Top-10 RB Jeremy Payne puts Oregon among top schools in 2024 The Oregon Ducks have a strong history at the running back position over the past several decades, and that hasn’t changed at all under Carlos Locklyn, who took over as the RB coach under Dan Lanning in 2022. The Ducks have brought a number of highly-rated RBs to Eugene over the past couple of seasons, landing guys like Jordan James, Dante Dowdell, and Jayden Limar in the recruiting world, while also bringing Bucky Irving and Noah Whittington to Eugene via the transfer portal. It appears that Oregon is in good shape going forward, as well, landing among the top schools for 2024 4-star RB Jeremy Payne. Standing at 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, Payne is rated as the No. 10 RB in the class, and No. 153 overall player in the nation, per 247Sports. The Ducks extended an offer to Payne back in December of last year, and have not yet received a visit from the Texas back. We will likely see that change going forward. Oregon Spring Ball Player Spotlight: Austin Novosad and the future of the Ducks' QB position The Oregon Ducks will be taking the practice field and getting the spring football season started a week from today. This fact has brought a ton of excitement to Eugene. Why? Because after the successful and encouraging 2022 season under Dan Lanning, there seems to be more anticipation surrounding this program than we’ve seen in the past few seasons. The Ducks have a Heisman contender at quarterback, a potential Biletnikoff contender at wide receiver, and a running back group that could be among the best in the nation next season. On the defensive side of the ball, there are some key returning starters in the front seven, a couple of promising up-and-coming players in the secondary, and a handful of intriguing transfer-portal players who could end up making a massive difference for Oregon. ESPN names Oregon's 'newcomer to watch' prior to the start of spring practice ESPN previewed spring practice for every Pac-12 team on Wednesday. That included Oregon, which is looking to build off of a 9-3 campaign in Dan Lanning’s first season at the helm. The Ducks were rolling until a late-season injury to quarterback Bo Nix preceded losses in two of their last three regular-season games. A big reason for the success up to that point was Oregon’s ability to keep Nix upright and free from any danger. With a huge piece of that offensive line moving on from the program, Oregon’s strength up front will be a major storyline throughout the offseason. ESPN’s writers seem to feel the same. Jason Zandamela on A’lique Terry, Oregon Interest The Ducks are pursuing a top offensive lineman from Florida in the 2024 class. When Dan Lanning hired A'lique Terry, his fire on the recruiting trail was something that immediately stood out. He played a big role in the Ducks recruiting Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 2021 class when he was on the staff under Mario Cristobal and he's gotten right to work since rejoining the Ducks. One of the players he has his eye on is 2024 interior offensive lineman Jason Zandamela from Clearwater (Fla.) Clearwater International Academy, who was offered by Adrian Klemm. The 6-foot-3, 286-pound lineman is originally from Mozambique and moved to the U.S. prior to the 2022 season. He spoke with John Garcia Jr. at the Under Armour Next camp in Orlando and has started to build a relationship with Terry at Oregon. "Coach Terry recently got hired. He's a Florida guy. Spoke to him. Oregon Spring Ball Position Battles: WR room should be main attraction For many reasons, the 2022 season felt like a breath of fresh air for Oregon Duck fans, offensively speaking at the very least. After a few years of gritting through the vanilla offensive scheme that came with Mario Cristobal and his tenure in Eugene, Duck fans were treated to a new system, headed up by Kenny Dillingham. This hurry-up, no-huddle (HUNH) system threw a litany of new elements at the Ducks, including a few things that we hadn’t seen for quite some time in Eugene, like QB snaps from under center, and the reintroduction of the deep ball. It’s that latter half of the equation that really got fans buzzing inside Autzen Stadium. With deep passing back in the mix, the Ducks saw a resurgence at the wide receiver position. No longer were wideouts confined to catching short screens or 5-yard curls over the middle, but they could open up and run, trying to get behind the defense and take the top off. This gave us the emergence of Troy Franklin, who quickly became the team’s top receiver, and one of the best receivers in the Pac-12. While we don’t expect that to change in 2023, what will be interesting to see is who steps up alongside Franklin. Chase Cota was a solid piece last year, but he graduated this off-season. Dont’e Thornton had his moments, but a transfer to Tennessee after the season left his spot on the depth chart vacant. Kris Hutson is still on the team, and he likely has a leg up when it comes to divvying up target shares. However, there is a lot of new competition that he will have to hold off. The Ducks were active in the transfer portal at the WR position this offseason, adding proven players like Traeshon Holden and Tez Johnson to the mix. They also have a handful of incredibly talented, but unproven players who came to Eugene over the past 2 seasons as recruits. Guys like Kyler Kasper, Justius Lowe, and Ashton Cozart will all vie for targets this spring, while 5-star WR Jurrion Dickey will work to state his case for playing time when he arrives in Eugene this summer. When he plays safety he's able to fly to the ball and get a hand up in the receiver's face, forcing regular incompletions. The same thing can be said while at corner, only difference is he'll keep up with the receiver right from the start. Being athletic enough to play both positions also allows him to develop into an elite defensive player by understanding the different views of the defense. His tackling is also great, he breaks down a lot before wrapping up the ballcarrier one-on-one in the open field. He flies to the opposite side of the field if he has to in order to make a play. A lot of his highlights had him batting balls down left and right which is great thing to see. Ten Ducks who need to step up this spring for the team to reach its ceiling Oregon kicks off spring practice in about a week. There was much to address this offseason thanks to graduation, early draft entry and transfers. Over two dozen new players will be on hand for spring to help fill holes. Ultimately, that's what much of what the spring will be about — identifying who fits where best. The Oregon Duck men's basketball program had two members of this year's fourth-place Pac-12 squad selected to the league's All-Conference Teams following the conclusion of league play. Coaches among the Pac-12 voted on the all-league teams and the rosters were released by the Pac-12 offices on Tuesday. Senior N'Faly Dante was selected to the Pac-12 first team following a career year for the Oregon Ducks. The 6-foot-11 center from Bamako, Mali posted a career-high 13.5 points per game this season, while also grabbing a career-high 8.2 rebounds per game. Dante's 8.2 rebounds ranked fourth among Pac-12 players and his 3.1 offensive rebounds per game ranked second. Dante also posted a career-high 1.4 blocks per game, ranking sixth among all players in the Pac-12. Dante averaged a career-high 26.2 minutes per game. Senior point guard Will Richardson was named Honorable Mention by the coaches after completing his fifth regular season for the Ducks. The 6-foot-5 guard from Hinesville, Georgia averaged 12.5 points, a career-high 5.2 assists per game, and a career-high 1.5 steals per game. Being 6-foot-5, 285 pounds comes with a huge advantage that he utilizes very well. From the initial contact on the defender to driving him into the ground 15 yards down the field, Wilson displays that elite offensive lineman talent all through his film. Even if a defender runs at him full speed it's like hitting a brick wall. His run blocking is scary good, specifically how fast he gets to his blocking assignment and even sneaks an additional block in from time to time. He plays with good leverage as the low man on his blocks, allowing him to easily drive through his opponent. Pass blocking is just as good at his guard position.
