  1. Nope don't see it diminishing the regular season at all.  Sure in some cases both teams playing for a conference championship may already be in, but only one can be top four with a bye.  That's a really big deal IMHO.

Besides, look at the bubble teams.  If we were at 12 teams this year, Iowa, Louisville and Okie State could get in with a win in their conference championship games.  That's a whole lot of incentive, and Michigan, FSU and Texas would all be playing for a first round bye.  Tell me that wouldn't matter to the teams involved?

  2. Texas is the one that concerns me.  They are unlikely to lose to Okie State so will probably be a one-loss conference champion with their only loss to Okiehoma and a win over Alabama.  Hopefully Alabama will be a two-loss team if Georgia beats them, but if Alabama wins then all bets are off.

That said, control what we can control.  If we don't finish then all the hypotheticals are irrelevant.

  3. FWIW-

Sir Charles you're quite entertaining when you have your knickers in a knot about something. 😉

Beavs and Wazzu are in a tough spot, I get it, but in case they haven't figured it out it's every man for himself in this current realignment.  I hate having the networks control the direction of college football with their divide and conquer strategy, but it's adapt or die and for now that's just how it is.  The market has indeed spoken.

It is reasonable for OSU/WSU to control the direction of the conference, they're the last ones standing (or left out, however you want to look at it).  The then-remaining 10 did the same when they boxed the LA schools out of the board meetings.  What is not reasonable is trying to abscond with the earnings of all 12 schools while they are still active members.  That money has already been earned by the entire conference and each school still deserves their full share, even the traitorous LA schools.

A bit of irony here, we're using the same argument against OSU/WSU that the Spoiled Children used against us in that our media brand is propping up the conference and it's bottom tier.  As much as I hate the condoms and their entitled fan base, they did make a fair point here (we found out when we could only get $25 million/year without them).  Touche, I guess the shoe's on the other foot now, but I'll always hate the way they burned it all down on their way out the door.

  4. On Tyler Schuck, not a chance.  That ship has sailed, time to move on and I doubt he would consider it anyway.  Looks to me like ASU is in desperate need of a QB.

Best case is we already have next year's starter in our QB room (including 2024 recruits).  This might seem unlikely, but it would be a real positive in my book to be able to recruit and develop our own talent.  Maybe that doesn't matter as much any more with the transfer portal, but championship teams don't seem to need the portal much.

Of course Bo was a transfer, but I think as a first-year coach DL was looking for his own guy to build a ream around.  Once he has a few years of his own recruits in the "progrum" this shouldn't be needed as much IMHO.

Not yet officially approved by the MW. The Sun Belt already turned down OSU and WSU's offer of an alliance. I'm not sure why the MW would approve this knowing down the road that the Pac-2 would likely try and poach MW teams.

Sorry I don't have a link for you Jon but I read on one of my feeds that there are "substantial" penalties if the Pac-2 do any kind of a merger without all of the current MWC members.

I guess we all suspect that relegation is bound to happen at some point, but it looks like the MWC has this covered for now.

  6. I'm with you on this one Jon.

If I'm RM the first thing I do is dump BSU and pencil in the Beavs for their slot.

Then I cancel all future non-conference games and reschedule with former P-12 members and cupcakes.

We're just not going to need the extra exposure like we would have.  As a season ticket holder I'm thrilled with our upcoming schedules without any ot the existing scheduled non-cons, they just water it down IMHO.

  7. I'm just not a fan of home night games in November.  I live in Southern Oregon (season tickert holder) so that day is a travel day regardless; I really don't get any more out of my Saturday.  If it's an away night game, then I get my whole Saturday to do something and there's lots to do this time of year.

November weather is what it is and I can live with that, but for me it's just more enjoyable in the daylight.

That said, there's no way I'm missing this one.  I was there for Fright Night and it was absolutely electric.  I'm hoping for the same on Saturday.

  8. FWIW here's my $.02:

This is a deal with devil, but really what choice did we have?

I was hoping for fewer night games, but we may wind up with more.  West Coast matchups will probably all be at night.  The good news here is that we only play two of those in conference.  I personally don't believe that our conference home games with Central or Eastern time zone teams will be at night, their fans would have a fit.

That said, I can see all our non-conference games being at night this year.  There is a silver linging IMHO in that night games are much more palatable in September than November, maybe even preferable.

I would hope that the Friday night games get divvied up equally, but that probably won't happen.  I just don't see Michigan or tOSU playing on a Friday night (hope I'm wrong here, but I think they'll get preferential scheduling just like USuC has all these year in the P-12).

The one thing that won't change is that the teams with the best records and ratings will get the best time slots.  That at least is something we can control.

  9. I can't really argue much with the numbers, they just don't mean as much after losing to the fuskies again and let's face they're a bit inflated because of PSU and Hawaii.

