  1. For the first time since 1968, the clock will no longer stop on first down in college football, at all levels aside from Division III. The clock will continue to stop after first downs during the last two minutes of each half. The Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the rule change on Friday after the NCAA Football Rules Committee suggested the change in March. The PROP is also expected to approve two additional amendments to the current rules: teams will be prohibited from calling consecutive timeouts, and penalties at the end of the first and third quarters are now to be enforced at the beginning of the second and fourth quarters. 2. Which teams have best shot at Pac-12 Championship in 2023? In the final year of the Pac-12 conference, as we currently know it, we are expecting as competitive and entertaining of a football season as we’ve seen in quite some time. With schools like USC, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Oregon State, and UCLA all presenting a legitimate case that they could make some noise this season, the race for a spot in the Pac-12 Championship Game is going to be highly contentious. There are some early favorites for a spot in Las Vegas, with the Trojans, Ducks, Huskies, and Utes all ranking highest in the preseason polls at the moment. But one method we always like to use when peering ahead at the future is ESPN’s Football Power Index. For those unfamiliar with ESPN’s FPI, it is a ranking that “relies on past performance on offense and defense, returning and transfer production and past recruiting data for players on the roster to form a rating.” Virtually, it’s ESPN’s way of declaring the top teams in the nation, looking at their roster, their schedule, their percent chance to win each game, and where that ultimately lands them after the season comes to an end. The FPI predicts end-of-season records, and the probability that a team will become bowl eligible, or win the conference championship. So how do they see the Pac-12 playing out this year? It might look a little bit different than you would have expected. Breaking down Pac-12 conference championship odds via ESPN FPI DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM You could argue that 5-6 teams have a legitimate shot at the Pac-12 title this year. Who has the best odds to take it down?
  3. War Daddy Recruit: Breaking down the contenders for No. 3 prospect Williams Nwaneri Two years ago, the nation was still struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic and it was tough for teachers and coaches to get to know kids at school with all the restrictions. Jamar Mozee eyed a “tall, skinny kid” wearing a mask in the cafeteria and approached him with the idea of adding another big-framed body to the roster thinking Nwaneri was going to tell him that he was a basketball player. That’s when Williams Nwaneri first told him he’s a football player that had sent him that Twitter message. Nwaneri says he still has that message saved. “He says you never answered me,” Mozee said with a laugh, adding he never heard from Nwaneri from eighth grade football in the area as well. “He swears by it.” The season was unfortunately halfway over at that point, but Mozee and the now nearly 6-foot-7, 260-pound Nwaneri have been on the same page ever since. Nwaneri was excited to start attending offseason workouts leading into his sophomore campaign and he hasn’t missed a day since. He’s gone from having a hard time doing box push-ups to dominating every snap of a varsity football game... War Daddy Recruit: Breaking down the contenders for No. 3 prospect Williams Nwaneri 247SPORTS.COM Williams Nwaneri is a naturally-gifted late-bloomer who saw his recruitment take off like a rocket ship.
  4. FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT: APRIL 20 THE DUCKS PRACTICED INSIDE THE MOSHOFSKY CENTER ON THURSDAY AND WILL BE IN AUTZEN STADIUM ON SATURDAY FOR A SCRIMMAGE When he took the job as running backs coach at Oregon, Carlos Locklyn made a pledge to one of his predecessors in the job. Every day since, he's worked hard to keep it, by driving home a simple message to the Ducks' backs. "When you come in this room," Locklyn said following the Ducks' spring practice Thursday, "you are going to compete. I made a promise to Coach (Gary) Campbell — I said that I am going to charge myself with bringing this room back where it's supposed to be at. So I tell these kids all the time, you come here, you're going to earn it." Locklyn has gone about assembling a position group with the depth and talent to foster heated competition. From last year's team, the Ducks return two players in Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington who combined for nearly 1,900 rushing yards; each rushed for five touchdowns, as did yet another returner this spring, Jordan James. New recruits Dante Dowdell and Jayden Limar joined the fray this offseason, and the unit is bolstered by some talented, hard-working non-scholarship guys as well. 5. Oregon WR commit Dallas Wilson quickly rising among top-ranked players in 2025 class On January 17, 2023, a player by the name of Dallas Wilson announced that he was committing to the Oregon Ducks. I had never heard of him, and I’m sure that a lot of Oregon fans were with me in asking “Who?” when the news came out. Upon further research, it turned out that Wilson was a wide receiver from Florida in the class of 2025 who had received an offer from Oregon just hours before offering his verbal commitment. He was unrated by all of the major recruiting websites, so it was hard to get a feeling for how excited fans were to get about his commitment. He looked good, but nobody knew too much about him just yet. They’re quickly learning... 7. Our 2nd thread for this topic has reached a 3rd page and has gotten too cumbersome to handle. So, I am starting a new thread (No. 3). NJDuck and I have never gone through a whole year cycle of postings regarding recruiting before, so this has been a learning experience. Along with the fact that Coach Lanning and his crew are such good recruiters, this thread grows quickly. If you need to refer back to postings from the original (#1) thread, click here. 9. Oregon newcomer Jordan Burch drawing rave reviews in spring ball Oregon needs a much better pass rush in 2023, and so upgrading the talent on the edge was a major area of emphasis for the coaching staff this offseason. To that end, securing a commitment from former South Carolina defensive end Jordan Burch was a huge win. And Burch, a 5-star prospect as a recruit, has lived up to the billing so far this spring for the Ducks. “Jordan Burch coming in, he’s been excellent off the edge,” said former Rhode Island tackle Ajani Cornelius. “He’s a strong dude. He’s not your typical end out there. He’s heavy, and he’s quick. So him being that heavy, sometimes you want to expect, but he’s a true athlete, especially for his size.” That back-and-forth between Burch and Cornelius should be an “iron sharpens iron” situation for the Ducks. 14. OT Ajani Cornelius on first spring camp with Oregon: '(It) forced me to raise my level of competition' Only seven University of Rhode Island players have been drafted since 1972. For offensive tackle Ajani Cornelius, the transfer portal offered him the chance to compete against the top talents in the country at a school like Oregon. The move, over 3,000 miles away, is not typical. And for Cornelius, there were plenty of suitors between Kingston, RI, and Eugene, OR. But, after nearly 20 offers and visits to Oregon, Ohio State, and Tennessee, Oregon came away with the talented tackle. Spring camp at Oregon was a different level for Cornelius and a serious jump from the competition he once faced at Rhode Island. "Well, when you go into a new environment, it's always going to be different things," said Cornelius on the challenges he's faced during spring camp. "I would say early on, it was obvious that the level of competition had risen. And that forced me to raise my level of competition, which ultimately was what I wanted, and it's been a great thing for me. I feel like I keep on growing as a player because of it."
