  3. LANNING, PAIR OF DUCKS LAND ON WATCH LISTS Oregon head coach Dan Lanning was named to the watch list for the 2023 Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Award on Tuesday, while defensive end Brandon Dorlus and offensive lineman Jackson Powers-Johnson landed on the midseason watch list for the 2023 Lombardi Award. Lanning is one of 26 head coaches on the watch list for the Bryant Award, which is given annually to the top head coach in college football. Lanning is one of five Pac-12 head coaches on the list. In his second season, Lanning has led the Ducks to a 5-1 start after going 10-3 with a win in the Holiday Bowl in 2022. Oregon leads the nation in both scoring offense (48.5 PPG) and total offense (553.3 YPG), and its much-improved defense under Lanning ranks 11th in scoring (15.8 PPG) and 13th in total defense (282.2 YPG). UO is one of just four teams in the nation to rank in the top 15 in both scoring offense and scoring defense. 4. Snap Count Takeaways: Major notes from Oregon's usage report vs. Washington One of the most valuable things that I think we do each week at Ducks Wire is go through the usage report for the Oregon Ducks and break down the snap counts, looking at what the numbers tell us. We can break down how much or how little each player played, and use that information to draw larger conclusions about the team going forward. Normally, the usage reports are most valuable in blowout games when we get to see hoards of young players get onto the field, offering us a look at potential depth chart rotations and future production. However, in games like we saw on Saturday where the Ducks went to the brink in a 36-33 loss to the Washington Huskies, we can also get a ton of value from the usage report, seeing which players the coaches feel comfortable relying on the most. That’s what we got in Week 7 for Dan Lanning and the Ducks. Here’s our look at the usage report, and some major takeaways from the numbers... 7. Prediction: Oregon to Land 2024 Tight End The Ducks are trending for one of the best playmakers in Rival Western region. Oregon is surging on the recruiting trail after picking up a commitment from 2024 Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei defensive linemen Aydin Breland on Saturday. Spots in the 2024 recruiting class are getting tight, but that also means that the coaches have a great feel for who they still have on the board this cycle, and more importantly, who they’re prioritizing. Today I'm ready to make a new prediction. I'm predicting 2024 Orem (Ut.) tight end Roger Saleapaga II to commit to the Oregon Ducks. 8. When should the Oregon-Washington game be played as part of Big Ten football schedule? Oregon and Washington will bring their intensifying rivalry to the Big Ten next season, but when the Pacific Northwest matchup will be played is still to be determined. The Big Ten formally announced the meeting of the Ducks and Huskies among its 12 protected matchups in its 2024-28 football schedules. Six of those games are played on the final weekend of the regular season, but it’s not a foregone conclusion that the Oregon-Washington game will join those other rivalry games on the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving, which has not happened in the rivalry since 1939... 10. We’re starting to see a trend, and it’s benefiting both the Oregon Ducks and the national television partners that are choosing to air their games. Once again, the Ducks were part of the most-watched game of the week in the world of college football, garnering 7.04 million viewers on the ABC telecast in Oregon’s game against the Washington Huskies, an instant classic that ended in a 36-33 loss. This is the second time this year that the Ducks have been the most-watched game of the day, with the other coming in Week 4 against the Colorado Buffaloes, a game that garnered 10.03 million viewers. Whether it’s the marquee time slot — 12:30 p.m. — or the national broadcast, it’s clear that people are tuning into see the Ducks. That isn’t likely to change any time soon, either, with both of Oreogn’s next two games coming at 12:30 p.m., aired on ABC and FOX, respectively. On Monday night, head coach Dan Lanning was asked how this national exposure has helped the recruiting world for the Ducks... 13. Where Oregon's offense ranks nationally in key stats following loss vs. Washington The Oregon Ducks had an incredibly impressive day on the offensive side of the ball Saturday in a 36-33 loss to the Washington Huskies. It could have been more impressive, too. The Ducks put up 541 total yards of offense and over 200 rushing yards with zero turnovers. They also were 0-for-3 on fourth down conversions, two of which came inside the Washington 10-yard line, and they missed a 43-yard field goal as time expired that could have sent the game into overtime. It’s safe to say that some points were left on the board. Despite all of those missed opportunities, Oregon’s offense is still among the nation’s elite after Week 7 of the 2023 season. Here’s where they rank statistically in some key areas... 