Oregon and North Carolina Could Make for a Record-Breaking Holiday Bowl

The highest-scoring Holiday Bowl ever happened in 1980 when BYU edged SMU 46-45 in one of the greatest college football games ever played.

Jim McMahon led three touchdown drives in 4 minutes to help the Cougars earn their first bowl win in program history.

The highest single-game output came a decade later when Texas A&M dropped 65 on the Cougars.

Amazingly, both of those records could fall this year. Oregon averages 40 points a game and North Carolina puts up 35.

They’re led by two of the nation’s most exciting and prolific quarterbacks: Oregon senior Bo Nix and UNC freshman Drake Maye.

Here's hoping Storm Duck and his teammates experience a real Duck Storm on the 28th of December.  And who knows, maybe Storm Duck might want to enter the dreaded transfer portal and become a real Duck after seeing the team and players up close and personal.

North Carolina roster severely depleted ahead of Holiday Bowl vs. Oregon

In the Tar Heels’ case, a large part of their defensive 2-deep won’t be available, including a lot of the secondary.

One would think a healthy Bo Nix and the Ducks’ receivers should have their way with the remaining players in UNC’s secondary.

Oregon has its share of players transferring out, but many are role players and those who didn’t see the field much.

Here is the complete list of Tar Heel transfers who won’t play in the Holiday Bowl.

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

Between star WR Caleb Downs and CB1 Tony Grimes, it’s safe to say North Carolina won’t be at full strength for the Holiday Bowl.

Why The Oregon Ducks Will Beat North Carolina In The Holiday Bowl

What will be the biggest key for the Ducks is the fact that Bo Nix is suiting up in this game. Many quarterbacks of his

stature would probably be on the way out at this point or refusing to play because of a risk of an injury.

The mismatch for this UNC defense is just too much to overlook.

Sorta takes some of the glamour out of playing the game with so many good players (and starters) opting out.  On the one hand, it can be "good" news for Oregon increasing their chances of winning but on the other hand raising the risk of a loss to NC looking even worse if O should stumble like they did to OSU.  I really don't know what to think except that many bowl games are losing a lot of their luster - if they had any before.

How Oregon Ducks’ depth chart shapes up heading into Holiday Bowl, 2023

Oregon (9-3) has lost 15 scholarship players to the transfer portal and DJ Johnson and Christian Gonzalez

have opted out of playing in the Holiday Bowl against North Carolina.

That leaves the Ducks with approximately 67 scholarship players on the roster, including three injured

interior defensive linemen and several true freshmen who have yet to play.

“When you have less people here, there’s more opportunities for the people that are here,” Lanning said.

“We’re excited about the guys we’ve got.”

Tar Heels, Ducks follow stars into Holiday Bowl

In an era in which the stars of the show routinely opt out of bowl games, No. 15 Oregon and North Carolina follow their leading men into the Holiday Bowl.

Ducks quarterback Bo Nix is returning for the 2023 season and Tar Heels phenom Drake Maye is also playing in the game.

“Honestly, North Carolina had kind of a similar end of the season, if you really look at it,” Oregon center Alex Forsyth said. “We both are gonna have a bad taste in our mouth, and look to get that bad taste out.”

Predicting Oregon's defensive two-deep ahead of Holiday Bowl matchup against UNC

Oregon is a handful of days away from taking on UNC and quarterback Drake Maye, who finished inside the top 10 in the 2022 Heisman voting.

Against Maye and company, Oregon's defense will look significantly different than its final game against the Beavers.

Oregon will have its work cut out for them on December 28th in San Diego, but I'll take my best crack at what the defensive two-deep will look like after 10 players have moved on.

Buckle up Duck fans. The Holiday Bowl is only 5 days away!

Predicting Oregon's offensive two-deep ahead of Holiday Bowl against UNC

While fans are well aware of who has starred on this year's team to this point, we felt it worthwhile to provide updated depth chart projections ahead of the bowl due to the large number of transfers and opt outs from the program.

The Ducks have seen over a dozen players enter the transfer portal since the conclusion of the regular season and three more players decide not to play in San Diego to focus on professional endeavors.

Here is an update of what the offensive two-deep figures to look like on Dec. 28.

Per the 247Sports Team Talent Composite, the Tar Heels have 16th most talented roster in the country.

However, the Tar Heels, like the Ducks, have lost a significant number of players to the transfer portal

this offseason, and will be playing without several key players.

Today we run through that talent and where it resides on this UNC team. So take a look at which Tar Heels

players you should know based upon their recruiting rankings.

5 Tar Heels Oregon needs to look out for in the Holiday Bowl

The runner-up from the ACC has had many players transfer or opt-out to prepare for the NFL draft. The Tar Heels’ secondary has been especially decimated. Starting corners Tony Grimes and Storm Duck have each transferred, as has safety Cam’Ron Kelly. Linebacker Raneiria Dillworth and backup quarterback Jacolby Criswell are also off the roster.

The most important Tar Heel, starting quarterback Drake Maye, will be under center to lead UNC into the postseason game in San Diego.

Maye is an obvious one, but here he is plus four other Tar Heels Oregon needs to pay close attention to if the Ducks want to end the season on a high note.

DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

Even with all of the transfers/opt outs, North Carolina will still bring a formidable team to play the Ducks in the Holiday Bowl.

Updated Holiday Bowl betting odds for No. 15 Oregon vs. North Carolina

With neither team a powerhouse on defense, this game could be high scoring, as the over/under odds predict.

The line has shifted in favor of the Ducks, moving from -12.5 points to -14.5 points since the line opened on December 7th. On the year, UNC is 5-7-1 against the spread, while Oregon is 8-4.

The over/under opened at 73.5 points and has steadily moved up and down over the last few weeks but has settled at 74 points as of December 26th.

ESPN's FPI projections give Oregon a 69.5-percent chance of beating North Carolina.

Holiday Bowl Prediction: Explosive Offenses to be on Display When Oregon Faces North Carolina in San Diego

Nix is adept at spreading the ball around, with 10 players posting double-digit receptions. Troy Franklin, Kris Hutson, and Chase Cota lead the way and will be ready to go on Wednesday night.

But the running game also is a factor as Mar'Keise "Bucky" Irving and Noah Whittington, along with Nix the runner, provide a formidable ground game. The offensive line, which is a solid run-blocking unit, led the nation with just four sacks allowed during the regular season. This spells trouble for a Carolina defense that was anemic for much of the year.

It would seem as though the Tar Heel offense would start with Drake Maye, but in a lot of ways the play of the guys in front of him is much more important. If given time, the ACC Player and Rookie of the Year will put up big numbers and give the Heels a chance to win every game. Maye was pressured far too often and his effectiveness waned. Oregon is not a team that applies great pressure, but that certainly does not mean Carolina will keep Maye clean.
