last series...arrogance, stubbornness, or incompetence
Haywarduck replied to webfootfan's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
My couch team saw the same thing. We needed a coach couch on the sideline, or at least up in the box! I can see it now, 'coming through the headset the coach couch is yelling WT?%($#&@$!!!!!!!.' One of those where it is what is the upside, I mean really, and what could go wrong! Not good for my mental health, then or now. Definitely on the top ten head scratcher moves by Cristobal, way up on the list. -
So many questions at qb, that is definitely one response to what we are seeing. I just can't go there, still hopeful one of the young guns has it. The main problem I see is it seems Mario loves AB's limitations as much as he likes his abilities. It seem Mario just wants a game manager, run the ball, hit the wide open receiver in the end zone, good enough. Does Mario really want a qb who can sling it? Time will tell, but Mario brought in AB, at the expense of the young qb's and receivers. Will he do it again? I think if he does it will come at the detriment to the longterm health of the Oregon Football Program. We recruit, develop and play talent, but at qb we haven't done that for many years. The Oregon Football Program will be defined by the qb position next year, bank on it.

As you undoubtedly know, you learn the most from your defeats. The problem is, as many fear, we may not be learning. Most think we would lose to tosu if we played them again. The same might be said about Utah. Learning means adjusting and adapting to what one sees. I don't see that as much with the coaching staff. Maybe that is just because of what I see and expect from the qb position. Time will tell, and there is... still hope!

What worries me is sometimes talent can win games. Other times coaching outweighs talent. Last night the coaching was the issue, in my opinion. Smith is another wily coach who will have his team ready, much like Whittingham. We need to, have to win at home, and play Utah again if this season is to finish well. If we can keep building, and not let the foundation fall apart then all is good. Right now, I see cracks in the foundation of what this season was, and hopefully still is.

He isn't a dynamic throwing qb, end of story. His functional answer to almost every question is run. When he is going to pass his limitations are glaring and it is interesting teams haven't taken advantage of this weakness more than they have. Last night Williams was standing still in the end zone and he luckily saw him and placed the ball in the correct spot. He made a couple throws he much have practiced a thousand times, other than that he missed. The dynamic throws, where he has to read the defense, just don't happen. The question I have is, does Mario want him to throw the crafty throw, or just go through a couple progressions, and tuck and run? I suppose we will have to wait until we have a throwing qb, but we have what Mario wanted. We have a pound it qb who got us to where we are, which I am grateful for. The questions I have can't be answered this season, it would seem.

Great ponder point which leaves us wondering just how good or bad are the guys on the bench? We see Cardwell and are encouraged about the future. Even the young receivers give us hope, but we are left with a big question at qb. I agree, yesterday was the perfect time to give one of the young guys a chance, especially after we iced the game with the punt to end the half.

I was interested in the attitudes and culture issues which seemed to be coming out of the closet. The defense seem to give in a little. The offense seem to have some disfunction between AB and the rest of the players. The defensive effort seemed like the OSU game last year. While Sewell is like a large shopvac, which sucks up anything within sight, reach. I will be interested in others insights, but the defense which has been formidable, was anything but. Next week against an offensive coach, it will be difficult if we don't remedy the problems. On offense AB was, well AB, but this time the team didn't rally around him and make up for his weaknesses. What I saw was Mycah type attitude in Devon. The young receivers showed their potential, but they couldn't make up for the weaknesses of AB. The running game wasn't intimidating with AB even struggling with going north, south. With Camden even missing field goals kicks, it seemed the whole team was on the same page, the wrong page. Can we get to another chapter in Oregon football or we just need to turn the page, that is the question. For those who enjoyed Lost in Space, you might enjoy the play on B-9 and how our machine didn't fair too well.

We will have to see who lines up next week and who shows up to play. It was almost like the players started to believe it was a miracle they were #3 and all they had to do was believe the miracle was true. The problem was the Utes didn't believe in the miracle and remembered the last time we embarrassed them. I thought the qb room would be the place where the discontent could fester. Seems like the receiver room may have, and may be infecting the team. We will see next week. One thing, aren't AB and Williams roommates? There seemed to be something going on between the two. Putting your hands up and motioning where the ball should have been doesn't seem to be what roommates, let alone teammates do, right?

Agree Cristobal showed great grace until it became clear Pittman wasn't able to turn his attitude around. When you show you can't put team in front of yourself, then the door has to be opened for the player to leave. I do think this takes a bit more discussion because it isn't just a player who wasn't getting playing time, chances on the field, or an offseason move. This was a player whose attitude out weighted his positive football skills. This one lines up like Colt, or Blount, a player who steps over the line, and although they have great skill, can't be part of the team as it stood. I'm sometimes surprised it doesn't happen more often, kudos to Cristobal for keeping the team together as well as he has.

It is like the refs, an excuse you can't let effect the game. Agree drink lots of water, and fortunately we don't play hurry up too often. These are well conditioned athletes, not weekend warriors trying to run a marathon at altitude. I will admit Cardwell might looked gassed after a couple of his long runs. His teammates can carry him back to the bench from the end zone for oxygen and he will be ready to go for the next one!

That would be an interesting twist, the passing game takes off, love it!

Utah Game-Score Prediction Contest!

--the winner 10-1 --the score, and the tiebreaker information needed from each of you is... 44-15, yes again! --the amount of turnovers Oregon creates, 3 game changer --the number of sacks Oregon records on the opposing team 5 game changer --the number of passing yards. 180 yards, going to run those Utes over, and over! -
Oregon’s Offense is Becoming Watchable
Haywarduck replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Which creates the question, for me, is it that much harder to develop a passing attack, than a running attack? I get it you need a qb who can throw the rock, but how hard is it to read zones, get receivers open and the receivers catch the ball, with regularity? With the running game you really just need a dynamic running back. With a passing game you need a qb who can throw, read a defense, and the receivers get open and catch. There are many other moving parts, but the main components are much smaller, skill wise, with a running game. The offense is getting exciting again because we are seeing innovation on the running plays, which are working. I don't see the innovation in the passing game, nor the receivers showing real dominance. Certainly the qb seems limited in his passing, but the plays aren't there. Bubble screens, effective crossing routes, and situations where I just want to watch our passing game in action, aren't happening, thoughts? -
Good one, wouldn't doubt it. The job of a great receiver isn't all glory and some just don't want to put in the work, or hear about the work needed.

Update; Lane Kiffin would leave his mom on the side of the freeway in the middle of the winter, for the next best job anywhere! No news there, Slater Scoop!

I will also say, maybe the last item, but I can't guarantee it, we haven't produced NFL talent at wide receiver in the recent past. The receivers have to know they will be trying to pave a new path, create something that isn't, hasn't been there. If they thought they were just getting in an NFL wideout pipeline, they didn't do their research. Maybe the Tight Ends have seen Ducks playing TE in the NFL, not receivers. It is possible, but it will take a lot of work, and the schools where that is happening, it is a tough go for playing time. My take is the other receivers see the talent behind AB and are willing to wait, most likely. The other scenario is they don't see the talent and we do see an exodus. I think the first scenario is what happens, stay tuned!

The "Mario Cristobal" Effect on the Conference
Haywarduck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I hope that was called 'The Larry Effect' and we have somebody capable working on that. You're right, the trend isn't our friend. -
I get the angst when you feel there was a bait and switch. Many fans are just now adjusting to the new Oregon offense. I just have a hard time seeing a kid leave when he is an important part of the team, the season is in crunch time, you become a distraction, and then walk away from it all. Just like with slick, I get being interested in the FSU job. It was how he left. I also give a student athlete more understanding with the decision he made, best of luck!
