  4. Social media stunned after No. 2 UCLA eliminated from NCAA softball tournament Upsets happen all the time in the NCAA tournament. Whether it’s basketball, baseball, or lacrosse we see Davids beat Goliaths all the time in collegiate postseason play. However, what we don’t see all the time is the No. 2 seed in the tournament not making it out of the opening weekend, especially in a double-elimination format. But that’s what happened to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins this weekend. After losing to Grand Canyon on Friday night, the Bruins were upset by the Liberty Flames on Saturday in a stunning 2-1 loss. The last time UCLA was eliminated from the regional round of the tournament was back in 2013. That was the third season in a row in which they failed to qualify for the super regional. The stunning upset opens the door for San Diego State to advance if they can beat Liberty in the regional finals on Sunday. The winner would then face the winner of the Salt Lake City regional between Utah and Ole Miss. Social media was buzzing Saturday evening at the elimination of the UCLA Bruins and here are some of the best reactions. 7. Oregon failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015-16 and lost its top two players from a ninth-place team in the Pac-12 to the transfer portal this spring. But UO athletic director Rob Mullens is confident coach Kelly Graves will right the ship and get the Ducks back to the level of success they had a couple of years ago. “I have full faith and confidence in Kelly,” Mullens said. “We only missed the NCAA Tournament one time, that was this year, and we were right there on the bubble. Our NET was top 20, played an extremely difficult schedule. They battled some injuries as well and we had that stretch where we were in every single game (and lost eight of nine). You probably win one more of those and you’re in the NCAA Tournament.” Rob Mullens confident Oregon women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves ‘will get us back’ WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM Oregon failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015-16 and lost its top two players from a ninth-place team in the Pac-12 to the transfer portal this spring
  8. Lincoln Riley releases statement on USC AD Mike Bohn's resignation Some major news dropped Friday afternoon when the Los Angeles Times first reported Mike Bohn would resign as USC athletic director, effective immediately. One of Bohn’s biggest hires in Southern California was football coach Lincoln Riley, who tweeted a statement Saturday in response to his resignation. “I will always be appreciative of Mike Bohn for his role in bringing us to USC & certainly wish both he and his family all the best,” Riley tweeted. “With the current state of the programs in our Athletic Department, there is a really special opportunity ahead for all of us Trojans. I have full confidence that our university leadership will continue to do everything possible to support us. 10. Hotline mailbag: ESPN's move to streaming (what it means for the Pac-12), the wait for SDSU By Jon Wilner What are the media rights implications for the Pac-12 (and college sports) resulting from ESPN selling its main channel directly to consumers as a standalone streaming service? — @MattZemek For those who missed it, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that ESPN will indeed become a direct-to-consumer offering. Yes, the main network is being turned into a streaming platform, just like Apple and Amazon, Peacock and Paramount … and ESPN+. When the transition happens — it's undoubtedly years away — all the college football content owned and licensed by ESPN will be available on streaming. Which would seem to undercut the narrative that the Pac-12 is doomed if the next media rights deal includes a streaming component. Which is what the Hotline has been arguing all along: The Pac-12 is not doomed if the media rights deal includes a package of games on streaming. It's only doomed if the media deal doesn't include games on ESPN. There are two reasons the conference must have a contractual agreement with ESPN: — Because of the reach provided by the pay-cable ecosystem (although that would be rendered moot if the flagship ESPN network becomes a streaming platform). — Because a contract with ESPN would force the network's highly influential studio shows to talk about Pac-12 games, interview Pac-12 players and coaches and show Pac-12 highlights. That's the real value in a partnership with ESPN: the brand-building component. Hotline mailbag: ESPN's move to streaming (what it means for the Pac-12), the wait for SDSU WWW.KSL.COM Once ESPN becomes direct-to-consumer, streaming will be mainstream.

