  1. Options dwindling as California, Stanford, Oregon State, Washington State prepare to take financial hits No matter how this round of realignment plays out, the remaining Pac-12 teams will be losing money. In many ways, this upcoming round of conference realignment is more uncertain than the last one. At least last time -- all the way back to earlier this month -- we knew the participants, where the money was going and who was throwing it around. Consider this rarity as the four remaining Pac-12 schools try to figure out where they'll be playing in 2024: The priority for California, Stanford, Oregon State and Washington State -- at the moment -- isn't money. In fact, for perhaps the first time in realignment, Power Five schools are assured of losing money by changing conferences. That's a function of the Pac-12 all but dissolving and the remaining Pac-4 having limited options. The priority now is finding a conference to call home in 2024. Clearly, Oregon State and Washington State have little value -- at least compared to the $21 million they are set to earn in the last year of the Pac-12 contract. It's almost assured they won't match that sum no matter where they end up. 2. Oregon Ducks Defensive Back Nikko Reed Working at Nickel in Fall Camp Heading into the 2023 season, Oregon's defense will be under a microscope. After all, many believe the unit largely under-achieved in 2022, despite featuring multiple NFL Draft picks like Christian Gonzalez (Rd. 1, pick 17), DJ Johnson (Rd. 3, pick 80) and Noah Sewell (Rd. 5, pick 148). One of the main areas Dan Lanning is looking to improve is in the secondary. After losing pieces like Bennett Williams to graduation, he's getting creative and moving players around. Nikko Reed is an early example of that in fall camp. On Monday, the Colorado cornerback transfer revealed that he's learning a new position with the Ducks. "I've been switching from corner to the nickel back," Reed said of where he's improved the most. "Just learning that, is a big improvement for me because I've only been learning corner for two years of college. Moving closer to the ball is an improvement for me because I never thought that I'd be able to do that." To access the article, click here.
  3. Oregon CB coach Demetrice Martin 'pretty proud' of how son Cole Martin has attacked fall Oregon's coaching staff features more than a few proud fathers, but for defensive assistant coaches Tony Tuioti and Demetrice Martin their pride comes from sources within the football program. Martin couldn't help but beam on Monday when discussing his son Cole Martin, freshman defensive back, and his approach during his first fall camp. Just like Tony Tuioti and his son, freshman outside linebacker Teitum Tuioti, Martin doesn't act as his son's position coach. "I'm pretty proud of him from watching from outside of my room working with the stars and the safety with coach [Chris] Hampton," Martin said following the team's 10th fall practice. "Playing safety at the end of his senior year in high school was new to him. They just kind of stuck him in the middle of the field and said see ball, get ball. That type of thing. Now he has a lot more run fits and pass responsibilities that he's learning but he's picking it up." The younger Martin turned heads in the spring game with a slew of impressive plays. He was credited with three tackles and one pass break up. 4. Demetrice Martin details how the secondary has improved since last season It's no secret that Oregon's defense struggled against the pass last season. Whether it was a lack of personnel, lack of a pass rush, inconsistencies with the defense, or bad communication, problems were afoot. As 2022 became 2023, Oregon made it a mission to add to its secondary. The Ducks landed a trio of Khyree Jackson, Tysheem Johnson, and Evan Williams to start before adding Nikko Reed in the transfer portal. After that, Oregon landed multiple highly regarded four-star recruits in Rodrick Pleasant, Daylen Austin, and Cole Martin. These additions came to a room that already featured impact players like Trikweze Bridges, Jahlil Florence, and Dontae Manning. The move of acquiring moldable talent still hasn't taken the field for a regular season game, but it seems to be paying dividends during practices and scrimmages as of now. 5. On Aug. 30 in Dallas, leaders of the College Football Playoff were scheduled to finalize minutiae of the expanded postseason format set to begin in 2024. Items on the agenda included things like ticket distribution, team lodging and other important but tedious matters around the first-round games on campus. Now, after another realignment wave shook the college sports landscape, the meeting is expected to take a different tone. The CFP’s governance structure, revenue distribution model and, most notably, playoff format are all up for re-examination after last week’s realignment shift, several college leaders say. After Pac-12's implosion, College Football Playoff format set for another shakeup SPORTS.YAHOO.COM While many commissioners expect and understand that more changes are coming to the CFP structure, some are against...
  6. Junior OL Maki Stewart is hearing from schools coast to coast since August 1st Los Alamitos’ (Calif.) junior offensive lineman Maki Stewart looks primed for a big season. We had a chance to see Stewart in action over the weekend when the Griffins took on Gardena (Calif.) Serra in a scrimmage. Stewart worked out at left tackle and was really impressive, showing why he’s already a national recruit. Stewart had a strong sophomore season for the Griffins but transferred briefly to Mission Hills (Calif.) Alemany in the off-season. He’s now back at Los Al and is part of what should be one of the state’s top offensive lines. Stewart played both guard and tackle last season and shows the ability to play either spot at the college level as well. At 6-4.5, 285 pounds with an 80”+ wingspan, he has definite some tackle traits and that’s definitely where he wants to play at the next level as well. On the recruiting front, Stewart has heard from a host of schools since the August 1st contact period started up. 7. Overrated/Underrated: Pac-12 Edition We move oh so dangerously close (r) to the start of the college football season today. One of the next great signals is the debut of the preseason AP Top 25 released earlier today. Last week the USA Today coaches poll was released. While I personally don’t have a vote, which is really a detriment to the polls, I do have opinions on where some of these teams are being ranked. So I’ll just write about it here. Let’s start with a look at the Pac-12 teams ranked in the two major polls and whether I think they are underrated or overrated. 8. Kirk Herbstreit Hints At More Realignment Coming To College Football The wheels of realignment in college football continue to turn. This upcoming season is going to be the last one until USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington join the Big Ten next year. It's also going to be the last one until Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah join the Big 12 in 2024. Kirk Herbstreit, who is an analyst on College GameDay, thinks this is just the beginning. He expects more realignment in the future. To access the article, click here.
