It Has Been Decided Which Side of the Ball DJ Johnson Will Play...
I don't understand, because when I use an incognito window--I can see it. Oh well...we need a replacement for Thibs, and DJ needs to make the most of this year--so this works for all parties. --------------------------------------------------- Against Ohio State on September 11, 2021, Johnson had one of the most remarkable few minutes you can imagine for a college football player. Johnson wearing No. 12, on offense, caught a crucial third-down pass, as a tight end, with 2:41 remaining in the game to give Oregon a chance to ice the game. As a defensive lineman, Johnson ended the game with a sack of CJ Stroud a few minutes later. Johnson finished the year playing both sides of the ball, finishing with 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one sack. Those events lead us to this year and the revolving door: where is DJ Johnson playing this season? New defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi has the answer. "I know DJ (Johnson) was doing kind of a lot of things and sharing both duties and playing tight end and after evaluating the film, as to the day we decided to take this job, that was certainly going to change, in my opinion," said Lupoi on Thursday. "As long as the head coach signed off of that, I wanted DJ to play defense. So I think he's got the right mindset mentality. Obviously, having to share duties and play both ways and stuff, there's going to be some stuff that we got to improve with him. And I've been really impressed by how he's attacked the process, especially the mental aspect of the defense and the concentration to go get better. You know, this guy is on a mission to improve every day, that's obvious to me." So far, in spring practice, Johnson, faithful to Lupoi's words, has been lining up with the defensive ends/outside linebackers. He has slimmed down noticeably and looks to be ready to make his impression known. "As far as what I'm asked to do (with the new defense) it's to play how I play," said Johnson on Thursday. Johnson has certainly made his presence known to other members of the outside linebacker group, including projected starter Bradyn Swinson. "DJ Johnson," said Swinson about who is standing out so far. "He was at tight end the last few years, know he's transitioning back. It's like he hasn't missed a step. DJ came back fast, motor is fast, fast-twitch, fast get off, everything is fast. He's out there working. He's out there trying to outwork anybody running to the ball, and I'm just excited. I'm excited to see that." Johnson will be wearing No. 2 this season, lining up on defense but admits that "everything is a possibility" on where he could play for the 2022 season.

By contrast....Tyner was supposed be a sub-10.00 guy and we did not see that kind of football speed. Good speed, yes, but not like DAT or Devon Allen.

What Coach Wasikowski Said
It is what he said to his assistant coaches that would interesting to hear....as he pointed to the Bruins and said, "THAT is where I want our pitching to be in the future." He is coaching hitting superbly, and once he gets pitchers here like that--look out! For now, I think the pitchers we have are coached up wonderfully, and are competing so close...but in the end the UCLA pitchers did not blink and Oregon's did. We are on the right path at Oregon...better days and lots of wins ahead of us!

Too Much Negative: The End is NOT Near for Oregon Football
Hello Jon, It is good to clarify things and your post contains many areas for us to do so. Please keep in mind...I do not make the rules; all of YOU do. I simply want a civilized and pleasant place to read and discuss the Ducks, and when someone does something that could hurt that--I make a new rule. Every rule is there because people did these things, and I wish I did not need to have any of them. 1. The above comes under the category of new "Breaking News" about transfers. Anything pertaining to these subjects that is new....we discuss as I wrote in the article and in a post above. For example, Denis transferring out is news, and there will be more transfers after Spring Football, and we do discuss it in those new threads. However, if anyone uses that thread to launch into a review of what has already been written 100 times already...it will be deleted. 2. That topic has been covered...the moves, the blunders and incompetence by the Commissioners and University Presidents extensively already. We do not need to rehash it over-and-over again. However, when new Breaking News about that topic surfaces, (and it will often) I then encourage discussion of this new element. A complete rehash in a post of what has already been extensively covered will be deleted...as I don't want to read it again. 3. Jon, I covered that in the article and in above posts: We do "Critical Analysis" here, and negative discussion of player performance and coaching decisions is encouraged and welcome. This is not a ban on negative; it is a ban on stuff we have read at least 100 times that is extreme negative concerning the referenced topics. 4. Jon, please see No. 1 above. When new Breaking News comes out about anything pertaining to the three components you mentioned directly above--we do discuss it with vigor. However we do not rehash old stuff in current threads, or rehash information everyone has read 100 times in the new threads. There is a pattern to my rule... 5. Jon, Mario was not mentioned at all in article, as he does not fit all the topics listed. How we address him is in No. 26 of the Rules, as prior coaches and players are fair game. Besides...I have a really good GIF to share when it aligns with the right Mario topic, and we can't lose that! 6. Agreed. And that is why when new Breaking News about these topics emerge--we will most certainly discuss them and it is quite permissible. Also--see No. 1 and No. 4 above please. 7. I believe you are trying to divert from the crux of the issue; I do not want to see stuff we have read 100, if not 1,000 times already. I have stated often and it is in the rules how I want to see all opinions, especially those that are different from mine as I become a better, informed fan and sometimes even change my mind. This new rule is not designed to quash discussion on other topics or news. 8. See No. 7 above and in particular No. 3 above, as we are not "Sunshine Pumpers" here. You and I were on the negative side of Cristobal's offense from the beginning, and that freedom still exists to disagree with anything going on. There is no other site that provides this freedom and protection from the owner. I call it the way I see and believe it to be, regardless of the topic and provide that freedom to everyone. However, I no longer provide the freedom to repeat items of extreme negative that have already been posted 100-1,000 times already because that hurts the wonderful atmosphere we have here. 9. I run into that often when someone disagrees with my rules. Since I am the one devoting hundreds of hours to doing tons of tasks like this, and giving thousands of dollars to have this platform available to Duck fans for free--I will create rules that I believe are for the best of the community. See No. 35 in the rules as it pertains to "Free-Speech." Private business can censor, and if you do not believe me, ask YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. I appreciate you asking these questions, as this is now a link I can provide to others to save me a ton of keyboarding in the future. Charles