That said, I think we've got the right staff in place and I'm anxious to see how this team responds against wazoo and then finishes the season. I'm not penciling in a fusky rematch just yet, but it's a very real possibility IMHO.

  10. I don't feel any differently about this team, I'm not sure how you could ask much more out of the players.

That said, Lanning's in-game decisions are a work in progress.  All 4th down attempts are not the same, I totally agree with that last attempted conversion, it was very makable and if it succeeds then it's victory formation.  Penix is too good to give him the last possession, even if it does wind up being a long field for him our corners were pretty dinged and he has more than enough time to put together a game-winning drive.

However I hated not taking the field goals earlier, especially the one right before halftime.  There was no advantage to giving them a long field if we failed on the TD conversion since it was the last play of the half.  Sure Cam has struggled a bit as of late, but that was essentially an extra point which he hasn't missed yet this year.  Take the damn free points and go into haltime with some momentum.

I am curious, have you seen an “elite” offense (other than OBD) this year?

All top-5 scoring offenses besides the Ducks (USC, OK, UW, WSU) are paas-heavy and have questionable O-line play.

Without the OR game, the Buffs are averaging 46+ points per game, which would rank 11th. (I never played football, so I just boil everything down to scoring.)

Holding the 11th best scoring offense to 6 points is kind of mind-blowing. And I could see CU breaking into the top 10 before the season is over.

Clearly "elite" is a subjective term, IMHO a balanced offense that scores a lot of points would be the paradigm.  That said, all points count the same regardless of how they're scored.  So yes, to answer your question pass-heavy offenses such as those you mentioned can absolutely be elite.  I just think that having an offense that can also pound the ball can be very advantageous, especially in November.  That's why I agree with David and I also like our odds for a strong finish.

I'm not taking anything away from our defense in the Colorado game, it was the best defensive performance I can remember seeing in years.  We leave the starters in and we most likely get a shutout.

That said, you can't do a statistical analysis by ignoring inconvenient data points.  As it now stands, Colorado is #40 in scoring offense which is not elite.  Yes Shedeur Sanders has put up some great passing numbers, but he also has lots of negative rushing yards from sacks (which are not entirely his fault).  SS may indeed by an "elite" QB, I'm not saying he isn't, but as a whole the Colorado offense is not and their O-line is clearly not up to the task.

Some might argue that had Colorado not been boat-raced by the Ducks, the Buffs would be considered an elite offense. They are putting up gaudy numbers other than that game.

Bit of a stretch if you ask me, no running game and a QB that's on his back more than any other in the country.  My definition of an "elite" offense would have to include a solid, if not dominant O-line.  Plus the only number that really matters is points and Colorado is currently ranked #40 in scoring offense, just not "elite" to me. YMMV.

  13. I completely agree with your analysis at this point in the season.

    But-

We have yet to face either an elite offense or an elite defense.

A month from now we'll know a lot more as we will have faced the offenses of the Washington schools and the defenses of Utah and Cal.

Then comes November and we face USC and arguably the best defense in the conference this year in the Civil War.

I'm cautiously optimistic as usual, but this season could still go either way IMHO.

  14. OK if I'm reading the schedule correctly, the Ducks, fuskies, Utah and the spoiled children all play each other this year.  If one of those teams is fortunate enough to beat the other three and win the rest of their conference games, they still will most likely have to face one of the others in a rematch in the P-12 Championship.  Sounds like your typical Pac-12 bloodbath to me, so it's going to be hard enough to get one team into the playoffs, let alone two.

I really don't think Oregon State and Washington State fans/admins want to continue the games out of spite.  I don't think it will be an issue later.  Let it go a number of years until they miss it...

At some point they're going to crave the exposure they'd get from playing a nationally televised game again,  probably won't get much of that in the Pac-X or MWC. That said I find it highly doubtful that game would be played on rivalry weekend, hopefully the weekend before but it could wind up being played in September.

Until I see it with my own eyes, I will not believe that we will be a shut down defense just based on the hype of incoming transfers or freshmen.

Couldn't have said it better.  Last year's D couldn't stop the rodents on a single drive in the 4th quarter when they were running every play and everyone knew it, WITH THE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE LINE.  Same with the fusky game, one stop in the 4th quarter and we win that game, not to mention DL/KD probably don't go for it on 4th down around our own 30-yard line if they trust the defense to make a stop.

Maybe we can give them credit for a win in the Utah game, but IMO Cam Rising and his receivers had a terrible game.  The Autzen environment probably had a lot to do with that and we don't win that game in Rice-Eccles IMHO.

I'm cautiously optimistic as I always am (especially this time of year), but expecting a quantum leap in defense in year two may be a bit much to ask.
