  1. NCAA CONFERENCE CHAOS LEAVES MOST FANS UNFAZED: SPORTICO/HARRIS POLL With the latest convulsions of college conference realignment having pushed the Pac-12 to the verge of death—and stranding programs like Cal and Stanford—Americans’ response is a collective shrug. A survey conducted this month by Sportico and The Harris Poll, in the immediate wake of Oregon’s and Washington’s decision to ditch the Pac-12 for the Big Ten in 2024, found that 55% of U.S. adults familiar with conference realignment did not feel as if it had impacted their enjoyment of college sports. Indeed, more members of that cohort (26%) said that conference realignment had actually enhanced their enjoyment, as compared to 18% who felt it had diminished it. 3. Oregon's defense building its habits to develop into a defense that is feared ahead of 2023 season The Oregon Duck defense knows they need to be better and just before fall camp is over we've learned about the progress the Ducks have made and what habits they are trying to build up. In early August Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi spoke with the media following the team's second practice. He stepped forward and challenged his defense to be better in 2023 than they were in 2022. "We want to be a defense that is respected and feared," Lupoi said early into fall camp. "The only way we get there is in the body of work every single day out here. We have a lot of things we're focused on to improve and a lot of things we need to get better at." Lupoi said the Ducks needed to get better on third-down defense and pass defense. He referenced stopping the short passes under the defense that hurt Oregon last year, while also highlighting Oregon's need to improve in the way the Ducks attack and tackle in space. "We just want to improve at everything. I would love to improve our aggression, absolutely," he said. 14 practices later, two scrimmages later, and the final days of fall camp in front of the Ducks, where has this defense improved? 4. Transfer DB's Tysheem Johnson and Evan Williams developing on-field chemistry Oregon's retooled secondary could feature as many as four starters added through the transfer portal this offseason. Among those players are safeties Evan Williams and Tysheem Johnson. While both acknowledge that learning a new defense has been a challenge, the chemistry the two have developed together on the field has come relatively easily. Per Johnson, it's only grown during fall camp since they've begun sharing time together at the back-end of the defense. "When we first started we weren't as together as much," he said. "Once they put us together and we started playing, we've created a bond and it's like we're glued together. 6. Pac-12 collapse: WSU president suggests Fox’s strategy fueled Big Ten’s raid of Oregon, Washington One of the Pac-12′s longtime media partners had strategic reasons for taking the step that decimated the conference, according to a university president with knowledge of the media rights negotiations. Washington State’s Kirk Schulz, chair of the Pac-12 board of directors, suggested late last week that Fox might have lured Washington and Oregon into the Big Ten in order to prevent the Pac-12 from signing an agreement with Apple. “We’ve got just a couple networks that are making the real decisions about who goes where based on the dollars they want to put into it,” Schulz said during a conversation published on the university’s YouTube channel. “I do think if I was Fox and ESPN, I’m not sure I want Apple in the marketplace, frankly. I don’t want somebody with pockets that are that deep as a rival if I can afford it.” Pac-12 collapse: WSU president suggests Fox’s strategy fueled Big Ten’s raid of Oregon, Washington WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM Washington State’s Kirk Schulz suggested that Fox might have lured Oregon and Washington into the Big Ten in order to prevent...

  12. Oregon Football Fall Camp Updates: Practice No. 16 Oregon's 16th practice of the spring took place on Tuesday, here are updates from the day... The Ducks have returned to a morning practice routine this week which will align more closely with the team's in-season schedule. Under clear skies, and thankfully improved air quality, the team was in shells on Tuesday for the second workout of the week. The day did bring the return of senior defensive lineman Brandon Dorlus. Dorlus, who had also been ID'ed leaving Monday's workout, had missed both of last week's sessions open to media. He was in trainers and not cleats and was not a full participant drills media took in on Tuesday. Continue in article for today's activities... 13. Conference realignment will mean longer trips and greater costs for traveling college football fans A one-way flight involving Oregon and Rutgers in the new Big Ten is 2,900 miles and slightly less for schools like Southern Cal, UCLA or Washington. That's more than five hours on a plane. In seven decades of following West Virginia football, little has gotten in the way when Terry Keenan wants to see his beloved Mountaineers. Conference realignment promises to be a headache. College sports and the traveling fan are on course for a big reset in 2024. TV money has lured Southern Cal, UCLA, Oregon and Washington to the Big Ten. Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah will join the growing Big 12. And Oklahoma and Texas will head to the Southeastern Conference. Although a few regional rivalries have been created or preserved, longer trips will be the norm. How long? A one-way flight involving Oregon and Rutgers in the new Big Ten is 2,900 miles (4,667 kilometers) and slightly less for schools like Southern Cal, UCLA or Washington. That's more than five hours on a plane. Time will tell whether football fans will embrace this new concept, or whether realignment will put a dagger into the heart of the road warrior for games that aren't marquee matchups. For every chance for a new Big Ten school to play at Ohio State, there will be trips such as Utah playing UCF in Orlando, Florida, or Arizona State traveling to Morgantown, West Virginia. 