  1. Here’s the rub IMO. Johnson is NOT a 1 and done player.  Guys that are 1 and done don’t shoot 34% from three in HS.  They also don’t have long stretches where they struggle against HS competition and miss out on all star / all American games.

Dior is a great player and he would have been a great addition to our roster.  But the fact that Altman went out and signed 2 JC guards and 2 more power 5 transfer guards tells you all that you need to know.  He wasn’t 100% confident that Dior was going to be able to be the man next year.  And I agree.

Also, if Dior really believed he was even in the ballpark of being NBA ready, he wouldn’t be scared of a little competition with Will and Keeshawn.

I am not in the “we didn’t want him anyway” club.  But I am certainly in the “Will >>> Dior” club. If keeping Will caused us to lose Dior, then so be it.

It will be interesting to see how Johnson does at Memphis next year.

  2. Is he still a 5*?  I thought he was a 4* now.
Anyways, that is a bummer to lose a good recruit, but with Will coming back and the guards we signed in the transfer portal, I am guessing he saw the handwriting on the wall and his minutes were going to be somewhat limited next year.

  3. I am not as worried about the completion percentage.  Just for reference, Joey was at 55% and Akili was at 56% for their careers at Oregon.

They key is that both of those guys made huge plays and made them when it counted most.  I can live with Nix's 61% if he is a gamer and is chucking the ball downfield and creating explosion plays.

  4. Great list!  If I had to pick 5 players, there is no way that Rid is not on that list.

He could have potentially broken 2,000 points had he stayed for his senior year and we made a run in the tourney.  And at 150+ assist a year, he probably would have ended up first on that list too.

  5. The biggest head scratcher was Kenny Wooten.  That dude was so athletic and a good defender.  If he would have stayed, I wonder if he would have developed a jumper and earned a spot somewhere.

And speaking of head scratchers, what ever happened to Addison Patterson?  He was playing really well for the Ducks late in the season, and was in line to start or take on a big roll with the team as a sophomore.  Then one practice into is sophomore year, he just pulls the plug and transfers to Nevada, forcing him to sit out for the season.  Then, before he ever suits up for a game, he is gone from Nevada.  Finally, he transfers to Salt Lake City Community College in August 2021; however, he is not on their official roster and there are no stats to be found.  It is like he just disappeared.  I still believe that kid had NBA potential.

  6. He didn't just disappear.  I believe he tweaked his leg/ankle at one point.  Then he smacked his head hard in the AZ game and was held out. Then 2 games later, at USC, he hits his head again and gets stitches.  We also know that came down with Mono sometime February.

Dude was seriously banged up and sick.  He was playing at a VERY HIGH level before all that happened...shooting 57% from the floor and 50% from three in the previous 8 conference games before all that happened.  He was KILLING IT.

If he can stay healthy, he is the type of player that can win us a conference title and help his team make a deep run in the tournament.

  7. Sweeet!  Great news for us!!  When was the last time we had a full roster with 13 players on scholarship?  It is going to be tough to get everyone playing time, but this team should be very very good next year.

Richardson, Dante, Soares, Guerrier, Butler, Wur, Bittle, Barthelemy, Cousinard, Rigsby, Williams, Ware, and Johnson.

3400? That would put Nix in top 5 all time. AB tops Harrington and DT? Who would have thought?

Thomas' numbers are skewed a little.  Most of the time those teams were up by more than 3 TDs at half and didn't have to put the ball in the air anymore 😆

That same argument is what makes Marcus' numbers so unbelievable.  GOAT!

  9. I am probably in the minority, but I am completely against this, especially considering the likely next steps of eliminating the divisions (no point anymore) and going to 8 conference games.  The only way this works is to play a true Round-Robin schedule.

Some team in the near future with the easiest conference record (missing the Top 3 teams in conference play) is going to have one more win than the team with the hardest record (missing the Bottom 3 schools in conference play) and everyone is going to go ballistic about how it is not fair.

That is much like the Saab story I heard in reverse. I guy came to work for a software company, and was told he would be paid in stock options as a signing bonus. He had heard about getting a car as a bonus so he negotiated getting a car instead, quite the negotiator. He got a Saab, instead of Microsoft stock before any splits. Quite the sob story.

    Ouch!

  11. Here are my favorites. I don't own any of these currently, but did have two early Broncos a when I was younger (1970 and 1976).  It was a mistake to sell those.

    Sports Car: 66 Shelby GT350

    Truck: Early Ford Bronco

Sedan: 1964 Lincoln with suicide doors

I would be very very surprised if the starting QB wasn't Nix.

I would also be completely shocked if it was not Nix.  How could it not be Nix?  He has every advantage right now....overall college experience, experience with Dillingham, and experience against Georgia.  Throw in the fact that Lanning has indicated that his top evaluation criteria for a QB is points per possession.  If that is the case, Nix separated himself pretty well in the spring game.  I don't see how he is not the guy unless he is hurt.

Let's put some respect on Marios name!

