Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 2 Share Posted March 13, 2023 Oregon lands in NIT with 1st round home game The Oregon men's basketball season isn't over after they missed out on an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament for a second year in a row. Sunday evening the Ducks accepted an invitation to the NIT as a No. 1 seed. The Ducks will look to continue their season with a home game later this week when they host the first round against a familiar foe on Wednesday. With the No. 1 seed in the Oregon region of the NIT Bracket, the Oregon Ducks will host UC Irvine of the Big West conference in the first round of the tournament. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 and is set for 8 PM. The Anteaters of UC Irvine finished their regular season with a 23-11 overall record and finished 15-5 and tied for first in their league. The Ducks finished the regular season with a 19-14 overall record and fourth-place standing in the Pac-12. Irvine beat Oregon in the second game of the season 69-56 in Eugene. Irvine in the win earlier this year of Oregon was led by guard DJ Davis' 24 points, which included six made 3-pointers. Oregon played without starting guard Jermaine Couisnard and reserve guard Brennan Rigsby as they were dealing with injuries. N'Faly Dante led the Ducks with 20 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks in the loss. Jon Joseph Moderator No. 3 Share Posted March 13, 2023 Irvine is a tough 1st round draw for a team seeded on the one line. But the NIT is for good reason, $, more travel-conscious than the NCAA. BTW, after defeating UCLA for the conference title I think Arizona got screwed being a 2 seed and not playing in the west. Meanwhile, UCLA down its all-conference D player gets to play in Sacramento. The game against Gonzaga will be a witch but IMO Kansas is a weak #1 seed. Get by Gonzaga and UCLA returns to Las Vegas in the Sweet 16. Arizona? The Wildcats make the Sweet 16 and play in Louisville.
Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 4 Share Posted March 13, 2023 The storylines to know for Oregon heading into the NIT Oregon was awarded a No. 1 seed in the tournament and will get to play at home for the first three rounds of the tournament should they win games. The NIT selection committee certainly raised a few eyebrows when they released Oregon's first-round opponent UC Irvine out of the Big West. The regular-season co-champion Anteaters are a very respectable program out west at the low-major level, and this season they made waves in college basketball during the first week of the season by blowout out the Oregon Ducks on Oregon's own home floor. "We got beat in every facet of the game. Hustle, Toughness. We had a number of practices that resembled that," said Oregon head coach Dana Altman after the loss back in November. Here are some notes heading into Oregon's first-round matchup against UC Irvine of the Big West Conference. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 5 Share Posted March 15, 2023 Richardson and Couisnard out for UC Irvine due to injuries, Dante still dealing with ankle injury When it rains it pours and for the Oregon men's basketball team, and they've been stuck in the storm all season long. As Oregon looks to keep its season alive in postseason play they'll be doing it without potentially three starters in an opening-round NIT game on Wednesday night. Oregon senior and starting point guard Will Richardson's career is over due to injury while starting guard Jermaine Couisnard is also out due to injury. N'Faly Dante is going to be "hopeful" as head coach Dana Altman put it, but he too may miss Wednesday's game against UC Irvine due to injury. "Jermaine is out with his shoulder. He had a partial separation against UCLA, actually played with it for a while," said Altman. "Will is going to be out, he had a hip problem. We are hopeful Dante is going to be able to play, he's had a hard time getting his ankle right from the game [against Washington State]. Not sure who we are going to have. "But we are definitely going to be without our two starting guards." Graziani93 No. 11 Share Posted March 15, 2023 (edited) What's the worst thing that will happen in accepting the NIT bid? We lose to UCI again, but so what? We get to see if some of the guys who will be here next year can play in a tournament game against a good opponent. I'm actually looking forward to seeing how Kee and Ty run this team. Lok certainly deserves more minutes. Maybe Ware can go off. We are not like UNC - we are not "too good" to turn down a NIT bid this or any year. Let's run and have some fun! Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 12 Share Posted March 15, 2023 Can short-handed Oregon men’s basketball avenge loss to UC Irvine, advance in NIT? If Oregon is going to get revenge against UC Irvine for its Nov. 11 home loss to the Anteaters, the Ducks are going to need to shoot much better from three-point range, which has been a season-long issue, and manage to do that without guards Jermaine Couisnard and Will Richardson and possibly center N’Faly Dante. The latest round of injuries for the Ducks typifies a season that has been defined in large part by who wasn’t available at any given time. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 13 Share Posted March 16, 2023 LIVE UPDATES: Oregon opens NIT with home game vs UC Irvine The Oregon men's basketball program kicks off NIT play tonight with a first-round matchup against UC Irvine. The Anteaters won the first meeting this season 69-59 in Eugene. This time around the Ducks will be without multiple starters. "I challenged the guys, and adversity strikes, how are you going to respond," asked Dana Altman. "It's one of the great lessons for their life. How are you going to respond to adversity? "This is just another chance to try and swing away and try and overcome it." Altman announced ahead of the game that starting point guard Will Richardson and starting shooting guard Jermaine Couisnard are both out with injuries. Starting center N'Faly Dante could also miss the game as well, but Altman was more "hopeful" of his availability to play. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 35 Share Posted March 16, 2023 Three Ducks have career-nights in blowout win over UC Irvine With its three top players out for the game due to injuries the Oregon Ducks saw career performances from multiple reserves as the No. 1 seeded Oregon Ducks advanced to the second round of the NIT. Three different Ducks scored in double-figures for Oregon, Oregon's defense held UC Irvine below 30 percent shooting from the field, and the Ducks were able to dominate the rebounding battle to cruise to an impressive 84-58 victory. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 36 Share Posted March 16, 2023 MBB Recap: Ducks advance to 2nd round of NIT with 84-58 blowout over UC Irvine The odds were stacked against them going into the game, with the Oregon Ducks having to play the first game of the NIT without three starters: Will Richardson, N’Faly Dante, and Jermaine Couisnard. On top of that, they were playing UC Irvine, a team that gave them one of their worst losses of the season back in December. After missing out on the NCAA Tournament, with so many things working against you, it would have been easy for the Ducks to come out flat and not work hard to advance. Instead, they dispatched with the Anteaters easily at Matthew Knight Arena. It was an opportunity for some guys lower on the depth chart to get good run and show what they’re capable of. Guys like Rivaldo Soares and Tyrone Williams showed out, posting their first career double-doubles with the Ducks, and some late-game heroics from Nate Bittle brought down the house. In the end, it led to a blowout victory and moved the Ducks on to the second round of the NIT. Here’s how it all went down. Pennsylvania Duck Author Moderator No. 40 Share Posted March 16, 2023 Adversity, Anteaters No Match For Ducks Playing without three starters, Oregon blasted UC Irvine in the first round of the NIT on Wednesday, 84-58. Oregon won without three injured starters, avenged an early season defeat, earned the 20th win of the year and advanced in the NIT on Wednesday with an 84-58 win over UC Irvine at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks will host Central Florida in the second round Sunday after beating the Anteaters without starters Will Richardson, N'Faly Dante and Jermaine Couisnard. UC Irvine handed the UO men their first loss of the season, back on Nov. 11, but the Ducks bounced back from falling short in a late-season bid to make the NCAA Tournament by winning their NIT opener. "We're not where we want to be; it's been a roller coaster of a season with injuries, and just never getting guys, roles, the way we want them," UO coach Dana Altman said.
