good news to this is....the QBs have to stick around, so that means if Bo can't do the job or gets hurt...we have talent in relief.  This is big, IMHO.
