I jumped over to the USC roster and every O-Lineman is tall, and nearly all are over 300 pounds. ..

Those tall O-Linemen might have to work harder to get their center of gravity lower than the defenders, though. "It's all about leverage." 😉

Being happy as a team after you get a 3 and out is fine, or a big stop. But showboating  on just making a tackle? Fundamentals aren't flashy, but they work.

I think the defensive players should not celebrate until they've stopped the other team, whether by forcing a punt, stopping on 4th down, creating a fumble, or by interception. Many times, with teams both college and professional, we've seen a great defensive play on first or second down, only to be followed by the opponent then getting a first down. And even when  the defense has prevailed, they should celebrate with their teammates, not by trash talking.

I actually think Chip was pretty good at all three while at Oregon. With a little help in recruiting he could have taken us over the hump, almost did.

The big item I am speaking to is being the CEO, probably the biggest job, if they can step away from being a control freak. I think this was the downfall of both Cristobal and Chip. They became control freaks and couldn't delegate important roles. I think the culture of the coaches, players and program is the most critical part. Taking control and then guiding the program strongly is the hidden part we don't often see. Chip did this very well, Bellotti did it very well for a long time, but it wained.

We see this in corporations, schools and many places. The leader, whether quietly, or loudly can make or break an organization by how he/she leads.  I am just wondering what dynamic Lanning will have with this element. What type of leadership will he provide with the Oregon Football Program and can he provide the strong leadership a program like ours needs?

With Chip  (IMHO) it was his condescending attitude to the local press (I always thought he sucked up to ESPN and other major networks, and he obviously basked in the glow of Erin Andrews), and, from what I saw & heard, his reluctance to schmooze with donors and be friendly to fans, and I think those things are part of being a good coach (not necessary to be a winning coach, but what I would call a good coach).

  4. I couldn't get the link to work, but I remember when the movie was made, and I've seen it a few times. I have set foot in the president's office where the horse collapses, when I was helping to chaperone kids in my daughter's 5th grade class. President Boyd talked to the kids for a few minutes (but not about Animal House 😉 ). I ate lunch at the restaurant near Dexter Lake where part of the movie was filmed--it was a few years later and the decor in part of one room at that time was as it looked in the movie.

    I'm on the right.

  5. One thing is--where does the money come from?

I don't know what it's like at other universities, but Oregon is a "state-supported" school with the state contributing only about 10% of what it costs to run the university. The university does a lot of fundraising. Some donors make huge contributions to the academic and/or sports side. (And there are many big donors other than the one that immediately springs to mind. 🙂 )
