  1. Freshman Iapani Laloulu impressing teammates and coaches While a starting role feels unlikely, a freshman offensive lineman is turning heads and drawing praise for his development since his arrival on campus. At media day in early July before the Oregon Ducks had even broken camp there was a buzz around an incoming true freshman that few people perhaps were expecting to generate the buzz. That player was 4-star offensive lineman Iapani Laloulu or Poncho as he is often called by his teammates. Senior defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus was the first player to bring up Poncho's potential and impressive skillset. He raved about the 6-foot-2, 325-pound offensive lineman's ability to move and how athletic despite his large frame. "He moves pretty good on the field, laterally, it's crazy," said Dorlus. "He does a good job. He's got a great future ahead of him." 2. Oregon OL Junior Angilau: 'I do feel like I'm back. I feel like I'm 100-percent, I'm ready' One of Oregon's new additions on the offensive line, Junior Angilau, feels ready for the 2023 season with coaching guidance from A'lique Terry. As two weeks separate Oregon from its week one opponent Portland State and the beginning of the 2023 season, there are still plenty of question marks regarding the team. After losing four of five offensive line starters from a season ago, the offensive line rotation and where players line up remains one of the biggest questions left. Oregon added through the transfer portal to alleviate some of the questions, bringing in talented transfers Nishad Strother (ECU), Ajani Cornelius (Rhode Island), and Junior Angilau (Texas). Angilau was one of the top transfer offensive linemen on the market, entering the college football pseudo-free agency as a multi-year interior starter for the Longhorns. Angilau suffered a season-ending injury in his final fall camp with Texas, not playing a single down in 2022. Because of the injury, Angilau was limited in spring camp with the Ducks, going through the motions and learning the new offense but rarely participating in full contact instances, including the 2023 Oregon spring game. Now, a year removed from the injury, Angilau is ready to dive in with his new team. Oregon OL Junior Angilau: 'I do feel like I'm back. 3. A'lique Terry provides O-Line status update two weeks before season opener Oregon offensive line coach A'lique Terry outlined where each of the team's O-Line competition stand two weeks before the team's first game against Portland State. Very little about last year's offensive line remains this year. For starters, A'lique Terry has replaced Adrian Klemm as the position coach, and four of last year's starters have moved on too. Because of that, the team enters Saturday's second and final scrimmage of fall with a lot of healthy competition but also with a lot of uncertainty of how the puzzle will ultimately fit together. Terry spoke with media on Friday evening, providing updates on where things stand across the O-Line. 4. A'lique Terry updates competition for Ducks' starting center position Taking over for someone with the stature and pedigree of Alex Forsyth is no easy task. After spending several years at Oregon and acting as one of the most consistent pieces on the offensive line, checking in and out of coverages with ease and keeping one of the nation’s best offensive lines together in 2022, Forsyth’s departure to the NFL certainly leaves a hole behind him. Now it is up to someone on Oregon’s roster to fill that void going into 2023. There are a number of players competing for the starting spot at center under new OL coach A’lique Terry, and going into the third week of fall camp, the competition is starting to reach a head. “Right now, we’ve still got a solid competition,” Terry said after practice on Friday. “We’ve got Jackson Powers-Johnson in there. We’ve got Marcus [Harper] in there. We’ve got Iapani Laloulu. Charlie Pickard and Kanen Rossi. We’ve got five guys right now who are all doing a tremendous job.” In the spring, it was viewed as a competition mainly between Powers-Johnson and Harper. However, Terry says that the other guys on the depth chart have done a great job of upping the level of competition and pushing those guys at the top. 5. Oregon OL coach A'lique Terry details NFL lessons from Justin Jefferson, Kirk Cousins One of the most valuable and underrated facets of the coaching staff that Dan Lanning has built with the Oregon Ducks is that a lot of the members have NFL experience. Former offensive line coach Adrian Klemm won Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and spent time coaching most recently with the Pittsburgh Steelers before coming to Eugene. Defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi was with the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to accepting the job at Oregon. Most recently, after Klemm left Eugene to go back to the NFL, landing a gig with the New England Patriots, Lanning brought in another coach from the NFL ranks — this time A’lique Terry, a former defensive line coach with the Minnesota Vikings. While Terry most recently spent time coaching defense, he has a long history of coaching offensive linemen, which started with the Ducks as a graduate assist for Mario Cristobal. Terry talked to media members on Friday and said that his time spent with the Vikings was incredibly valuable, if for no other reason than he got to see how NFL stars prepare and work hard to perfect their craft. 7. LB Jamal Hill making further adjustments at linebacker as season approaches Oregon's Jamal Hill is in his second camp in his new position, linebacker, and is continuing to adjust but finding bright moments. Jamal Hill hasn't played linebacker long. The move was officially announced in spring camp 2023, and the physical announcement has been noticeable. Moving from safety, Hill has put on a few pounds to carry the physical burden. Hill, listed at 226 pounds, is "still getting used to" moving around with the new weight, but after weeks and weeks of practicing and repping at linebacker, there is a downside he didn't see coming: Offensive linemen stepping on your toes. "I don't know, in my opinion, it's got some similarities. Like hit them before they hit you," said Hill regarding his approach to attacking C and D gaps. "The biggest change is you have to be ready to get your toes stepped on. They're 300 pounds, and when they step on your toes, it hurts." 11. Oregon Football Fall Camp Updates: Practice No. 13 The Ducks were in shells on Friday afternoon for their final workout prior to Saturday's scrimmage inside Autzen Stadium. Out of full pads and with a competition date less than 24 hours away, contact was far from a premium. Media, which watched about 20 minutes, took in a different selection of drills, including a basketball-style box out drill among the team's linebackers, defensive backs, running backs and wideouts, along with a new variety of individual and positional drills. 12. Oregon Has One of Nation's Best Quarterback Hauls in 2024 Recruiting Class Everyone knows that quarterback is the most important position in college football. That's why coaching staffs across the country place a premium on recruiting talented arms to lead their offenses of the future. Fortunately for Oregon, offensive coordinator Will Stein has helped the Ducks reel in one of the nations best hauls at the position in the 2024 class. Rivals ranks Oregon's quarterback class No. 2 in the country, trailing only the Georgia Bulldogs. To access this Max Torres article, click here.
