  1. Snap Count Takeaways: Biggest notes from Oregon's usage report in season-opener A lot of questions were answered in the Oregon Ducks season-opening win against the Portland State Vikings on Saturday, but one of the most valuable bits of information we get after Week 1 comes after the game. I am always excited to look at the usage report following the first contest of the year to get a sense of the snap counts that each player tallied during the matchup. With new faces across the roster, and a load of players getting onto the field, it finally gives us a great opportunity to look at who plays, what the depth chart might look like, and which guys are getting the biggest opportunities. We know the guys who started and played the most on Saturday in the 81-7 win over Portland State, but now we get to see how much some of the young guys played as well. Here are the snap counts for Week 1, and some major takeaways from the numbers... 2. Texas Tech vs. Wyoming score: Cowboys rally from three-score deficit to shock Texas Tech in double overtime Wyoming defeated Texas Tech in double overtime Saturday, 35-33, rallying from a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to stun the Red Raiders as two-touchdown underdogs at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming. In a game delayed by more than an hour prior to kickoff due to weather, the Cowboys found themselves down to their final breath in the second overtime series when quarterback Andrew Peasley connected with tight end John Michael Gyllenborg on a hot read for a touchdown. Wyoming then converted the 2-point conversion for the win. It was a wild ending to a game that was all Texas Tech early. The Red Raiders offense scored on its opening series of the night when quarterback Tyler Shough found wide receiver Myles Price for a 33-yard touchdown. They quickly doubled that lead to 14-0 with another touchdown following a fumble recovery that put the offense back on the field. Texas Tech later addend a field goal to exit the first quarter up 17-0 However, momentum seemingly shifted early in the second quarter after a Shough pass was intercepted by Wyoming defensive back Wrook Brown. Wyoming later tied the game at 17 on a 16-yard touchdown run by Sam Scott midway through the third quarter before taking a 20-17 lead on a field goal with just over six minutes into the fourth quarter. 4. Pac-12 Power Rankings: Deion Sanders and the Buffs make a leap after Week 1 Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes were the most prominent storing of the 2023 college football offseason. Since going to Boulder, Coach Prime overturned almost the entirety of his roster, bringing in transfers and sending players packing, and claiming that he was going to turn around a program that went 1-11 a year ago. Maybe we should have listened. 5. Column: Oregon's offense is elite, but Ducks' championship dreams hinge on defensive excellence The Oregon Ducks broke the program record for scoring on Saturday afternoon against the Portland State Vikings, putting up 50 points in the first half of an eventual 81-7 win. They tallied 729 yards of total offense, converted 38 first downs, saw eight different players score a TD, and watched just five passes fall incomplete between three different quarterbacks. Is anyone surprised? Personally, I wouldn’t say so. With QB Bo Nix returning for one final year, we knew that the ceiling would be high for this offense, despite the fact that OC Kenny Dillingham was being replaced by Will Stein. When you put returning weapons like Bucky Irving, Troy Franklin, and Terrance Ferguson around Nix, and throw in transfers Tez Johnson Traeshon Holden, and Gary Bryant, then you’ve got the makings of a deep and talented unit that could easily compete on a championship stage. The offense was never the question coming into this season — we always knew that the Ducks would be able to put up points at will. Whether or not the defense could keep points off of the board, though, is what Oregon’s championship dreams hinged on. Column: Ducks’ offense is elite, but Oregon’s D holds key to success DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Oregon’s offense was never going to be a problem in 2023. Can the defense play at an elite level? 6. Oregon's offense makes history plus other notes from the 81-7 win The victory Saturday afternoon over the Portland State Vikings presented more than a handful of interesting team and individual notes to pass along, including some history being made by the Oregon football program. Oregon's 81 points scored against the Vikings were the most in the modern era of Oregon Duck Football. The 74-point winning margin is also the most in the modern era, and it's the largest margin since a 97-point win over Willamette in 1916. Oregon's 50-point performance in the first half is tied for the fourth-most in any half by Oregon since 1996 and the most since scoring 52 in the first half against Oregon State in 2017. The 81-7 victory secured Oregon's 19th straight home opening win, and the Ducks are now 91-33-4 all-time in season openers, and 68-9-2 all-time at home in season openers. Oregon has moved to 6-0 all-time against the Portland State Vikings, outscoring the Vikings 370-47 in those six contests. Be sure to read all the notes. I found the info to be very interesting... 