  2. Have to give our DL credit for allowing us to have different personnel packages at DB. Take a great athlete, and use their intelligence, and abilities, to wreak havoc. I will go back a few years and say a player like Troy Dye would probably have excelled in the position. A thorough knowledge of the opposing offense, good sideline to sideline speed, great tackler, and was a cruise missile coming up to stop the run.
  3. A lot of you have probably seen that Oregon has implemented a new — to them — defensive position this year. I’ve heard it called a Rover, and I’m sure Oregon has their own name for it, but it is a third safety playing as a deep middle linebacker. It’s a Jim Knowles staple. Probably something Oregon picked up on last season, and something they may see in a couple of weeks.

  5. Two stats of interest. Northwestern surrendered 269 rush yards to Tulane and is 122nd in the country in rush yards surrendered. USC at Purdue - SC has not won a game in the Eastern time zone since 2012, and is 0 for the Eastern time zone since joining the B1G. Change flight attendants? 😁
  6. Thank you, Charles, for hosting the contest! OBD 56-10 NW TOs - 3 Sacks - 3 Pass - 250
  7. I think Ohio State and Michigan have the two largest living alumni base in the country. I see people representing those schools nationwide and even overseas. Alabama has a large rabid fan base, but they aren't as big outside of their region. That is true for most of the SEC. You are absolutely right that Notre Dame is different. They have a mystique due to the fact they were the first program to have weekly national television exposure. There are cultural reasons for their popularity as well, I get all that. But to me one of the reasons they are that unicorn is because they've never been in a group. They are really one of a kind in that regard. Notre Dame isn't known as a school in Indiana, they are Notre Dame. Texas, Ohio State and Michigan are huge, but they represent a region and a state. BYU is the closest to Notre Dame, but they didn't have the benefit of NBC. The B1G without Ohio State and Michigan wouldn't be the same. When you think of the B1G you think of those two first. But Ohio State became wha they are because of the B1G. The Rose Bowl, the games with Michigan to determine who got the right to go to the Rose Bowl. It's symbiotic. Ohio State and the B1G are on another level than FSU and the ACC. They shouldn't sink to the level FSU did, it's bush league imo.
  8. Great post, Charles, thank you. Oregon makes up for its (beautiful, no doubt) location by having an aligned and energetic recruiting operation—this and the money invested in recruiting. Oregon is doing this notwithstanding being a half-share Big Ten partner through 2030. As many others have asked over the years, what are Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue, and Nebraska (!), for example, doing with all of the Big Ten money? I ask, why does an 18-team Big Ten with the revenue the conference is bringing in and shared equally across the board, have but five Blue Chip Roster teams? (I give small private school with sterling academics, Northwestern, a pass. Especially, a portal pass.) Many B1G members with the same revenue share are not spending the money to compete in the conference and on the national stage. If the PO committee has a metric that gives appropriate weight to the strength of schedule, no more G5 teams ranked 9th in the nation please, conference performance top to bottom will matter. G6 Tulane put up 269 rush yards against Northwestern. Once every 30 to 40 seasons, the Willdcats will rise up and play terrific football. But that's it. I get the populist appeal of every member team receiving the same slice of revenue. But IMO this should be conditioned on every member investing an agreed-upon minimum for football and men's basketball. Otherwise, why should the top spending teams that produce positive results share with those unwilling to spend the money? Mississippi State just defeated ASU. Vandy blew out VA Tech on the road. (OK, I hear you. Florida did lose to USF 😁.) Could the bottom third of the B1G win these games? As Dan Lanning said, Oregon spends money to win! Oregon's partners should do the same or IMO, be treated like junior partners. Going the extra mile is paying off for OBD.

  10. I think there is only room for so many Notre Dames in the television landscape. ND is pretty unique in having already achieved extreme popularity while having always been independent. BYU is a recent example that tried this and failed despite having a very good brand and national following with a religious angle. tOSU is obliviously a huge brand that is currently extremely hot due to on-field success, but it’d be a huge risk for a network to try an exclusive deal that paid more than tOSU currently makes with the B1G. Where does it end? Why not Texas, Michigan, Alabama, Georgia, etc. So I maintain they have no leverage and should be told to sit and spin or to pound sand. There are like 5 universities currently a half-notch below them (half-notch below them as of this moment, subject to change) that’d take their place in a heartbeat.

  15. Thank you, Smitty. Terrific, informative post. 9 AM body time KO is not something a team experiences often in a season, thank goodness. Northwestern usually does not kick off at 11 AM Central. Long flight? Eugene to Denver flight time 2 H 23 M. To Chicago is 4 H 20 M. So, 2 H 20 M longer on an airplane, not on a train or a bus. Football is one sport where body clock time of day can matter, but negative consequences from travel are IMO, exaggerated. Right, Mick Cronin? 😁 Everyone on the flight has entertainment and educational materials in their hands. And also the opportunity to study game prep materials. For the guys who will make to the NFL, get used to it. I think many of the players and coaches, who practice early in the day, would prefer to KO early and not sit around until 7:30 or 8 PM. And with the time difference, the team will be back in Eugene at a reasonable hour. How about traveling East to West instead? Next week's game of Michigan State at USC kicks off at 11 PM Eastern time and will end around 3 AM Eastern. (3 hours alloted for broadcast time are a joke.) The Spartans won't be back home until Sunday afternoon. Thanks again and Waste the Wildcats!

  17. The Oregon Ducks have been among the hottest teams in the nation so far this year, and while they have not played elite competition thus far, they've looked practically flawless in the eight quarters of football that we've seen thus far. Because of that, a lot of national buzz has started to come over the last week, following a 69-3 blowout over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Now they go on the road for the first time this season and kick off Big Ten Conference play with a game against the Northwestern Wildcats. It's another game that features a four-score point spread, and one that will have a different feel to it, thanks to the 9 a.m. PT kickoff and the fact that it will be played on a converted lacrosse stadium that seats 12,000 fans. So far, we've broken down the matchup, looked at some major players to know for the opponent, and covered the injury news heading into Saturday. Now it's time to make some predictions. To preview the game, we go through our weekly roundtable with the writers from Ducks Wire to offer our opinions and predictions for what's to come. Here’s our first roundtable of the year. CBS analyst Crawford predicts doom for the Ducks in 'harsh reality' forecastNot so fast, my friend. The CBS Sports pundit is accurate generally but shoddy in the specifics.
