9 major questions for No. 8 Ducks to answer in showdown vs. No. 7 Washington We are just about midway through the 2023 college football season, and while we’ve learned a lot about who the Oregon Ducks are, and what Dan Lanning is making possible for his team thus far, there are still a ton of things that we still need to learn about this group. While Oregon is sitting with a 5-0 record for the first time since 2013 and a clear path towards the Pac-12 Championship Game and the College Football Playoff if their success continues down the road, the relatively easy schedule that they have traversed through the first half of the season has made it rather difficult to get a great read on this team. The offense looks great under Bo Nix, but they haven’t faced a defense that can be described as elite. The defense has been spectacular, led by Khyree Jackson and Evan Williams, but it’s safe to say that the Ducks haven’t seen an offense that is among the best in the nation. That certainly is going to change this week when Oregon goes up to Seattle to take on the No. 7 Washington Huskies. Michael Penix Jr. is leading the Heisman Trophy conversation at the moment, and the Huskies boast the No. 1 passing and No. 1 total offense in the nation. If Oregon’s defense is as good as we think it is, we will find out this week. There are a number of things that will be unveiled in the coming days when the Ducks and Huskies go into their first top-10 matchup in the history of the rivalry. Here are some things that we want to learn... Keys to Victory for the Oregon Ducks against the Washington Huskies We’re just a day away from the most important Oregon Ducks’ game in recent memory. On Saturday, The No. 8 Ducks will face off against the No. 7 Washington Huskies in Seattle. Last season, the Huskies upset the Ducks in Eugene 37-34, and on the road this weekend Oregon will look to exact revenge. The Ducks are 2.5-point underdogs in this game, which is about as close as betting lines get. This matchup will feature two of the best QBs and offenses in the country. Oregon should have the edge defensively, but overall, this is a pretty deadlocked matchup. In order for the Ducks to win this game, they will need to do a multitude of things, but below I’ve distilled the three things I think will be most important to an Oregon victory... Former Oregon Ducks’ star Justin Hollins re-signs with the Green Bay Packers Justin Hollins was unemployed for one day. The Green Bay Packers’ linebacker and former Oregon Ducks’ star was re-signed by the Packers, the team announced Tuesday. Hollins was released just hours before the Packers’ 17-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday. With starting running back Aaron Jones missing his third game in four weeks, the Packers added running back Patrick Taylor in time for the game. Hollins has played in 10 games for the Packers since the team claimed him after he was waived by the Los Angeles Rams in November. He signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Packers in March. Hollins has been on the field for 84 snaps on defense during the Packers’ first four weeks. In the world of college athletics, it’s not uncommon for some of the top universities in the nation to get caught up in an arms race. When the success of your program — no matter what sport it may be — depends on the level of talent on the team, and that talent depends on recruiting, then it makes sense that schools want to be at the forefront when it comes to flashy facilities. The Oregon Ducks golf programs just joined the race. On Thursday afternoon, the University of Oregon held a grand opening for the Peter and Jan Jacobsen Oregon Golf Teaching Facility, nicknamed The Jake. The facility is located just south of Eugene, at Emerald Valley Golf and Resort in Creswell. The facility now offers a home to the men’s and women’s golf teams at Oregon, both of which have seen unprecedented success over the past decade. It is fit with the latest in golf technology and resources in a weather-protected environment. The facility includes three oversized driving range bays with integrated TrackMan technology, an indoor putting studio, and a covered outdoor heated driving range. Media members were able to get a look inside the facility on Thursday morning, with a tour of the grounds and a walk-through of all the latest technology that is included inside the building. Here’s a look at what we saw... Four-Star DB Isaiah Rubin set to commit later this month The versatile defensive back impressed us over the weekend in a Griffin win and is set to make his college commitment next week. We saw Los Alamitos (Calif.) defensive back Isaiah Rubin in action over the weekend and he showed why he’s one of the region’s best and most versatile players. Los Al took down a pretty solid Newport Harbor team 62-14 last weekend and Rubin was one of the standout players of the night. On the second play of the game, he picked off a pass and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown and the Griffins never looked back. Rubin was matched up all night with Sailors standout receiver and Oregon commit Jordan Anderson and both players impressed. The two are actually cousins which made the head to head competition even more fun to watch... Bill Oram: With a win against Washington, Oregon Ducks can restore all that was lost last season You might call it the game to end all Oregon-Washington games, except that would be a little tone-deaf with all the Pac-12 matchups each week that actually represent the end of longstanding Pac-12 rivalries. So let’s just call it a big game, shall we? Rivalries are nothing without their histories and Ducks-Dawgs is rich with it. Kenny Wheaton! Joey Harrington! Marcus Mariota! Jimmy Lake! It’s all there. All that Back Then will transfer over to the Big Ten. But I don’t think you need to harken back to 1962, 1994 or even 2019 to feel the weight of Saturday’s matchup between the No. 8 Ducks and No. 7 Huskies... Evan Williams hopes defense will 'prove who we say we are' in Seattle this weekend Oregon defensive back Evan Williams has a lot of ties to this game even though it will be his first and last time playing in it. Saturday's top 10 matchup in Seattle provides an improved Oregon defense the chance to show just how far they've come. A year ago, Michael Penix Jr. rolled into town and threw for 408 yards to end Oregon's eight-game win streak. The loss exposed some personnel shortcomings and led Dan Lanning to aggressively retool the secondary this offseason. Through five games this year, no opposing passer has thrown for more than 282 yards and on average the Ducks have allowed the fifth fewest yards per game (153.6) through the air nationally. With the country tuned in for Saturday's nationally-televised game, this year's unit, which features five new defensive back starters, hopes to make a statement. "Not that we're not who we were last year, but that we're completely different," said safety Evan Williams. "We have a completely different set of capabilities and we're just looking to attack this opportunity. We know they're going to challenge our secondary a lot." Evan Williams hopes defense will 'prove who we say we are' in Seattle this weekend 247SPORTS.COM Oregon defensive back Evan Williams has a lot of ties to this game even though it will be his first and last time playing in it.