8. Photo Gallery: Ducks kick off 2023 season in style with 74-point beatdown For any Oregon Ducks fan who needed a scoring fix after a long offseason, they ought to be satisfied after Saturday afternoon’s performance from Dan Lanning and Co. In his first game as the Ducks’ offensive coordinator, Will Stein hung an 80-piece on the Portland State Vikings, breaking the school record for most points scored in a single game with 81. The offensive line was tremendous, the skill-position players were electric, and the defense was dominant after a couple of early miscues that let the Vikings on the board in the first quarter. Behind it all was a raucous Autzen Stadium that was just happy to see football being played in Eugene once again. The fans showed out, as expected, and it made for a great environment. Here are some of the best pictures from that environment on Saturday... 12. Ducks true freshmen contribute immediately to historic victory Oregon's 2023 season began with a bang on Saturday afternoon, as they set a new single-game record for points (81) and margin of victory (74) in their week one win over Portland State. As many predicted, the game was out of reach early, and the Ducks did not hesitate to put in true first-year students, holding on to their redshirt status in game one. The Ducks 2023 class ranked in the top 10, bringing 30 recruits to campus, including 19 four-star recruits and one five-star recruit. On Saturday, the Ducks played 24 members of that 2023 class, many of whom recorded stats and played most of the game. 13. True freshman tracker: Twenty-three frosh play in Oregon's season opener Winning a football game by 74 points provides a team a lot of benefits. Chief among them is the ability to empty benches and play the majority of the team's personnel. Saturday's 81-7 win over Portland State allowed the Ducks to play 81 total players, including 23 scholarship true freshmen. For the nearly two-dozen frosh who played, Saturday acted as their first collegiate action and moves them one step closer to the threshold to avoid redshirting. "What I did see today, and what I did see in the fall, is a group that wants to compete, and they understood that if they step on the field, they’re viewed no different than a starter,” head coach Dan Lanning said of the freshmen. “There’s a standard of excellence that we expect, and I think a lot of guys tried to perform to that level. The only way you’re gonna get better football is playing. "Some of those guys got out there, getting that early experience, those are gonna be guys we’re relying on later on the season. Some of those guys will be relying on every single game so it’s good for them to get some early opportunities out there in the field. We’ll see what they do with it going forward.” Check out who the freshmen were that played today... 14. Gary Bryant Jr. earns Ducks Wire Player of the Game honors There were upwards of 10 players who could have a case for player of the game in Oregon’s blowout win against Portland State, but today the award goes to Gary Bryant Jr. In his first game as a Duck, Bryant had 7 receptions for 100 yards and 2 TDs. 15. Oregon’s Mascot Had To Do 546 Push-Ups Because The Team Beat Portland State 81-7 The Oregon Duck has had to do a whole lot of push-ups over the years. In a tradition that has gone on for some time, the mascot has needed to do one push-up for every point the football team has after each score, and in games where the team really runs it up, it can get a bit out of hand. Well, the Ducks really let things get out of hand on Saturday evening. In the team’s season opener against Portland State, Oregon ran up the score en route to an emphatic, 81-7 win. That is the most points that the Ducks have scored in the modern era, and they’re the first team since 2015 to put up 80-plus in a game. The problem is that turns into a whole lot of push-ups. The official tally is 546, and we know this, because the Duck kept churning them out until the game came to its merciful end. 21. Instant Takeaways from Oregon's blowout win over Portland State The No. 15 ranked Oregon Ducks opened up their 2023 football season under second-year head coach Dan Lanning with a bang as they totaled over 600 yards of total offense, racked up over 80 points, and held the Vikings to fewer than 300 yards of total offense. In the end, the Ducks walked out of Autzzen Stadium with an impressive and dominating 81-7 victory to improve to 1-0 on the season. Bo Nix looked elite as he threw for multiple touchdowns, Troy Franklin caught two touchdowns of his own, and star running back Bucky Irving was electric in his limited touches. 22. Instant Reactions: Oregon breaks school scoring record in 81-7 win vs. Portland State It’s good to be back. While students aren’t back in school at UO yet, the stadium was plenty full today. Everyone loved “Shout” as always. And it was all capped off by an Oregon win. We knew this would be a blowout, but I didn't expect a blowout this large. In my predictions, I had a final score of 59-13. Needless to say, the Ducks exceeded expectations. The season will be long, and this definitely isn’t an outcome anyone should get accustomed to, but it is a fun and exciting way to kick off the 2023 season.
