Five Takeaways from the UCLA Win
On the last touchdown run by AB the right guard Dawson Jaramillo pulls left and kicks out the defensive end, the tight end DJ Johnson (H back) pulls left turns up into the hole and delivers a block on the Safety freeing AB for the touchdown! UCLA linebackers took themselves out of the play going with the initial flow. This is a smart play we discussed October 13 - the Counter! Great timing on calling this play Joe Moorhead!

UCLA GameDay Thread: Watch for Chip Kelly’s Best Play
Thank you for sharing the outside zone read tutorial. So simple to block and so smart to use. The analysis was easy to follow. Teaching linemen to "take their man where he wants to go" creates those huge running lanes. I love watching the backs read the linemen's blocks and having the vision to see the hole. They were taught so well by Coach Gary Campbell.

Always say Dye!
Great tag line for my favorite running back on this year's team! "Always say Dye!"

Moorhead Offense: Fly Sweep Threat Enhances Oregon’s Speed Option
Thanks Coach Boles for the analysis and video! Those linebackers and safety do bite on the fly sweep and especially the mike reading the inside zone blocking of the line. The multiple ways to attack the defense really uses the speed of Oregon's players. And is so unpredictable and smarter!

It’s Okay to Be Disappointed With Mario Cristobal
Thanks for the article Joshua! You make a well written argument for expressing the disappointment many fans have. You give proper credit for the good things MC is doing for the Duck program. In addition no one can question Mario's good work ethic, honesty, and connection to the players. "Disappointment" is a good word to describe my feelings this season. The young talent is there. Play it! The 6th year senior quarterback without a doubt does not have the decision making ability or the vision to play quarterback. Bench him! I'm disappointed that Oregon coaches do not coach up the young quarterbacks and get them ready to play. I'm disappointed that Oregon coaches are so stubborn and settle for a "game manager" instead of a leader! I thought one tenet of the culture was to instill competition. When you can't perform the next guy takes your place! So far I guess QB is an exception!

Ducks Must Rely on Defense
I too think that the pressure provided by the return of KT will help the defense step up. Nothing like a harried QB to cause incompletions and interceptions. With linebackers helping to stop the run, crossing patterns have hurt the Ducks' deep zone coverage. I think Kelly will plan for this. When WSU gets its act together they are very dangerous in their passing attack against our deep zone. Here's hoping the defense makes a dominate statement!

Oregon’s Offensive Spark Comes From the RB
I love the game Travis Dye had against California! He always has been the explosive back we just saw. His effort against Stanford was superb. Travis is gifted with great quickness and good vision! Because he is quick to slide step to a developing hole, he never goes down on first contact. He is tough and has gotten stronger since his first year. He is now a leader of this team! Go Dye! Go Ducks!

Last play of the game. Shotgun snap.
Under center would add the QB sneak for 4th and short situations. Also add potential play action run or pass.
-
Still Processing Too? I do not Know WHAT to Make of it...
Question: last play of the game - 2 seconds until over. Why the shotgun snap? AB had several bobbled snaps earlier in the game. If he fumbles and Cal recovers they either tie with PAT kick (then it's overtime) or win with 2 point PAT. Can our quarterback take a snap under center? Take a knee with a secure snap. It's called victory formation!

Cal GameDay Thread: A 2021 Crossroads Game?
I think coaches should coach and not go on recruiting trip during a bye week! Coaching the players you have maybe we wouldn't be so undisciplined and unorganized!

Thibodeaux: Goals Away from Football Field More Important
Thanks for the article! Nice to hear KT is a well rounded caring young man! I will love cheering him on the field and wish him the best in everything he does off the field!

Quarterback Quandary: What Would Former Oregon Coaches Do?
I think Belotti would go with someone who could throw accurately and able to complete the deep throw. His passing offense needed a throwing QB. I fondly remember all the deep throws to Samie Parker. Beating the Huskies in Seattle and the Fiesta Bowl 2 of my favorites!

An Offensive "System" at Oregon?
I'm sure all coordinators take input from position coaches. Which should happen. Does anyone think that Chip Kelly led a committee? I think not. The "blur" was and always will be Chip Kelly.
-
An Offensive "System" at Oregon?
We know that Justin Herbert has a new offensive coordinator who has a system and a head coach who has given both of them the green light. I doubt it is an offense by committee.
-
An Offensive "System" at Oregon?
We learned Oregon has a "system" for developing and calling the offense. “If Joe is out that’ll be the scenario,” Cristobal said. “When we do call it, everything we do we collaborate. We do it collectively; as we did when Joe was here as well. The system is the system. We’re not going to change systems.” Is the system responsible for the type of offense we've seen this year? Is the system why we haven't seen the total Moorhead offense? Some say the camel was designed by a committee. Is the system why we have an offense that is so ugly.

CJ verdell out for the season
I always considered Dye a good back deserving of more playing time. This season he is playing so much better! It will be nice to have the younger backs get more playing time now that Verdell is out for the season.

Moorhead Offense: Oregon’s Split Zone RPO
I'm new to the RPO scheme of offense. At first glance I love the multiple ways one can attack. However, the key is having a QB make good reads and wise decisions quickly! So far this year we have a 6th year senior making bad reads and wrong decisions. Coaches have the incredibly important decision to choose wisely. At this point if Brown is the choice call the exact play. Don't have him read or make a decision. But then why use him at QB?

Where are Oregons receivers?
In regards to "no block no rock", a wide open receiver will do wonders to open the running game. Instead of a running back blocking a 250 lb linebacker or a 300 lb defensive tackle he would be more effective running a pass route. And less chance of being injured!
-
The Trenches
I've been wondering if all the injuries are because Oregon practices are too physical! I also thought the strength and conditioning coach would lead to less injury. Many of the injuries are non contact. Does anyone have information on why so many?

What shift would you like to see in CristoBall?
We have seen Oregon try to use hurry up offense this year a few times and in the past. However, it has not happened because by rule if offense has substituted then the defense is allowed to substitute. It seems our coaches always substitute personnel. We don't ever achieve a faster tempo. The line ref stands over the ball while the defender takes his time walking onto the field. This in effect negates any hurry up. I don't think Oregon has had an effective hurry up for a long time. One of the things I thought Coach Moorhead brought to Oregon was using the same personnel group in different formations. Ideal for hurry up - never having to substitute. With the tight ends Oregon has on the roster, hurry up tempo would be devastating. You could go from a 13 power set to two wide outs and a slot without substituting! Webb, Johnson, Ferguson, and Matavao could add another dimension to a passing offense!

Stanford GameDay Thread: Go Ducks!
Brown can't pass. Just about every throw is behind the receiver. He is consistently making the wrong decision to keep. What does he not see? 3 UO linemen going backwards and red shirts coming at him with no where to run and he chooses to try to push all of them over the goal line. Why is he the QB? Too many poor decisions. Why aren't we using our speed to go outside more?
