Super Bowl Looked Like Our Rose Bowl?
This is an excerpt from a column in The Athletic this morning: Credit the Eagles. They built a dominant pass rush and won the game exactly how other teams have beaten Mahomes over the years: by making him hold the ball until the pass rush converged. Mahomes' average time to throw (or to sack) correlated so strongly with the Chiefs' wins and losses. Through three quarters Sunday, Mahomes held the ball longer, on average, than he had in all but one career start (3.65 seconds). That shrunk to 3.30 by game's end, thanks to garbage-time production. Philly forced three turnovers — including a Cooper DeJean pick-six — and sacked Mahomes six times, one shy of tying a Super Bowl record of 7. The Eagles took a Chiefs team on the doorstep of NFL history and manhandled them up front, consistently getting to Mahomes behind just a four-man rush. Mahomes was pressured on 16 of his 42 total dropbacks, and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio didn’t call a single blitz in the game. It was D-line pressure. (Ohio State had 8 sacks of Gabriel. Gabriel’s average time from snap to throw was 2.6 seconds on Oct. 12, per Pro Football Focus. On Jan. 1, it was 3.4 seconds.) Future of Civil War Football
As I noted earlier, I would prefer opponents in the West who put the team in good recruiting territory: ASU, Utah, Cal, San Diego. The first 3 of that 4 also means a cross conference (Big12, ACC) boost on strength of schedule. Any periodic game with OSU should be conditioned that both programs do not pay the other a visitor fee if they are home-and-home. In the unlikely event of a 2 for 1, then I could see UO paying OSU something for one of the games - just as it planned to do with Boise State. An "annual" game reduces schedule opportunities for other potentially attractive opponents.

Oregon Chokes in the Second Half, Michigan State Wins 86-74
"....be tougher than the other team, that's what wins in the B1G" Aside from travel, new venues, fans who actually show up for games, coaching styles... the one thing I suggested before the season started still holds true. When you play in the B1G there is going to be a lot of banging and the B1G refs swallow their whistles. As I said, it may require Altman and staff to modify their recruiting priorities. But, it absolutely requires the roster to play tougher, more physical, than they did in the Pac12. No matter how this season turns out, players and staff need to really mentally encapsulate the lessons learned especially in B1G road games.

Is Stein Oregon's Best Option at OC?
"They just assumed that we would show up with the same game plan and beat OSU again, despite the widely reported changes that the Buckeyes made to their defensive scheme and offensive play calling. " It would be interesting to know the details of the actual game preparation. The results made it appear the Oregon staff watched the October game tape on an endless loop and assumed it would be the same. The staff are professionals, and I assume that was not the case. In the CFP it's win or go home. So, I assume the players were "motivated." But, it was just stunning how quickly it was 17-0, then 24-0. Someday I would like to hear more detail. At the pace it reached 24-0, it was more than just the loss of one player. We recognize Chip's contribution, but Knowles defense was in Gabriel's grill before he could do anything.

Future of Civil War Football
My polite no is based on evaluating alternatives. I would prefer an FCS game, and a cross-regional Power 4 game such as a Big12 foe, ACC foe, or SEC foe to complete 2 of the 3 slots. The B1G and SEC have already had discussions about an annual game for each conference member. For the third slot I would prefer a rotation of old Pac12 opponents in areas that provide some recruiting boost: Arizona, ASU, Utah, Cal, and perhaps, BYU or WSU in lieu of Oregon State. Aside from nostalgia, I'm not sure what Oregon "receives" by scheduling OSU every season? Not saying, never, but annually just seems too much to me based on what alternatives might bring. Even Fresno St, San Diego St, UNLV occasionally?

Is Stein Oregon's Best Option at OC?
for the stat interest, Rose Bowl, by quarter score - OS time - UO time possession 14-0 - 8:31 - 6:29 - OSU 45 yd pass, 42 yd pass 20-8 - 5:56 - 9:04 - OSU 46FG, 43 yd pass, 66 yd run, 36FG 7-7 - 5:32 - 9:28 - OSU 8 yd run 0-6 - 9:06 - 5:54 OSU: 181 rush, 319 pass UO: neg 23 rush, 299 pass It was 31-0 after 21:13 time of play, mid 2nd Q. OSU had drive possession for 6:53 in scoring 31 points. That's 31 points in 413 seconds, a point every 1-1/3rd seconds. They also had a 2:43 possession with a punt. So, I guess that is 31 points in 9:36 of possession. Ducks during that period of time: 11:37 possession, zero points.

