I wonder how many NFL 3rd string QB's with remaining eligibility are looking at this and wondering if they should go back to playing on Saturdays?
-
Thanks, DZNC, for another thoughtful conjecture. I agree with your conclusion but may have arrived at it from a less thoughtful approach.
My assessment of DL tends to be one based on wearing green-tinted glasses in one big sense.....I think we beat OSU and UW if Bo isn't hurt, and that isn't DL's fault. True, we should have had more competent back-up options, and the defense should have been better given the talent, but it wasn't his roster entirely either. Plus, we played Georgia.
Now, that doesn't qualify as a matrix, because it is not a consistent set of criteria....those caveats won't apply next year: it's Dan's roster now. So, I need a different set of evaluative criteria for next year. I will be looking at W-L record naturally, but also, game decisions, special teams performance and talent development.
But I am willing to give DL the Kirby Smart 6-year window based just on what I saw this season. Namely because I am glad he is here and not the last guy plus, I don't see a lot of better realistic options out there and I think the progrum needs some coaching stability again.

It's not about the X's and O's.....it's about the Jimmy's and Joe's

As excited as I am for this upcoming season. Year 3 of Coach Dan should be the first full realization of his progrum vision.
Thanks, Charles, DZNC, Darren, Joshua, Alex and Drex for another great season of articles and ponder points. Apologies for any contributors I have accidentally omitted....
Oh, and the mods and editors, too!

And I thought that Sewell and Flowe would be the linebacking unit I had been waiting for since the 80's.
The older I get the less I know.

Unless I'm missing something, there's not many of those. We were a young team. I see WR Isiah Crocker (junior) only played 4 games, WR Kade Wisher (junior walk-on) DNP, kicker Alex Bales (junior walk-on) played in 4 games, OL Steven Jones (junior) started 2 games, played 3, Nose tackle Popo Aumavae (super senior) is seeking an NCAA waiver and wants to come back to Eugene, DL Taki Taimani (junior) didn't start but played in 9 games, plus he already entered the portal to come here last year from UW, ILB Micah Roth (senior walk-on) played 5 games.....
And... that's it. Everyone else at the bowl game was a starter or played a lot, or were sophomores or younger. 40 players on that chart were walk-ons, for the record.
I forgot about the COVID year, so some of the R.FR and Sophs are also on year 3 without seeing the field.

Kind of surprised we haven't heard any news on new transfers out of the program, we're already look at least 8 or so by more count that need to move to get to 85, and this doesn't even include any more transfers or freshmen.
I'm very interested to see who is going to move on from Oregon.
Check ChileDucks depth chart for guys who are juniors and seniors and haven't seen the field

The market sets the price for value.....the marginal revolution comes to NCAA athletics.
Hayek and von Mises are smiling in their tombs.
-
This is why he hired Marschall Malchow (sp?) and some of us thought it might be the biggest hire of the entire staff.
Roster engineering is one of the key pillars in the new era of strategic progrum administration, alongside empirical talent evaluation, branding NIL management and opposition research.
The balanced scorecard of NIL-era football programs would be a fascinating case study.

The NCAA is lining the sacred cows up outside the slaughterhouse.
That stadium has to be in line for a major renovation if it is going to be an ongoing CFP venue. Otherwise SOFI should be used.

I think we are going to have a defensive scheme next year comprised of 11 linemen

It just makes me giddy to see someone else talk about the blue-chip ratio haha, but you're so right. Luckily, we've recruited really, really well for Pac-12 standards recently. Now we just need to keep pushing to get those top-5-type classes.
Thanks for the good read Joshua....if anyone can keep pushing for the Top 5, it's Dan Lanning and crew. I know Mariø had recruiting success in Eugene as well, but DL ( I want to start calling him The Danimal like the old Bear DL from the 80's Dan Hampton) has better evaluation, development and scheme skills to leverage the talent once its here.

I THINK this puts us at 92 scholarships?

I don't know what our blue-chip ratio (BCR) will look like in 2023 (in 2022, it was 60% according to 247 composite) or how to factor NIL/Transfer complexities into BCR, but if we can get it closer to 80%, with Bo Nix staying healthy and this young coaching staff's maturation based on the 2022 season, I like our chances to get to the CFP.
My annual goals are as always the same:
1. Beat OSU
2. Beat UW
3. Win the Conference
4. Win your bowl game
If Bo were healthy this year, I think this was feasible. I think this is achievable in 2023 with 95% certainty--again, if Bo is healthy. Anything beyond that list is "gravy" to me. Rose Bowl win would be better than the CFP 1st round loss in my mind.
If we push that BCR up to 80%, with Dan's Dudes, then I think we are legit contenders. I wish Sonny Dykes was our OC.

I would like another shot at Penn State in the Rose Bowl someday.

West Linn knocks off national No. 1 Duncanville with ‘gutsy performance’ to win Les Schwab Invitational

West Linn (10-0) became the first Oregon entrant to win the 16-team event since Lake Oswego in 2012.-

I heard Joey on a Portland radio show say that he needed route running and blocking technique work. Just speculation but I think Thornton may have been concerned about being passed on the depth chart next year by Lowe.

Oh man, what a nasty week to be without power and heat. Hope it comes back soon. Hang in there.
Could be worse...I have the Holiday Bowl recorded on DVR. In the old days if the power went down the Betamax went with it and the game would be gone forever!
-
I am on Day 5 of a power outage. No heat or hot water. Wifey is getting snarly. My relief is to go out to the truck, fire it up to blast the heat and charge the phone, then as soon as it will turn on I log in to FishDuck. Still haven't seen the bowl game.
But I am current on all things OBD!
Thanks, Charles....you are the wind beneath my wings.

As Joey Harrington pointed out on Talkin' Ducks, 10 wins is not the same as it used to be with teams now playing 13 games in the regular season. Some of the teams in the playoffs will have a chance to play up to 15 games this season!
With the talent on Oregon's roster, anything less than a spot in the conference championship game should be considered disappointment. The Ducks were close but didn't get it done. They should be proud of the bowl victory and hopefully have motivation going into the off season.
I would agree but there are 2 mitigating factors: Bo's injury and the roster from a prior coach
-
Boy, the Bolts need help at offensive line.....no running lanes inside the tackles and on passing downs, Herbert was getting pressured relentlessly from the left side in particular.

Justin Herbert Needs a New Team
in Our Beloved Ducks

Staley going full Cristobal in second half....running to eat clock, punting, missed field goal. Joey Bosa has a ten cent head. Melting down after 4 Jag TO's in first half. Textbook malfeasance.
Forgive me, I'm not processing this loss rationally. And I am typing this before the last play....so even if the field goal is a shank, I stand by my opinion.
