Three Thoughts on the 12-Team Playoff
SPOT ON! Everyone starts Week Zero. 12th game is Flex-Scheduled with the top two teams in every conference playing for a conference title; No. 2 at No. 1. The Army/Navy game also played the same weekend. If the G5 and Notre Dame don't like it, tough. Everything moves up two weeks. No 1st round byes. 16 teams seeded as ranked. Quarter-final games on campus. Semifinals on New Year's Eve. Maybe we'll see something like this in 2026? The media will have to buy into the 12th game on campus being the champ game.

What? Oregon Fans are NOT the Worst?
IMO, it is more than OK for OBD fans to be salty about playing in the Rose Bowl and coming up with only the Thorns. It is also OK to be a bit peeved about playing the National Champion in the first round that the Committee ranked No. 6 but was the No. 8 seed. What will not be acceptable is a young group of coaches not learning from the B1G beatdown and come 2026, PO seeding matching the PO Committee rankings.

USC is Still a Blueblood! Maybe Not.
Incoming SC QB Husan Longstreet flipped from A+M to SC, is a Rivals 4* recruit, 5* in several rankings and he looked darn good in the Poly Bowl. His 75-yard toss to Dak Moore was the game-winner. Nico got a lot of mileage for the bowl win over Iowa in his true frosh season, but he was average in the SEC this season. You couldn't tell vs. Ohio State but it was the Vols D that carried the team in 2024.

The Domers with a nice comeback attempt But one touted defense showed up and the other, not so much. Total Yards - OHIO STATE 445/ NOTRE DAME 308 It didn't help that his kicker whiffed on the short FG attempt but not going for it 3rd and nine. I think some of Marcus' coaching fairy dust rubbed off in Atlanta.

Stewart Mandel's Preseason 2025 Ranking: Penn State is No. 1?
247 Sports Too Early T25 - 1. Texas/ 2. Ohio State/ 3. Georgia/ 4. OBD 7. Penn State/ 19. Indiana/ 20. Illinois/ 21. Michigan/ 23. Nebraska. Athlon - 1. Ohio State/ 2. Texas/ 3. Georgia/ 4. Penn State/ 5. Notre Dame/ 6. OBD 18. Indiana/ 21. Illinois/ 22. Michigan Citrus Bowl - Illinois 21 - South Carolina 17 - 18 staters return for Illinois, 12 of 14 B1G honorees return. 247 has the Gamecocks No. 12, eight spots above Illinois. Athlon has South Carolina No. 12., nine spots above the Illini. Two titles in a row for the B1G but the SEC still receives the ranking benefit of the doubt.

Stewart Mandel's Preseason 2025 Ranking: Penn State is No. 1?
1. PENN STATE - Warren is gone. No WR caught a pass vs. Notre Dame and the two WRs coming in from the portal are OK, not special. 3-0 to start: Nevada, Florida International, and Villanova OOC. Week 5 - Oregon is a 3.5 favorite playing in Happy Valley. Week 10. PSU plays Ohio State in Columbus and faces Indiana at home in Week 11. Also plays at Iowa and at a Michigan State team that always gives PSU trouble. Isn't James Franklin still at the PSU helm? TEXAS - Is there anyone left in Austin for Arch Manning to play ball with? Texas gets a repeat of an easy but for a trip to Athens, SEC schedule but the opener at Ohio State will be taxing. NOTRE DAME - Much more difficult schedule in 2025 and who replaces Riley Leonard at QB? LSU - Opens at Clemson in Clemson, SC, and not at a neutral site. Games at Ole Miss, Bama, and Oklahoma and vs. A+M and South Carolina. And Brian 'I'll never get to a title game at Notre Dame' Kelly is still in charge. Clemson is too high. UGA and tOSU are too low. And two B12 teams in the top 10? OBD. If Dante is ready to start, looking at the schedule I see a ceiling of 12-0 and a floor of 10-2. Beat the Bobcats!

Three Thoughts on the 12-Team Playoff
With the Pac-Whatever that was the last 'conference' to approve the change from 6-6 to 5-7, and having a veto power along with the other G5 conferences, we will not see significant if any, change next season as would be approved by the Power 4. The B12's beef over a G5 team being seeded ahead of ASU was legitimized in the PO 2nd round. No unanimous vote is required in 2026-27 with the B1G and the SEC holding more voting power than the other conferences. Seeding will be 'As Ranked.' If this was the case this season, OBD would have played the winner of No. 9 Boise State at No. 8 Indiana. 🤔An OBD or Indiana Rose Bowl win would have meant another $6M for the B1G and another $3M in travel expenses for the victor. Chip Kelly told John Canzano that he planned for a 16-game season and called plays accordingly. I guess at the start of the season Chip knew tOSU was in whether it won the conference title or even played in the Conference Champ game. Now, about the 3rd quarter malaise and being the B1G Champion. 😜

More on UO/tOSU, Blue Chip Ratios, and the Future
Thank you, OD. Great research. Bud Elliott, now with 247 Sports, introduced the Blue Chip Ratio in 2013. The formula worked for every college championship game played before 2013, worked in 2013, and for every season since 2013 including 2024-25. OBD had it won a BCS title or won a 4-team playoff title would have upset the Blue Chip Ratio cart. College Football has always been about the Jimmies and the Joes and always will be. Nick Saban won titles on Signing Day. He capitalized on the talent he brought in but Bama rarely had a roster ranked lower than its opponent's roster. In today's world of NIL and free agency, I believe that composite rankings including transfers ranked at the time of transfer, not coming out of high school matter. At the time they transferred Will Howard, Riley Leonard, Gabe, and Derrick Harmon were not 3* recruits. And in 2024-25, they weren't paid like 3* recruits. I believe it was Coach Saban last night who noted that transfers and returnees who could have gone pro are paid more than mid-level draft choices entering into their second contract. It seems, at least to this old-timer, that the script has flipped overnight from 'student-athletes' having no control to Athletes driving today's CFB bus. No wonder Nick decided to get off the bus. Rivals ranks transfer classes in addition to recruiting classes but I believe Rivals has not released a combined ranking as has 247 Sports and other services. There will be variances in the rankings but experienced college players should be easier to evaluate than players coming out of high school. When it comes to NIL, Division Street does not take a back seat to any collective. The seniors who returned to play for Ohio State were going to play one more year of college ball in Columbus and nowhere else. Nine transfers visited Oregon in the first portal go-round and Oregon signed all nine including the No.1 ranked OT and the No. 1 ranked Safety. I'm certain the Isiah World and Dillon Thieneman had more than one offer. Dan is working hard to bring top talent to Eugene. The kind of talent Ohio State has brought in year after year. The kind of talent that returned to Ann Arbor with Champion Michigan having the most players drafted in 2024, and returned to Columbus and Champion Ohio State which will lead the league in draft picks in 2025. The B1G finished the Playoff 6-3, with $2.55M for every team. Also, every team that traveled to a game received $3M expense money for every trip. That's $9M in expenses loot for THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. I trust that the Buckeyes did not fly Coach. 😁 Beat the Bobcats!