Too Much Negative: The End is NOT Near for Oregon Football
It was suggested to me by one of my Duck-Buddies, that people are so frustrated with life at the moment--that any available avenue to blow off steam and vent is used to offset that frustration. This forum is an easy one to vent on, and we have perfect topics to vent about. (NIL/Portal/Pac-12 Incompetence, etc.) My response? The good people in this community are not your therapists couch; go blow off steam somewhere else because I cannot take any more of it. Our moderators are not looking for negative, as negative toward all other topics is fine, but we are looking for the extreme negative in the aforementioned topics and we ask...."is this just another re-hash we've read so many times?" If it is...I don't want to read it again, and the post will be deleted. And shawnski and latracey--thanks for your kind thoughts.

Baseball: Oregon Loses Another Tough One, 4-3
LOS ANGELES — Anthony Hall hit a two-run homer in the second and Oregon rallied for another run in the ninth, but that late surge came up just short in a 4-3 loss to UCLA on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Oregon (18-9, 7-4 Pac-12) rallied with two out in the ninth to make it a one-run game. Josh Kasevich, Hall and Sam Novitske all singled, with Novitske driving in Kasevich for his third RBI of the weekend. The rally ended with the potential game-tying run in scoring position. “That was a tough one, but nevertheless it’s baseball,” UO coach Mark Wasikowski said. “It’s against a very, very good pitching staff and a very good program. Tomorrow’s a must-win game; tomorrow’s a game that, we need to come out with a real fire and salvage a game here on this trip.” The Ducks and Bruins played a one-run game for the second day in a row and the fourth straight game in the series, going back to last season. In the five games the two teams have played since 2021, and entering Sunday’s finale of this weekend’s series, each team has scored 19 total runs. How It Happened: For the second game in a row, a two-run homer gave Oregon the early lead. A day after Novitske got the Ducks on the board first, Hall did the honors Saturday with a soaring shot down the right-field line to drive in Kasevich. UO starter Isaac Ayon (2-1) put another zero on the board in the bottom of the second, allowing the first two batters to reach before retiring the side. The Bruins broke through in the third, with a two-out, two-strike base hit to get within 2-1. UCLA opened the fifth with a double, a single and another double to tie it, 2-2, and put runners on second and third with nobody out. Ayon retired the next two hitters, but each out brought home another run as the Bruins took a 4-2 lead. The Ducks continued to battle — consecutive outs by Kasevich, Hall and Novitske in the seventh were all line drives right at Bruins, and in the eighth Tanner Smith drove a flyball to the wall in dead center, after Tyler Ganus had reached on an infield single. “We did sting some balls, and our bullpen pitched exceptionally well again — put zeros on the board throughout,” Wasikowski said. “… We squared five balls up off a reliever, and it didn’t end up happening for us.” At the Plate: Kasevich had two hits, giving him a streak of five straight games with a base hit. … Hall’s home run was his fourth of the season. … Novitske has driven in at least one run in three of the last four games. … Brennan Milone’s two-out double in the sixth got him back on track after his nine-game hitting streak ended Friday. On The Mound: Oregon’s bullpen pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, with Christian Ciuffetelli getting the Ducks out of the fifth-inning jam and pitching into the sixth. Stone Churby followed by striking out two in a scoreless inning, Rio Britton ended the seventh with a strikeout and Logan Mercado pitched a scoreless eighth despite putting runners on second and third with one out. On Deck: The Ducks and Bruins meet in the series finale Sunday at noon.