  13. Oregon Ducks fall camp practice observations: Several linemen remain out, Kyler Kasper returns Several Oregon linemen remain absent from practice and a receiver returned to the field. Center Jackson Powers-Johnson, offensive tackle Michael Wooten, defensive linemen Brandon Dorlus, Kenyon Ware-Hudson and Tevita Pome’e and edge defender Teitum Tuioti remained out from Oregon’s 13th practice of fall camp Friday afternoon at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. They were each out on Wednesday and Ware-Hudson and Wooten have been out for a week. Receiver Josh Delgado also remains absent. Receiver Kyler Kasper returned to practice after being out on Wednesday. The early periods of practice were considerably lighter than midweek, as is typically the case on Friday practices before a scrimmage. 14. Most intriguing Oregon position battles midway through fall camp The Oregon Ducks are just 16 days away from their season opener with Portland State at Autzen Stadium. With a dozen fall practices in the books, we’ve learned plenty about the 2023 iteration of Dan Lanning’s squad. While Oregon does not typically release public depth charts, it’s apparent that frontrunners are beginning to emerge for starting jobs at a few key positions. Ahead of the Ducks’ 13th fall practice, here are three seemingly unresolved position battles to keep tabs on throughout the remainder of August. 15. Chris Hill isn’t surprised that football consumes all the oxygen in the room when it comes to expansion talk. The former University of Utah athletic director knows where the money is buried in college athletics. That said, isn’t it time someone in the Pac-12 Conference spoke up on behalf of the 5,000 athletes who play non-revenue generating sports? Is it even safe to do so? “Good Gosh bless Chip Kelly,” Hill told me. “He did what was right. He made people think.” UCLA’s football coach saw the conference splintering and wondered why football was dragging all the other campus sports along for the ride. Kelly said: “Our sport is different than everybody else — we only play once a week, travel’s not a big deal for football, but it is a big deal in other sports.” Canzano: 'Good Gosh bless Chip Kelly' -- but do the Pac-12 presidents care? 16. Jordan Burch getting comfortable in new environment and scheme Oregon defensive lineman Jordan Burch has transferred across the country this offseason. He's gaining comfort in his new surroundings. While Dan Lanning's offseason theme centered around taking the step from good to great, South Carolina transfer Jordan Burch was offered a different challenge: going from home to a fresh slate. Heading west has certainly brought on change. The former five-star prep recruit grew up in the same city he played his college ball at in Columbia (S.C.). In moving thousands of miles away, he's been forced to embrace the newness. "Just learning new things," he said of his offseason. "I guess you could say in any part of life. I think I'm catching on pretty good to with adapting to a new environment." Now out of his comfort zone across the country, Burch say he finds solace in frequent calls back home to family. 17. Hayward Field to host U20 World Championships in 2026 Eugene’s reputation as an international citadel of athletics grew again on Monday, as the World Athletic Association selected Eugene to host the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field. The facility, which has hosted events such as the United States Olympic Trials to NCAA Championships and IAAF World Junior Championships, completed a $200 million renovation in 2022 that saw new facilities added and improved with the goal of bringing international events to the city. At the meeting, council President Sebastian Coe highlighted the appeal of bringing the competition across the globe saying, “We are grateful that so many around the world are interesting in hosting our events and we’re delighted with the quality of candidates we have had to choose from to host these World Athletic Championships over the next three years”. The World Athletic Championships facilitate one of the highest levels of competition for track and field across the globe. With history dating back to 1983, the WAC was privy to world record holders across various events, including Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and British distance runner Mo Farah. In 2026, it’ll invite Olympic-level athletes aged 20 and under to the University of Oregon campus as the competition hosts its biennial series. To access the Daily Emerald article, click here.
  18. A Healthy Popo Aumave Will be Crucial to Oregon's Revamped Pass Rush in 2023 It's no secret that Oregon's defense struggled to get after the quarterback in 2022. Game after game the opposing quarterback either had ample time to throw, or would extend plays outside the pocket, leading to sustained drives and ultimately more points on the board. The absence of a consistent pass rush surely wasn't for a lack of talent. The Ducks had an NFL Draft pick in outside linebacker DJ Johnson and Part of the problem was a majority of that pressure coming from the edges. Heading into the 2023 season, Dan Lanning and Tony Tuioti have a wealth of experience to work with along the interior of the defensive line. One of the more valuable pieces will surely be senior defensive tackle Popo Aumavae, a first-team AP All-Conference selection in 2021. To access the article, click here.

  20. Oregon saw instant impact potential in Ole Miss transfer Casey Kelly When Oregon saw tight end Moliki Matavao and Cam McMormick leave the program after the 2022 season for more playing time elsewhere, the Ducks knew they needed to add depth and reload the talent at the tight end position. Oregon signed high school athlete Kenyon Sadiq out of the state of Idaho and then in the spring the Ducks found a natural fit in Ole Miss transfer Casey Kelly. Oregon tight end coach Drew Mehringer said he knew of Kelly and his availability, but also that he needed to do his homework on adding the junior. So Mehringer naturally went to two people already with the program that have coached or played with Kelly previously at Ole Miss.