Ducks defense aiming for pressure against Huskies' standout offensive line With one of the best offensive lines in pass protection, Oregon's defensive front will have its hands full on Saturday. As Oregon and Washington saw in 2022, protecting your quarterback can become the ultimate difference-maker between winning and losing. Oregon's quarterback, Bo Nix, went down with an ankle injury in the second half of the Ducks loss, and the offense stalled late, helping give Washington the three-point upset victory. In 2022, Oregon did not register a single sack against Michael Penix Jr., Washington's quarterback, as the Huskies totaled 522 yards of offense, over 400 coming through the air. Fast forward to 2023, and both teams have done a tremendous job protecting their quarterback... Oregon vs. Washington Injury Report: Both Ducks and Huskies near full health for top-10 showdown Injuries are a subject some coaches bristle at where the media is concerned. Some coaches, such as Chip Kelly, just refuse to talk about them so asking is a complete waste of time. When it comes to Dan Lanning, his policy hasn’t been quite fleshed out yet. Some days he talks, but others he chooses to leave information close to the vest. For Washington Week, injuries were something he wanted to avoid talking about at all costs. Though Lanning may be participating in a bit of gamesmanship, it appears from what we can gather that the Ducks are close to fully healthy as a team heading into their sixth game of the season. Likewise, the Huskies are in the same boat, though there are a few more “questionable” players up in Seattle that we will be watching as kickoff draws near. All in all, it means we’re in for one heck of a contest Saturday afternoon in Seattle and there shouldn’t be any excuses afterwards. Here’s a look at the injury report that we’ve put together based on watching practice and talking to coaches this week... Mixed feelings from Oregon basketball coaches, players about Big Ten move: ‘It’s going to be complicated’ Kelly Graves views Oregon’s move to the Big Ten in 2024 with some excitement and trepidation. The 10th-year Ducks women’s basketball coach feels enthusiasm because it’s new, as do many of his players. The 2024-25 basketball season has more fresh challenges than any in decades for Oregon. Dana Altman sees the nonconference a bit differently. The 14th-year Oregon men’s coach said he’d prefer to heavily schedule West coast opponents. “I’m not interested in traveling all over the country playing games in nonconference now,” Altman said. Altman, 65, has mixed feelings about heading to the Big Ten. He says he’s “really excited” about the new challenge. He likens it to his move to Oregon after spending 16 years at Creighton. It’s different for a couple of reasons. Oregon Will be on ESPN GAMEDAY!
Pennsylvania Duck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
This Weekend's College GameDay Show Could Get Pretty Awkward This weekend, ESPN's College GameDay will be in Seattle for the Pac-12 showdown between Oregon and Washington. The Huskies are ranked seventh in the AP Poll, the Ducks eighth. The winner of the game will assume the role of favorite to win the Pac-12 title. However, all of those on-field story lines can't totally conceal the proverbial elephant in the room. Both Oregon and Washington are leaving the Pac-12 at the end of the school year for the Big Ten. Financial implications played a major role in both schools' decision to defect. ESPN, directly and indirectly, impacted the demise of the Pac-12 through television contracts, and since the network doesn't broadcast Big Ten games anymore, and Oregon and Washington are headed to that league, it could make for some awkward television on Saturday morning. In addition to these angles, Awful Announcing also touched on the recent tension between College GameDay's Pat McAfee and one of the Pac-12's fanbases. Our guess? ESPN's panelists are going to avoid touching these lightning rod topics at all costs. You can bet that people watching at home will be thinking about them during the show though.