Unlike OSU, Oregon shows a negative $8.2M in conference distributions on the revenue side. How can you have negative revenue? It is a negative because of allocations of the Pac12 for the Comcast fiasco and money withheld from the Ten Escapees related to realignment. Since it was withheld, it becomes negative rather than zero on the statement. How can OSU be $10M positive conference distribution in their report, while Oregon is a negative $8.2M conference distribution. Uh, once OSU/WSU were given the purse strings by Libey, then things happen. Aside from making the OSU revenue look better than it should, my view of things is if there is revenue to give OSU a chunk, then they should immediately say "no thanks" to the most recent Legislature honey pot. So, think about that. $8.25 institutional support padding the OSU revenue picture, while $8.2 negative conference distribution for UO. That's about a $16.5M swing in revenue when added together. If you look at both schools' reports, that isn't the only anomaly you'll see. NCAA financial reports show giant budget hit to Pac-12 legacy schools ARCHIVE.PH archived 5 Feb 2025 05:04:18 UTC

Beavers’ Athletics in the Black
re: that $8.25M institutional support to OSU athletics... from UO: The UO Athletics Department is self-sufficient, meaning it does not receive funding from tuition or any general state operating funds provided to the university. The department covers all of its direct operating costs with revenue generated from ticket sales, Pacific-12 Conference distributions, gifts, and other revenue streams. The vast majority of collegiate athletic programs across the country are subsidized by their respective institutions. The UO Athletics Department is one of only a handful of programs that is self-sufficient, receiving no funding from tuition or any general state operating funds. Revenues and expenditures for athletics equal each other and do not generate a surplus. The university charges the UO Athletics Department, as well as other auxiliary operations (e.g. housing, the Health Center), an administrative overhead charge to account for the fact that they use university resources and services such as the financial system, general counsel’s office, human resources, etc. The UO Athletics Department also pays the university the full amount of any and all scholarships it awards to student-athletes in support of the institution’s academic operations.

I believe the $10 million is after the fiscal year of this report? Not sure. But, the posted report does include $8.25 million "institutional support." I believe that is how money has been funneled to OSU athletics in the past. The Legislature allocates money to the university, which then does a bookkeeping transaction to athletics. Without the $8.25M, then there would be no surplus which the column says was $7.43M. In the report revenues, there is a line item for both media rights and conference distribution separately. Would be interesting to know whether some of that is "bag money" from Judge Libey's decision.

Oregon Ducks RB Coach Ra'Shaad Samples to Turn Down Dallas Cowboys Job
It will be interesting if there is a publicly reported salary for Chip in Las Vegas. He was $2 million base at Ohio St, and garnered $850K in bonus money for this season on top of that. He, or Raiders, have to pay tOSU $350K to secure his departure. Though, he likely has a sack from his termination money with the Eagles and 49ers which gives him freedom to make his own choices. His UCLA salary wasn't low ball, but living in L.A. wasn't cheap. He was 61 in November. Breaking: I just read a NFL sports writer's Twitter that says, "lured with a deal averaging $6 million per year" making him the NFL's highest paid coordinator.

The 3 seasons Carroll and Kelly overlapped at USC and Oregon: 2007 - Oregon 24-17 at Autzen 2008 - USC 44-10 in L.A. 2009 - Oregon 47-20 at Autzen - Pete's last season before Seahawks. At that point in time, the 47 was the most ever scored by Oregon vs USC. Later Chip teams had 53 and 62 on USC. Then, after Chip, 48 and 56.

LaMichael James is Oregon's All Time Best Running Back, Who's Next?
Some great names on that memory lane. It would be interesting to see a couple stats on each one. 1) what percent of total offense was their individual rushing yards 2) what percent of total rushing was their individual rushing yards To the degree a RB was carrying the team...vs other running backs or vs passing yards...I think they should get some credit. Having a bunch of yds when the whole offense was explosive may not be as impressive as a guy who was the grinder, the go to? A guy who was a star on a 10-2 team who we all remember because it was 10-2, may not be as much the "best" as a guy on a 8-4 team that had to be the man every game? For example, in 2024, Jeanty had 77.3% of all rushing yds. And, 42% of BSU's total offense (including a few receiving yds he had).

Second Poll Claims Natty for Ducks
In the "olden days" prior to 1968, the AP Final Poll Rankings were before the bowls. For example, in 1964 Alabama was 10-0, ranked No. 1, then lost to No. 5 Texas in the Orange Bowl, and finished 10-1. At the same time, No. 2 Arkansas was 10-0, had beaten Texas in Austin in the regular season, then went 11-0 beating No. 6 Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl. The AP Final Rankings: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Arkansas. If the 1968 and later approach had been in effect Arkansas would have a national championship, and Alabama could boast one less. Arkansas does not have an AP No. 1 in their program history. Between the first AP ranking in 1936 and 1967 there were 6 situations like Alabama as I recall. Another one: In 1960, Minnesota was No. 1 and lost to No. 6 Washington in the Rose Bowl. Undefeated (and 1 tie) Ole Miss won the Sugar Bowl. Minnesota has the 1960 No. 1 ranking.
