2023 Season: Outlook, Projections, Opinions
Pennsylvania Duck replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
What Will It Take For Bo Nix To Win The Heisman? The buzz is already starting. A gigantic Bo Nix mural popped up a week ago in New York City and made the rounds on social media. But the University of Oregon’s athletic department had no intentions of stopping there, and an even bigger Bo Nix mural was just completed in Dallas. It would be easy to dismiss it all as a publicity stunt—the product of deep booster pockets and deeper complacency. And, well, it technically is a publicity stunt for Heisman voters, the media, recruits, etc. But the hype is real. And if Nix takes another leap, he could very well find himself in New York City in December, getting ready to accept the Heisman Trophy. So, what will it take for Nix to make it there? Let’s break it down. To access article, click here. -
Prospect Pulse: RB Jason Brown Jr. Nearing the Finish Line Jason Brown Jr. has the Ducks in his final three schools and has emerged as a priority target for Carlos Locklyn. Heading into the start of the 2023 college football season, Oregon's 2024 recruiting class is getting full. That means the staff will need to be selective with who they take commitments from moving forward. One player we know is high on Oregon's board is Seattle (Wash.) O'Dea running back Jason Brown Jr. He's next up on our new series "Prospect Pulse," where I weigh in on the schools in contention for a certain recruit and what I think of Oregon's chances. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound ballcarrier has cut his offer sheet featuring more than 20 schools down to just three. The Oregon Ducks, Michigan State Spartans and Washington Huskies will battle it out for the nation's No. 11 running back and the No. 2 recruit out of Washington (according to 247Sports). Update! ANOTHER Billboard AND Building for Bo?
Pennsylvania Duck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Forget the Heisman campaign; Bo Nix's billboards are about Oregon recruiting When a billboard went up in New York City last week featuring an image of Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix and the tagline ‘Bodacious,’ the college football world got to talking. A week later, when a similar billboard went up in Dallas, spreading Nix’s image to the south, the conversation continued. Not all of the rhetoric was positive, and a lot of individuals on social media questioned the motives behind what was perceived as an outdated marketing campaign for the Oregon QB’s Heisman Trophy campaign. Whether it was positive or negative, though, the Ducks were the talk of the town in the college football world for a large chunk of time leading up to the start of the 2023 season. I love a good documentary. So when I heard that the production crew that follows Coach Prime around signed a deal for an Amazon film series I got out the popcorn. Be sure, the documentary will make Deion Sanders look terrific. His sons, Shedeur and Shilo, will shine, too. So will two-way star Travis Hunter. Those three players have a NIL deal with SMAC Entertainment, the production company behind the project. Colorado University? It may have a problem. Many of you expressed disappointment in Coach Lanning's press conference after the last scrimmage, how he told you "nothing" and these conferences were a waste of time. It seems this article is written for you. Lanning many not have told you anything, but other coaches and players also had interviews in which they were asked about the scrimmage which told you a little more... Everything Oregon players and coaches said this week about last weekend's scrimmage The Ducks held their second of two fall scrimmages last weekend. Head coach Dan Lanning had little to say about the scrimmage in its aftermath, but Lanning and fellow coaches and players offered plenty of insights about it this past week. The Ducks held their second of two fall scrimmages inside Autzen Stadium last weekend. Details in its direct aftermath were limited, as head coach Dan Lanning shared little directly following its conclusion. "A lot of good work out there today; really physical, a lot to clean up," he said in his opening statement. "Defense really had a better hand probably for most of the day today. We're playing a real physical brand of ball. We weren't able to connect on a couple plays down the field and had a couple of costly takeaways... "Offense had some success in two minute there at the very end of the series and had some success in the red area. So some good back and forth towards the end. Overall, I think we'll be able towatch this and get a good idea where we're sitting at as a team." After a full film review, Lanning along with fellow coaches and players, offered further insights during this past week. ‘A car crash every play’: How Oregon football is growing its offensive line’s versatility Year-after-year, despite several coaching changes, the Oregon football team has established itself as one of the premier rushing offenses in the Pac-12. With that comes an offensive line that has been mostly dominant for years. Whether it was under Chip Kelly, Mark Helfrich, Mario Cristobal, or now head coach Dan Lanning, the standard has been set. Sixth-year senior Steven Jones, who has primarily practiced at right guard during fall camp, is one of the last remaining members of Oregon’s 2019 Rose Bowl-winning team. “A lot of people on that team was selfless,” Jones said. “Everyone did everything for the team, for the team, for the team. We had a culture at that time that forced everyone to uphold the standard for the team … they look to me to see what the standard is and how to go about the process of being a collegiate athlete. I take pride in that.” In 2023, the Ducks will have to replace just about every starter from its offensive line a year ago, but the expectations and standard for that group have not changed. “There’s a standard,” offensive line coach A’lique Terry said. “Other people are going to put pressure on us, but we have a standard of ourselves that we want to keep … as long as our standard is the same, we’re looking at it like we have a standard to upkeep. Then once we get to it, let's raise that bad baby.” ‘A car crash every play’: How Oregon football is growing its offensive line’s versatility WWW.REGISTERGUARD.COM The Ducks will have to replace just about every starter from its offensive line a year ago -

