  1. Another thing to consider is timing.  The world has changed significantly over the past 20 years.  FaceTime, Zoom, social media, increase in travel, etc make distance less of a factor with 18 year old recruits.

I believe this has greatly benefited Oregon in recruiting and Dan is taking full advantage of it.

As others have pointed out, he is getting what he needs at Oregon, including landing top recruits.

  2. I see both sides of this.  As a coach, I think DL needs to set an example here.  However, I also think it is important to teach and give second chances.  I know I got my fair share of second chances when I was in my teens and 20s.

If it was me, I would probably sit him for the Purdue game to reinforce that his behavior was unacceptable.  IMO, that is probably sufficient considering what he did.

Klatt has had a rough go this week with his opinions.  I have never really understood the argument Team X is Y number of plays away from being undefeated and a great team.  Great teams make plays when they really need them and average to below average teams do not.  That is the difference between being great and being average.  USC is 3-3 because they couldn't make the plays when they really needed them.  Therefore, by definition, they are average.

As we bask in the afterglow of last week's big win, and ponder why so many in the media seem confused that Oregon is really "that good", it occurred to me as to why.

There are too many old timers doing sports. Retired players, former coaches, many who have been doing it for 25, 30, even 40 years!

Think about it, how long has tOSU been a powerhouse football program? Or Penn St.? Michigan?

    Their whole lives. 40 - 60 years!

We at OBD agree, we weren't very good in the 70's or 80's. But we've been one of the best the past 25. All current players in CFB or high-school have known Oregon to be good their entire lives.

But not the sports writers, broadcasters.

Add to that the incredible Dan Lanning, accompanied with NIL support, best facilities and excellent coaching, why wouldn't every kid want to play at Oregon.

Lanning is working his tail off, and we are finally seeing the fruits on the field and with recruits. He really is an amazing young man.

Btw, the first branch of his coaching tree, ASU head coach Kenny Dillingham has his team 5-1 in their new conference BIG12. Surprising all the pundits. Proving once again DL knows how to pick em.

This is a great post.  I think there is a lot of truth to this.  A lot of the older generation fans of these programs are still stuck on and convinced that tradition means more than anything, including the people running them.

However, ask the younger generation about “tradition” and they will just laugh at you.  The world is changing faster than ever.  Their culture is change, innovation and adoption.  Oregon checks all those boxes right now.

    On the topic of USC:

USC is the definition of a “has-been” program.  They are the equivalent of the Sears catalog trying complete with Amazon.  The thought within that program and among the fans is that USC was the best, so they should always be the best.

But in reality, USC is stale and tired to the people that matter - recruits and players.  From their garbage stadium, to their plain tired jerseys with no names on the back, to the “Hollywood” scene (which is no longer that cool), to their annoying stories about the glory days when everyone wore leather helmets; they are moving backwards faster than most people realize.

USC has a program issue.  They refuse to change and they are slowly becoming the Sears catalog of college football.  It’s like watching a car crash.

Just take a look at what Sarkisian, Kiffin, and Helton are doing right now with their respective programs. Even Orgeron won a few games in 2019 😂,

They can fire Riley, but it won’t matter who they bring in to replace him.  The entire attitude around the program is the issue.  Until that changes, they are going to continue to slip.

Now compare that to Oregon, where the culture has inspired coaches to succeed through innovation, adoption, program improvements, and change.  Every head coach that has left this program since Rich Brooks, has never been able to find even remotely similar success other places.

The people in charge of USC can’t see this, and I hope they never do.

  5. I think the original poster is mostly correct.  Most just want to do a good job.  Maybe there are some gaps in knowledge or other “misses”, but overall it usually evens out somewhere along the way.

That being said, what did Oregon do to Rod Gilmore over the years?   That dude flat out hates us.

  6. Nobody is really talking (outside of true duck fans) about how good this defense is right now.

Nine straight quarters without an offensive touchdown by the first team defense.  When was the last time that happened at Oregon, if ever?

Have held every team to under 200 yards passing so far this year.

    Insane!

What’s even crazier, is looking at all the numbers, then realizing just how good Ashton Jeanty is.

Joel Klatt's latest video addresses his thoughts about the Alabama-Vanderbilt game.  He says he expressed concerns previously about Alabama's defense and this loss confirms it.  He even goes as far as calling the DeBoer/Alabama another Riley/USC with all offense and horrendous defense.  OUCH!

This is just my opinion, but DeBoer is a very good football coach.  I expect this situation to be solved.  Riley on the other hand.....

This is a great article on why USC is failing.  Yep, they are saying "failing".  They don't think Riley should be fired,  but they lay most of the blame on Riley for not fixing the defense earlier, for not recruiting well, and for not bringing in elite talent in the transfer portal.

Well, news flash:  players want to go to elite programs and that has NOT been USC for a long time.

If there is further evidence that Oregon lives rent free, under the heading of "The Truth About Lincoln Riley", the writer says "Riley wasted the 2023 season, and that wasted year put USC well behind Oregon in recruiting and portal acquisitions."

    Bwahahahahahaha!!!!!

It is ridiculous to think Lincoln Riley should be fired, but it is obvious that he wasted a whole year at USC and is paying the price for his...

That’s hilarious.  USC has been behind Oregon since the day Chip Kelly walked into the Oregon program and changed everything.