14. ESPN identifies best, worst case scenarios for Oregon in 2023 Oregon is one of those teams out west that has big-time aspirations in 2023. Even so, are the Ducks good enough to win the race in the Pac-12, and maybe more? Or are they destined to only be just another one of the better teams in the league this fall? ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti examined the best and worst-case scenarios for Oregon’s upcoming campaign in an article last week. Based on the program’s personnel, head coach, and lineup of their schedule, he doesn’t see many reasons to think that the Ducks can’t win the Pac-12 in their final year in the league and make their second-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff. 15. Oregon looking to load up its depth at receiver as season gets closer How many receivers does Oregon plan to play? Where does Kris Hutson fit in? Oregon's coaching staff chimes in. The Oregon offense in 2023 is expected to be one of the Pac-12's best this coming season, and a big reason for that is the talent they've been able to accumulate at wide receiver. With Troy Franklin and Kris Hutson back as starters from last year combined with Alabama transfer Traeshon Holden, Troy transfer Tez Johnson, and USC transfer Gary Bryant Jr., the Ducks have a wide receiver room full of experience and production. This then leads to the question of how many players at the receiver positions does Offensive Coordinator Will Stein expect his offense to use? "It varies," said Stein. Every team I've been on has played, you know, five, maybe six guys just depends. You have your nucleus of dudes that are gonna play the majority of the snaps but I mean kind of common sense overrides all rules." 17. 'We can roll eight-deep;' Oregon OC Will Stein discusses offensive line depth One of the primary things to watch throughout fall camp and early in the season for the Oregon Ducks is the offensive line play. After a stellar 2022 season that saw one of the nation’s best offensive lines deployed in Eugene, there will be a changing of the guard in 2023. Four of the five starters from last year’s unit have graduated from the program, and while there is a lot of talent to replace them, the cohesion will need to be smoothed out early in the season. After Oregon’s 15th fall practice on Monday, offensive coordinator Will Stein was asked about that cohesion and the depth at the position in particular. What he had to say should be encouraging to Duck fans: “I think we can roll eight deep, I really do,” Stein said. While fans may be mostly concerned about the first five guys who will take the field up front, Stein’s confidence in the depth at OL is great to hear. With so much physicality in the trenches, it is rare that you make it through a season relying on only five linemen, so being able to go to as many as eight guys should keep the team rocking and rolling on the front line, especially at the start of the season. Oregon Football: Ducks OC Will Stein discusses offensive line depth DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM “I feel good about our depth. A lot of guys have played and there’s been some newcomers come on that we’re excited about.”
  18. LOOK: Another billboard for Oregon QB Bo Nix is going up in Dallas Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix is making his way across the United States. A week after the news came out that the Heisman Trophy candidate had a billboard going up in downtown New York City to launch his campaign ahead of the 2023 season, it’s become clear that another billboard is going up, this time in Dallas, Texas. The NYC billboard features a pictures of Nix’s back with the words ‘Bodacious’ above him — the BO in massive letters. In Dallas, it appears that we will get a different look, with Nix appearing to throw towards the viewer. The Dallas billboard appears to be across two buildings, instead of just one. I think the picture being used is the one at the beginning of the article... 19. Steven Jones and Junior Angilau have earned each other's respect through position battle Either Steven Jones or Junior Angilau is expected to open the 2023 season as Oregon's starting right guard. The pair have become good friends in a short period of time. It's expected that either Steven Jones and Junior Angilau will start at right guard when Oregon opens its season next month. A year ago Jones began the season starting in that spot, and closed there too despite missing most of the weeks in between with injury. Angilau was brought in from Texas to challenge Jones and other interior linemen. He too suffered a serious injury a year ago. His cost him the entire 2022 season after being the projected Longhorn right guard starter. 20. Oregon OC Will Stein provides insight on what benchmarks make a successful offense What makes a successful offense in football? It's a simple yet complicated answer. There are the obvious talking points of how many points a game does your team score, yards per game, yards per play, and many more benchmarks. Making your offense click is your livelihood for an offensive coordinator, so relying on rudimentary measures isn't exactly something to hold your hat on. For Oregon's offensive coordinator, Will Stein, there are three pillars to his madness: explosive plays, broken tackles, and turnover margin. Those three pillars stick with the Ducks' offense and Stein's philosophy of the team. Two are counting stats in explosive plays and turnover margin. Those require a definition and, potentially, an equation to solve it. On the other hand, broken tackles can be counted, but the rules are not as strict. Oregon OC Will Stein provides insight on what benchmarks make a successful offense 247SPORTS.COM Oregon OC Will Stein detailed what specific benchmarks he and his offense have as goals to reach this season.