Five Takeaways: Bo Nix back for one reason, plus final thoughts from camp The hype in Eugene is real. Quarterback Bo Nix’s Heisman billboards going up across the country only strengthen it. Year 2 of the Dan Lanning/Nix era kicks off in a week and a half with Portland State coming down for the interstate opener. A lot of questions should be answered then. Who’s done enough to secure a starting spot? How will the offensive line settle in? Can new coordinator Will Stein’s offense transition seamlessly? Lanning and Nix both talked with media for the final time before gameday after practice Wednesday. Here are the five most significant takeaways... Dan Lanning, Bo Nix give early thoughts on Portland State matchup The Oregon Ducks football team officially starts to prepare for its season opener after an off-season that has seemed to last longer than usual. It’s not quite game week yet, but the Ducks are thinking about that season-opening game against Portland State. The Vikings are quite the contrast compared to last season’s opening opponent, the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs. The contest will be in Autzen, not Atlanta, and the Ducks will be overwhelming favorites. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning said that Oregon will not overlook its FCS opponent from the northern part of the state. Quarterback Bo Nix was asked about what success looks like when you play an opponent that you are expected to not only defeat but to defeat by a lot. Nix is already starting to sound like a coach. How Oregon Ducks are approaching kickoff, punt return in 2023 after dreadful 2022 For the past generation Oregon has been known for its dynamic special teams players, regularly ranking among the top 25 in punt and kickoff returns. It’s what makes last season’s dismal results all the more bizarre. The Ducks averaged just 18.81 yards per kickoff return, 90th nationally, and 4.92 yards per punt return, 106th of 131 FBS teams, marking the lowest results for the program since at least 1980. While some fans fret over valuable players like leading receiver Troy Franklin and top running back Bucky Irving possibly increasing their exposure to hits by playing on special teams, No. 15 Oregon can’t afford to repeat such dreadful results this season. Oregon has called upon some of its elite players in return roles in the past, including Jevon Holland, De’Anthony Thomas, LaMichael James and Kenyon Barner and an influx of talent at the skill positions gives UO more options in the return game. Bo Nix praises defensive improvements: 'I'm excited that they're our defense' Dan Lanning praised the caliber of play he saw from the team's defense moments after Saturday's scrimmage inside Autzen Stadium concluded. The scrimmage was closed to media and the general public alike, but according to quarterback Bo Nix, Lanning may have undersold just how dominant the defensive showing was. "That was polite of coach Lanning," he said of his coach's post-scrimmage assessments. "They look really good right now." Per Nix, the multitude of new pieces, Oregon added six portal players with starting experience this offseason, have fallen into place, and the result has been the type of defense that can leave offenses short on solutions. Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd suggested USC skip the Pac-12 Championship Game, if it could, late in the season. Yes, skip it in order to protect themselves to make the College Football Playoff. If USC is that good, why play for a conference title in a league where the Trojans are leaving anyway; Cowherd explained it like that on his show. In this scenario, USC is 11-1 with its lone loss coming to one of Oregon, Washington or UCLA at the end of the season. So at 11-1 on the season and potentially No. 3 in the country at the end of the year, Cowherd said no thanks to the Pac-12 Championship, if he were USC. “Here’s a story that may not happen but it’s fascinating to think about,” Cowherd said on The Herd Wednesday. “So USC is going to be very dynamic offensively between Caleb Williams and Lincoln Riley. Okay, so they’re gonna move up the rankings very fast. They’re going to score 60 points more than once. They’re going to curry a lot of favor when it comes to the College Football Playoff rankings and their schedule is tough. So I don’t think they’re gonna go undefeated. “My guess is (one of) Washington, Oregon, UCLA …. knock them off, but because they will have built up so much credibility … I think at the end of the year, there’s too many good games they’ll lose a game so they will be on the cusp of getting into the playoff with (the likes of) LSU, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan.” That’s where Cowherd proposed a scenario never done before in the modern era, at least to fulfill this plan. Which teams are most likely to join Oregon in the Big Ten down the road? Though it appears this round of conference realignment and expansion is over for the time being, I would be willing to put a lot of money on the notion that once next summer rolls around, we will once again be talking about which team is going where. In the world of college football, there has been so much movement over the past decade that it feels like nothing will stop until we eventually get two major 30-team conferences that look like the NFL rather than collegiate athletics. There is also the idea of college football adopting a relegation system, much like European soccer, which is starting to catch on with fans. Big Ten Expansion: Teams most likely to join Oregon Ducks in Big Ten DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM If the Big Ten were to further expand down the road, who might they go after? We’ve got a few ideas.