15. No. 9 Oregon seeks better execution vs. Washington St. Washington State and No. 9 Oregon will both try to rebound from difficult losses when they meet in Eugene, Ore., on Saturday afternoon. Which defeat was more devastating remains to be seen. The Ducks fell 36-33 at then-No. 7 Washington last Saturday as Camden Lewis’ last-second, 43-yard field-goal attempt sailed just wide of the right upright. Meanwhile, Washington State was blown out 44-6 by Arizona the same day in Pullman, Wash. It was the second consecutive defeat for the Cougars (4-2, 1-2 Pac-12), who dropped out of the Top 25 after being ranked No. 13 before a 25-17 loss at UCLA on Oct. 7... 16. 'I can handle the criticism;' Dan Lanning defends aggressive 4th down calls in loss to Washington Three times on Saturday afternoon, the Oregon Ducks faced a fourth down and short-yardage situation. A conversion would have changed the game drastically, and in one case, ended the game completely. Three times, the Ducks failed to convert, and ultimately ended up losing, 36-33, to the Washington Huskies in a game that will go down as one of the best of the entire 2023 college football season. If even one of those conversions goes the other way — a “what if” that normally has a high success rate — then we’re likely having quite a different conversation at the moment. Instead, the Ducks’ suffered their first loss of the season, and head coach Dan Lanning is facing more criticism for his aggressive play-calling. On Monday night, I asked Lanning if the benefit of hindsight, and the ability to pour over the film since Saturday, had altered his opinion on the decisions made just days earlier. “If I knew that none of them were going to work, you’d change every situation, right?” Lanning said. “That’s not the way those decisions work. When you sit in this seat — I’m a big boy, I can handle criticism. And that’s going to come, and it’s deserved. In this position that’s the way it works. I trust our players, I trust our coaches, and when we have opportunities to win games, I’m going to be aggressive to win games.” Oregon Football: Dan Lanning defends aggressive 4th down calls in loss DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM ‘I can handle the criticism;’ Dan Lanning defends aggressive 4th down calls in loss to Washington
  17. Jahlil Florence able to practice Monday, Bryan Addison away from team for personal reasons Senior safety Bryan Addison is currently away from the Oregon football team, head coach Dan Lanning told reporters during his weekly Monday evening press conference. "He's taking a break for himself for personal reasons," Lanning said. "I won't discuss that beyond that." Now in his sixth year with the program, Addison has made 11 tackles this season. He also picked off Tyler Shough's final heave to seal the team's win at Texas Tech in early September. This development appears to be a recent one. Addison logged two full practices last Tuesday and Wednesday and made the trip with the team to Seattle. He did not play in the loss to Washington nor did he appear in the win at Stanford before the bye week. The 6-foot-5 safety has been among the team's better defensive backs on passing downs the past few seasons. He made 30 tackles in 2022 to go with two interceptions. Sophomore cornerback Jahlil Florence was able to practice on Monday, Lanning said. "It looks like he'll be fine," Lanning said. Florence has emerged as a starting corner opposite of Khyree Jackson during his second season of college football. He made three tackles in Saturday's loss and also picked off his first pass of the season in the final minute of the opening half. Both Jackson and Florence required medical assistance early in the third quarter on the same play. Jackson returned to action shortly after, but Florence was unable to return. 22. Ducks to host 5-star OT this weekend for Washington State game Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks are looking to make another big impact on the recruiting trail this weekend, hosting one of the top offensive tackles in the nation. On Monday, 5-star OT Jordan Seaton announced that he would be taking an official visit to Eugene this weekend for the Ducks’ game against the Washington State Cougars. Seaton is rated by 247Sports as the No. 26 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 2 OT. Seaton is also the top-rated uncommitted OT left on the board. This news comes just a couple of days after the Ducks landed their first 5-star of the 2024 cycle, getting a commitment from DL Aydin Breland just an hour before their game against the Washington Huskies. There now seems to be a good chance that the Ducks get into good standing with Seaton, who described Oregon has his “dream school” growing up...