  12. Saturday afternoon was a big day for the Oregon Duck football program as they secured commitments from 4-star defensive lineman Xadavien Sims and 4-star quarterback Michael Buren. The commitments vault the Oregon Ducks into the Top 5 in the national recruiting rankings, now opening the door to a question. Can the 2024 recruiting class become the highest-rated class in program history? That honor currently goes to the 2021 recruiting class that signed 23 recruits, and four 5-star prospects and finished with a 287.67 ranking under Mario Cristobal. The short answer is yes. The Ducks are in a position to make a run at that class ranking and sign its top class ever. The finish over the next seven months will decide how close Oregon gets there. With latest commitments in the fold, can Oregon now go for its best class ever? 247SPORTS.COM The Ducks are in a position to now ask the question: Can they sign the best class ever?
  13. The Pac-12 is primed to be one of the best conferences not named the SEC for the 2023 college football season. Recruiting has been at an all-time high in the past several seasons and the talent pool in the Pac-12 shows it. Teams such as Oregon, USC and even Washington match up well with any program in the country where pure talent is concerned. On3.com went ahead and ranked the Top 100 players in college football and the Pac-12 is represented favorably. But there were some glaring snubs when it comes to Oregon. Quarterback Bo Nix is ranked 13th overall. That’s it for Oregon. No Troy Franklin. No Jordan Burch. 14. The No. 1 player in Oklahoma has made his decision, and he's set to leave the Mid-South region in favor of the Pacific Northwest. Four-star Durant (Okla.) defensive end Xadavien Sims announced his commitment to Oregon on Saturday. Sims opted for the Ducks over a top-five that also included Michigan State, Oklahoma, TCU, and Vanderbilt, with the Sooners especially making a strong push throughout the process. In the end, Dan Lanning and the Pac-12 program won out for the top player in the Sooner State, winning a head-to-head battle over Brent Venables. Lanning and the Ducks have had some success in the region, particularly in Texas, and Sims is the latest in that development. ***** 6'4" | 280 LBS | SDE | 2024 DURANT DURANT, OK RIVALS REACTS RIVALS REACTS Xadavien Sims moved into Oklahoma for his junior season after beginning his prep career in the Lone Star State. The four-star is a well-built prospect with a good-looking frame at 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds. He has shown the ability to play all over the defensive line, from the edge to sliding inside. Sims plays with a lot of strength in the trenches, where's he able to win consistently at the point of attack. His track and field background, where he throws the shot put and discus, shows up on tape as he battles offensive linemen. Furthermore, Sims features some athletic upside that can be tapped into even further on the next level. He has played tight end and linebacker, showcasing ability to play in space. The best is likely still ahead for the Rivals100 recruit.

  18. Tehya Bird is proving to be a different player in critical situations and in the postseason. The Oregon third baseman, a .277 hitter on the season, is hitting more than 100 points higher with two outs and runners in scoring position following yet another clutch hit. Bird’s three-run home run in the second capped a 10-pitch at-bat and gave Oregon the lead for good in a 5-4 win over Notre Dame Friday afternoon at Bogle Park in Fayetteville, Arkansas. “I thought she had a really good at-bat,” Oregon coach Melyssa Lombardi said. “She continued to foul off pitches; it allowed her to get in a really good rhythm at the plate and then she got her pitch to hit. Love all these guys in different moments have come up big for us. 22. Here's the first rundown of the 2024 cycle's Pac-12 recruiter rankings with the Ducks atop the conference recruiting leaderboard and 7th nationally. The Ducks are once again out in front on the Pac-12 recruiting leaderboard. This isn't unfamiliar territory, as the program has signed the league's top class in four of the past five years. This class is far from done though. There are still dozens of highly-regarded preps who've yet to pick a school. The Ducks continue to get work done on the recruiting trail, and that fact is due to the hard work of its assistant coaches. These coaches act as the point-men in numerous recruitments for top prospects. They deal with the day-to-day grind, help coordinate visits and close the deal. And when they do the latter, they're credited in 247Sports Recruiter Rankings. These rankings help communicate which coaches have enjoyed the most success on the trail. As things stand right now, the Ducks are miles ahead of the rest of the league with a No. 7 ranking. Colorado is second-best with a 34th national ranking. Limar's spring game was a fairly quiet one. He carried the ball twice for six yards and caught one pass for 14. He also memorably dropped a pass for a would-be third down conversion.
