The Five Portal Transfer Strategies: Oregon is Mislabeled...
Charles, I agree with your analysis. Oregon successfully cherry-picks from the Portal to fill positions of need. As Ohio State, Georgia, and other top recruiting programs did in 2023-24. Oregon is not portal-reliant to the extent of an Ole Miss. As I recall, Oregon wiped the floor with portal-oriented CU last season. But the Ducks do appear early in the article. Not so long ago, Oregon may not have been mentioned. It's a balancing act and recruiting of new and already recruited players never stops amidst unregulated tampering.

15 Teams We Want the Oregon Ducks to Play for the First Time
Thanks for the post. Assuming home and home series, right? G5 schools should not be on the list. There is no reason whatsoever to give G5 programs a return game. I suppose if Tulane, Memphis, or UTSA, wanted to trip to Autzen this would be fine. No way with B1G travel should Oregon be tripping to New Orleans, Memphis, or San Antonio to play a game of insignificant national interest. The only G5 school worth tripping to IMO is Hawaii for Pacific Islands recruiting purposes. Travel to play Arkansas, South Carolina, UCF, Duke, Syracuse, and Louisville? Why not play Cal or Stanford instead? Get a Hog pelt on the wall, who cares? Baylor is on the schedule in 2027 and 2028. After Oklahoma State in 2025 and 2026. IMO, that's enough of the B12. Clemson, Alabama, Ole Miss? Play teams of this caliber in the Playoffs. Especially, without knowing how the Playoff Committee is going to consider the strength of the schedule. Thanks again.

Oh My! Oregon WBB: It Couldn’t Get Any Worse?
Another terrific article, Don, thank you. In 2023, Oregon Athletics produced a Total Revenue of $121,317,887. Total Expenses were $121,162,341 for a net of $155,546. Oregon has one of the few Atletic Departments in the USA to finish in the black. Football produced a Net Profit of $40,444,162. Men's Basketball was the only other program that earned a positive net profit; far behind what Football brought in. From the College Data Analytics Team (the go-to site for college sports financial information) site: "On the money side of things, the UO women's basketball program brought home $1,900,170 in revenue and paid out $5,043,054 in total expenses for a net loss of ($3,147,884.) As Bill Parcells once opined: "You are what your record says you are." But looking at the financial situation does this ipso facto mean that Kelly Graves should be fired? James Crepea notes that Graves's buyout through 2028 is $1.5 million, considerably less than the $6 million plus he will earn under his contract. Per Crepea - "He [Graves] is the only women's basketball coach at a public school with a losing record in 2023-24." When it comes to the NFL and big-time profitable college football, I agree with Bill. Considering the bottom line, what would the ROI be if Coach Graves is terminated for $1.5 million? Is the game worth the candle? Was the program in the black when Sabrina was here? Sabrina's teams dropped more money to the bottom line but still did not make a profit, A handful of women's basketball teams are profitable. The women's championship game between Iowa and South Carolina had more people watching than the men's championship game between UConn and Purdue. Yet, because of the difference in media contracts, the women's tournament did not produce bottom-line revenue for the NCAA and member schools. In the case of Coach Graves, another agent out-negotiated an athletic director. A contract extension was warranted but for six seasons at $1 million plus? The competition will ratchet up with UCLA and USC women's programs coming along for an already difficult B1G ride. But until such a time as women's basketball is in the black, does it make more sense to pay $1.5 million for a Rob Mullens mistake, or give Coach Graves a chance to turn things around?

A DUCK at the Masters
Unfortunately, Wyndham missed the cut. The course was windy and brutal the first three days. Calmer today with a current temperature of 84 degrees and very little wind. Amateur Neal Shipley was the only amateur to make the cut and played with Tiger Woods today, which he described as an unforgettable experience. Like Jack Nicklaus, Shipley plays his college golf at Ohio State where he has earned his undergraduate degree and a master's degree in data analytics. Tiger shot 5 over today; Shipley was one over. Like football, I think that Ohio State, out of the 'traditional' B1G schools, will be Oregon's toughest opponent in Men's and Women's golf.