  9. Demetrice Martin describes where defense has most improved since 2022 A year ago, the Oregon Ducks had a offense that was as good as any in the nation, but a defense that at times struggled to hang with the best teams in the Pac-12. Whether it was missed assignments or blown coverages, the defensive secondary often received ridicule for their play down the stretch. The Ducks finished the year with the No. 106 passing defense in the nation, with a third-down conversion rate that ranked No. 126 in the nation. While a lot of that had to do with the lack of a pass rush applying pressure to the QB, the secondary also shares some of the blame with subpar coverage. Going into 2023, though, the defensive secondary is hoping to have a stronger start to the year, and cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin says that the driving factor in their success so far has been connection and communication. 13. Khamari Terrell aiming to 'take over the STAR spot' in second season Cornerback Khamari Terrell hopes to go from special teams star to defensive starter as a sophomore this fall. Sophomore defensive back Khamari Terrell used special teams as his platform to make an impact a year ago. He's shooting for more in season two. "Last year it took it me a while to learn the defense, so as I was learning the plays I tried to make a big impact on special teams. This year I'm trying to take over the STAR spot," he said after Friday's practice. Terrell was one of six freshmen to avoid redshirting a season ago, playing 148 total snaps over 10 appearances. More than 100 of those snaps came on special teams with just 43 taking place on defense. He finished with eight total tackles. Listed at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds a year ago, Terrell's build does not match the STAR prototype. More compactly built players often thrive there, as they're better suited to excel in run support. What does he bring to the table that makes him a good fit for STAR? 15. AP Top 25 Poll reactions: Alabama, Tennessee overrated, Oregon underrated in preseason rankings This might come as shocking news, but the two-time reigning national champion Georgia was voted No. 1 in the preseason AP Top 25, which was released Monday. The Bulldogs received 60 of 63 first-place votes and 1,572 overall points in the poll of record in college football. The Michigan Wolverines, fresh off of their second-straight College Football Playoff appearance, chimed in at No. 2. They received 1,490 overall points and two first-place votes. Rival Ohio State garnered the other first place vote and came in at No. 3. Alabama and LSU rounded out the top five, respectively. USC, Penn State, Florida State, Clemson and Washington made up the rest of the the top 10. The SEC landed the most teams in the poll with six teams. The Pac-12 and Big Ten close behind with five. The release of the AP Top 25 always sparks conversation. The poll either confirms or contradicts narratives that have dominated the offseason, and gets fans across the country ready for Week 1 matchups that should set the landscape for a three-month sprint to the CFP. 19. Duck target WR Jeremiah McClellan to Ohio State The Oregon Ducks fought hard to get 4-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan to join the already impressive 2024 class in Eugene, but they were ultimately unable to land him in the end. McClellan, the No. 91 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 17 WR, announced on Sunday afternoon that he would be committing to the Ohio State Buckeyes over the Ducks and Missouri Tigers. Earlier this summer, McClellan took an official visit to Eugene and was reportedly very high on the Ducks. Over the past week, a long list of Oregon commits went on a social media blitz, trying hard to publicly recruit McLellan to become a Duck. Oregon’s 2024 class is still looking very solid at the WR position, led by 4-star Jordan Anderson (No. 144 overall, No. 22 WR) leading the way. Adding McClellan would have been a great bonus, though. 20. MBB: Hooping in the Big 10 What can Oregon expect once it starts hitting the hardwood in its new conference? Just in case you haven’t heard…Oregon is moving to the Big 10!!! Okay, perhaps there was a hint of sarcasm there, but give me a break, it’s still the summer doldrums here at ATQ. Understandably, the primary focus has been on football and how that will look, but if you’ve ever read my content, you know I’ll never shut up about basketball. For the 2024 season, the Ducks look like a solid contender for the final season of the Pac 12, but beyond that, what are we looking at? Well, recruits will sign where they will, transfers will find their place in the portal, so it’s hard to tell what kind of rosters we’ll be subject to. All we can really do is look back and guess. So here goes... MBB: Hooping in the Big 10 WWW.ADDICTEDTOQUACK.COM What can Oregon expect once it starts hitting the hardwood in its new conference?

  22. Oregon football running backs: Bucky Irving commands spotlight following breakout season Whatever anonymity Bucky Irving had when his 2022 season began a year ago is long gone. During Oregon’s preseason media day on July 31, Irving found himself sitting at a small table and surrounded by cameras, recorders and reporters peppering him with questions. The junior running back, never one to embrace the spotlight, handled the attention with ease. “It’s nothing I really look into,” Irving said. “I just want to be the best teammate I can be and just trying to focus on what I can do to help this team win football games. I don’t really care about the cameras or any of that type of stuff. I’m just trying to be a good teammate.” After a season in which he started 12 of 13 games and rushed for 1,058 yards on 156 carries with five touchdowns, Irving has become one of the faces of the Oregon program. In the preseason media poll released last month, Irving was a first-team all-Pac-12 selection, and last week he was named to the preseason watch lists for the Doak Walker Award, given to the nation’s top running back, and the Walter Camp Player of the Year.