The Ducks program was a dumpster fire when Mario got the job. Helf didn't recruit worth beans and if they say a team takes on a coach's persona, then we were soft as baby poo. We are lucky Willy T poached Mario away from Bama to come here and we are lucky Mario got the job.

Mario was a relentless worker and built a culture where this team stacked blue chips who were down to put the work in to be a Playoff Team. Mario left this team stocked with talent like we have ever has had and he set a high recruiting bar for Lanning to meet. Mario brought this program back from irrelevant to relevant.

Mario was 35-13 here for his career with 2 Pac 12 title and a Rose Bowl win. Helf has us 4-8 in 2015 and Mario put 9 wins on the board in 2017 his first year! In 2019 Mario was 12-2 and won the Rose Bowl, how many Ducks coaches have a Rose Bowl win?

He put 10 wins on the board in 2021 and had us in the Pac 12 Championship game again. Only Chip, Helf and Mario won a Rose Bowl and Mario built up to get there.

Bellotti won 67.8% of his games

Chip won 86.7% of his games after taking over a team that went 10-3

Helf won 67.8% of his games after taking over Chips team and ran it into the ground with a 4-8 final season and 2-7 in the Pac!!!

Mario won 72.9% of his games after taking over a 7-5 team and has the 2nd highest winning percentage among Ducks coaches!

Those are the facts of Marios record, they aren't open to dispute, look it all up. Mario is a program builder, hardworking culture guy, he is elite in those areas.

That said he is far from perfect, as most coaches and people are. His glaring weakness is his offensive philosophy is akin to a penny slot gambler who minimum bets. Mario wanted to control the ball with his running game, play solid defense, limit turnovers, run the clock, possess the ball, limit the other teams' possessions and was happy to win the game by one score.

In doing this he overlooked he had the offensive talent to just plain out score the other team, and his offensive skill players felt that wasn't the scheme Mario sold them. Mario's scheme also led to a lack of offensive production and put his defense on the field for more snaps and in closer games than if he had just turned his offense loose.

The 2019 was a PLAYOFF TEAM and Mario held it back Herbs last year. Chip, Kiffin, Herman being offensive types would have taken that team to the playoffs i have no doubt. Mario BULIT that team and led it to 12 wins but he also kept it out of the playoffs, not many coaches even accomplish that. I give Mario all due credit for thar and all the other great things he did, but he could have done even more if he wasn't married to his prevent offense.

Mario had the class to come back and meet with the team unlike Kelly when he bailed for LSU. Mario had a leaving town interview with John Clownzanno and that shows class. Mario isn't a bad coach he just has a weakness he needs to see and fix it.

Mario has left this team LOADED with more talent than Chip left when he went, Mario did not fail with his stewardship of this program. But Mario did fail to get the maximum potential reached in his time here. If we want to call Mario a failure, then his failure exceeds everyone else sucess than Chip.

If you want to hate on Mario maybe, we need to consider that Ducks Privilege?

I have no doubt Mario is going to load up the U and win the ACC soon.

This is a great post.  There is a HUGE talent gap in the Pac-12 between the Top 3 teams (Oregon, USC, and Washington) and the rest of the conference.  Each of those three teams have more than DOUBLE the number of 4&5 star prospects of fourth place UCLA. Oregon has the most roster talent in the PAC and Mario is directly responsible for that.

Talent can mask a ton of problems and there is no question that Mario can get talent in the door. Oregon had a ton of issues under Mario on both offense and defense, but a lot of those issues were masked by the talent he was able to put on the field.  TVD is an outstanding QB and he is going to make Mario look pretty good next year. In fact, I wouldn't be totally surprised if he pulled it off next year and won the ACC.  The ACC is in a similar situation with the PAC in that there are three teams with the majority of the talent in the conference - Clemson, Miami, and North Carolina.  Miami's roster has almost equivalent talent level to Oregon's roster, so he will do pretty well.

However, Mario's coaching decisions and his 'we are going to have more physicality' offense is going to keep him from winning it all.

This is an awesome take:  "His glaring weakness is his offensive philosophy is akin to a penny slot gambler who minimum bets"  LOL!

Agreed that his numbers don't pop out at you but DA and his new assistant coach must see something there. The article remarked on his improved output late in the year. He is a bigger guard at 6'4"  211# and on tape is pretty physical without getting into foul trouble very often. And comparing a guard's FG% to overall team % is a bit apples to oranges as post players will bring the overall number up above that when compared only to the backcourt.

True, but 39% is just flat out bad.  Yikes!

This one is a head scratcher for sure.  Hopefully he shoots it a little better next year.  It sounds like he was coming on a little at the end of the year, so lets hope that continues.

  15.  “SC's returning four starters from an O-line that was rated No. 1 in the country last year

LOL!  What???  Not even close.  They were not even the best in the Pac-12.  In line yards per carry, Oregon State (3.26), Oregon (3.21), and Arizona State (3.17) all averaged above 3.

What about USC?  They averaged 2.83 line yards per carry.

Utah and OSU were both better in pass blocking as well, allowing significantly less sacks.

That is a completely insane comment.