Holy Crap! Oregon Was a Top-10 Defense Last Year?
The D played well in 2023, Disappointing ending to the conference champ game but with the O struggling in the 1st Q the D was on the field facing many plays from a terrific UW O. I think 2024 will show additional improvement. It would be nice to have one more big body on the DL. Maybe plucked from the spring portal? August 31st. Long time to have to wait for a B1G Christmas.

With the Portal Reopening this Week, Here's a Good Look at the State of the Game
Watching Chip Kelly on the sideline in Ohio State gear yesterday, during the Buckeyes Spring Game attended by 80,012 fans, was unusual and interesting. As Chip said when interviewed by Fox's Joel Klatt and asked about the move from UCLA: "I just want to coach football." This a succinct answer at a time when College Football has never been more popular, and at a time when the regulation of College Football has been neutered; especially, when it comes to holding a roster together. Football coaches have to recruit high schools, recruit the transfer portal, and then re-recruit players they have already recruited. There is no control over transfers, including multiple transfers by a player in the same season, and tampering is the name of today's game with no one able to spank those doing the tampering. Football coaches also have to be fundraisers, doing everything they can to ensure that adequate NIL money is available. This Yahoo Sports article, with a focus on the B1G, is a good recap of where the game stands today. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Charles Dickens. Michigan, Michigan State football among teams facing great unknown as transfer portal opens SPORTS.YAHOO.COM Since spring practice began with Michigan football and MSU, Tuesday's opening of the transfer portal has loomed in the distance. Now it's almost here.

2024 BIG Info, Predictions, Etc.
Post-game, Fox shows Ohio State's 2024 schedule. Urban Meyer, who was in Oregon yesterday: "The red letter game on the schedule before The Game, is October 12th at Oregon. I haven't yet watched a game there, but I understand that 65,000 (?) Oregon fans make as much noise as in any stadium in America." I think Urban and friends will be in Eugene on the 12th for the pregame show and the game telecast. I expect Game Day will be in Dallas for the Oklahoma/Texas game. Also on the 12th, Penn State at USC, and Ole Miss at LSU. It's only a Spring game but there were lots of quality Ohio State football players on the field on both O and D. Interesting to see Chipper in Buckeyes garb. Will Howard started at QB and played better than the other, talented but young, QBs.

Our Fight Song vs Theirs ...
In 1898, the Michigan Wolverines won the Thanksgiving Day annual game vs. the University of Chicago Phoenix to capture its first Western Conference championship and become the Champions of the West. The U Chicago mascot name, 'Phoenix', came about as the result of the city's dramatic recovery from The Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Along with Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Northwestern, Michigan and Chicago formed The Western Conference in 1895. Iowa and Indiana joined in 1899. Ohio State came aboard in 1912 at which time the Western Conference became the Big Ten Conference. In 1939, U Chicago dropped football because the sport was becoming too 'professional' in nature. The Phoenix was ahead of the curve. In 1949, Michigan State joined the conference to return the B1g Ten to 10 teams. Hopefully, on 11/2/24, the Ducks will win the day in Ann Arbor and square the series at 3 apiece versus the Victors.

Our Fight Song vs Theirs ...
'On Wisconsin', Ohio State's 'Cross the Field' and 'Buckeye Battle Cry,' Fight, Fight, Fight for Iowa' are all great, but "Hail to the Victors' is iconic and probably a close second to 'Cheer, Cheer for Old Notre Dame.' 'Fight On?' I think the needle got stuck. 'The Victors' celebrates Michigan winning a big game and being anointed 'Champions of the West.' What team did Michigan defeat to become 'The Champion of the West?' Try to answer without getting Webby. I imagine several OBD members, at least, know the answer. If not revealed, I'll post the answer soon. Ohio State is playing its Spring Game as I type, broadcast on Fox. (Revealed today that Chip is being paid $2M a year. Equates to $4M a year in LA.) Becoming a part of great traditions is B1G.

Beaver Baseball Future: A Decline or Remain a Power?
Oregon State will be an Independent in baseball in 2025. Rob Mullens will probably schedule a home-and-home series with the Beavers.