Canzano: Oregon Ducks' Quarterback Battle Has Transfer Portal Written All Over It
Dan Lanning is no dummy. The Oregon Ducks’ football coach allowed media into the program’s inner sanctum on Thursday for a few minutes. It was the first time in the Lanning era that an outsider laid eyes on a live 11-on-11 spring football drill. Just the fourth practice. Only the second day in pads. Still, Lanning opened the doors for 15 plays and let media observe. The reporters noted that quarterback Ty Thompson got the first-team reps, followed transfer Bo Nix, then returner Jay Butterfield. The fan base buzzed about it. Speculation swirled about next season possibly being Thompson’s time, or at least that he’d press Nix for the starting job. Or maybe this was just Thompson taking the first reps because he’s been in Eugene a lot longer than Nix. It was a brilliant tactical move, either way. Matt Prehm @MattPrehm Should note: Ty's series with the ones ended with a low pass getting tipped at the LOS by Jackson Powers-Johnson and Bryan Addison nabbing a sweet interception and returning it for what would have been a touchdown. Nix led the offense down the field into scoring range. Matt Prehm @MattPrehm Oregon ran 11-on-11 with media in practice for about 15 plays. QB order: 1. Ty Thompson 2. Bo Nix 3. Jay Butterfield March 31st 2022 5 Retweets69 Likes Nobody on the outside knows if Thompson — a five-star recruit out of high school — really is pressing Nix for the starting job. But that brief look through the keyhole sure gave the appearance of a tight race. It was exactly what Lanning needed to do in an era where gifted young players routinely jump in the transfer portal. In the last couple of years I took note on my statewide radio show that coaches I interviewed started to craft their answers a little differently. Most notably, when I’d ask how a particular player looked in practice I got some new-era thinking. It used to be that coaches would lean into the question and talk specifically about the one player. That’s gone. Unless I drill down with follow-up questions on the specific player what I typically encounter in 2022 is a coach who is cognizant of the feelings of every player in that position group and anyone in their friend and family circle who might be listening. They now tip toe around the question. Oregon QB Ty Thompson was a five-star recruit out of high school. “I love our entire quarterback room,” coaches now often say. Or the coach will reel off a checklist of everyone at the position, making sure that nobody on the roster is left out. The transfer portal did that, folks. ---------------------------------------------------- On Friday, I spoke with UO women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves about his roster. He lost a carload of players to the transfer portal when the season ended, including three talented sophomores. Questions swirled about whether there might be something larger going on with the program but Graves assured me it was the way of the new world. Graves said: “I looked today, there are more than 900 Division I women’s basketball players in the portal — 900. The season hasn’t even finished yet. It’s tough. It’s like NBA free agency every year.” He’s right. College football and men’s basketball both had the same flurry of transfer activity. Further, I told Graves that I felt like coaches weren’t being as candid and authentic about the depth chart anymore. At least not in public-facing appearances. Not just one coach — almost all of them. There is now almost no upside and a lot of potential downside to publicly talking about what’s happening with the roster. “We’re not honest. We’re not honest with you. We’re often times not honest with our own players because we’re trying to keep them warm,” Graves said. “Gone are the days quite frankly when you could come in and hope to play a little bit as a freshman, play more as a sophomore, kind of move into the rotation and maybe start as a junior. Those days are over." “Kids are looking for what they can get right now.” I love the concept of the transfer portal. It has a place in college athletics. But I think it’s enabling the teaching of some piss-poor life lessons. The portal has become an extension of the club-sports scene, where parents move their child out of one club and jump to another because their kid didn’t get playing time or got some constructive criticism. Gone is resilience. Absent is accountability. What we have in its wake is a new-era of athletics marked by transient behaviors. Three high schools in four years? Sure. Four different club coaches in four seasons? Yup. It’s happening. Now, we’re watching college players jump in and out of the portal, seeking more playing time, a better opportunity, and sometimes the added incentive of an endorsement deal. The portal needs to stay part of college athletics, but so does common sense. I wonder if the solution is to limit the transfer portal window to a two-month period after the end of every season. College courses have an “add/drop” deadline. So should college athletics. Because what we have now is a flimsy free-for-all that makes some college programs feel like bus stops. I don’t blame Lanning one bit for letting the media into practice. I admire that he had Thompson take the first reps. He’s learned from Mario Cristobal’s sins in this way. Thompson worked hard, stuck with the program through a head coaching change and we’re told has a load of talent. He got rewarded and encouraged by Lanning. Thompson went first. It may keep him around if he ends up second.
