  1. ESPN names Oregon's 'newcomer to watch' prior to the start of spring practice ESPN previewed spring practice for every Pac-12 team on Wednesday. That included Oregon, which is looking to build off of a 9-3 campaign in Dan Lanning’s first season at the helm. The Ducks were rolling until a late-season injury to quarterback Bo Nix preceded losses in two of their last three regular-season games. A big reason for the success up to that point was Oregon’s ability to keep Nix upright and free from any danger. With a huge piece of that offensive line moving on from the program, Oregon’s strength up front will be a major storyline throughout the offseason. ESPN’s writers seem to feel the same. ESPN analysts picked a “newcomer to watch” for each team in the league. For the Ducks, it’s a transfer on the offensive line. Here’s what Kyle Bonagura wrote: Cornelius was one of two transfer offensive linemen to join the program this offseason, alongside former Texas lineman Junior Angilau. ESPN names Oregon’s ‘newcomer to watch’ prior to the start of spring practice SATURDAYOUTWEST.COM ESPN previewed spring ball for teams throughout the Pac-12, and named the top newcomer to watch for the Oregon Ducks.
  2. Jason Zandamela on A’lique Terry, Oregon Interest The Ducks are pursuing a top offensive lineman from Florida in the 2024 class. When Dan Lanning hired A'lique Terry, his fire on the recruiting trail was something that immediately stood out. He played a big role in the Ducks recruiting Jackson Powers-Johnson in the 2021 class when he was on the staff under Mario Cristobal and he's gotten right to work since rejoining the Ducks. One of the players he has his eye on is 2024 interior offensive lineman Jason Zandamela from Clearwater (Fla.) Clearwater International Academy, who was offered by Adrian Klemm. The 6-foot-3, 286-pound lineman is originally from Mozambique and moved to the U.S. prior to the 2022 season. He spoke with John Garcia Jr. at the Under Armour Next camp in Orlando and has started to build a relationship with Terry at Oregon. "Coach Terry recently got hired. He's a Florida guy. Spoke to him. I love how he talks. He's very straight up about everything and he's gonna be real with you as well," Zandamela said." https://www.heraldonline.com/sports/college/article272898315.html#storylink=rss
  3. Oregon Spring Ball Position Battles: WR room should be main attraction For many reasons, the 2022 season felt like a breath of fresh air for Oregon Duck fans, offensively speaking at the very least. After a few years of gritting through the vanilla offensive scheme that came with Mario Cristobal and his tenure in Eugene, Duck fans were treated to a new system, headed up by Kenny Dillingham. This hurry-up, no-huddle (HUNH) system threw a litany of new elements at the Ducks, including a few things that we hadn’t seen for quite some time in Eugene, like QB snaps from under center, and the reintroduction of the deep ball. It’s that latter half of the equation that really got fans buzzing inside Autzen Stadium. With deep passing back in the mix, the Ducks saw a resurgence at the wide receiver position. No longer were wideouts confined to catching short screens or 5-yard curls over the middle, but they could open up and run, trying to get behind the defense and take the top off. This gave us the emergence of Troy Franklin, who quickly became the team’s top receiver, and one of the best receivers in the Pac-12. While we don’t expect that to change in 2023, what will be interesting to see is who steps up alongside Franklin. Chase Cota was a solid piece last year, but he graduated this off-season. Dont’e Thornton had his moments, but a transfer to Tennessee after the season left his spot on the depth chart vacant. Kris Hutson is still on the team, and he likely has a leg up when it comes to divvying up target shares. However, there is a lot of new competition that he will have to hold off. The Ducks were active in the transfer portal at the WR position this offseason, adding proven players like Traeshon Holden and Tez Johnson to the mix. They also have a handful of incredibly talented, but unproven players who came to Eugene over the past 2 seasons as recruits. Guys like Kyler Kasper, Justius Lowe, and Ashton Cozart will all vie for targets this spring, while 5-star WR Jurrion Dickey will work to state his case for playing time when he arrives in Eugene this summer. Oregon Football: Previewing WR position battle ahead of spring ball DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM There’s a ton of talent at the WR position in Eugene. Watching players jockey for position on the depth chart this spring will be fun.
  4. Signee Spotlight: CB Collin Gill Oregon adds a versatile defensive back from Washington, D.C. in their 2023 class. In today’s spotlight we will be taking a look at another east to west coast connection with the signing of another corner back. Three-star Collin Gill will be joining a corner back room looking to redeem themselves. VITALS: Height/Weight: 6’0/200 pounds -Hometown: Waldorf, MD -High School: St. Johns College High School - First-Team All-WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) Defensive back SIGNEE SPOTLIGHT: 2023 Oregon OL Gernorris Wilson EVALUATION Playing a mix of both corner and safety, Gill looked impressive at both spots. When he plays safety he's able to fly to the ball and get a hand up in the receiver's face, forcing regular incompletions. The same thing can be said while at corner, only difference is he'll keep up with the receiver right from the start. Being athletic enough to play both positions also allows him to develop into an elite defensive player by understanding the different views of the defense. His tackling is also great, he breaks down a lot before wrapping up the ballcarrier one-on-one in the open field. He flies to the opposite side of the field if he has to in order to make a play. A lot of his highlights had him batting balls down left and right which is great thing to see. His best trait has to be his timing, getting to receiver just before or as the ball arrives in time to make plays. https://www.star-telegram.com/sports/college/article272894900.html#storylink=rss
  5. The Oregon Ducks continue to make a strong push at the start of the 2024 recruiting cycle, where they already have a class that is ranked inside the top 10 of the nation and has a good chance to get better. On Tuesday, one of the top safeties in the class, 4-star Aaron Flowers, announced his top 10 schools and had the Ducks in the fold. Flowers is rated by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 11 safety in the class and No. 175 overall player in 2024. 6. Oregon Spring Game Visitor List Taking Shape Last year, Oregon hosted a huge recruiting weekend during its Spring Game. Visitors included eventual Oregon signees Jurrion Dickey, Rodrick Pleasant, Cole Martin and Blake Purchase, as well as such high-end targets as 5-stars David Hicks and Johnny Cook. In Dan Lanning’s second season, the 2023 visitors’ list already figures to top last year’s. Two 5-star and top 5 recruits nationally already have scheduled visits for April 29. 7. Ten Ducks who need to step up this spring for the team to reach its ceiling Oregon kicks off spring practice in about a week. The Ducks enter spring with high expectations for 2023, and will need to maximize the 15 spring practices, which begin on March 16 and conclude with the spring game on April 29, in order to do so. There was much to address this offseason thanks to graduation, early draft entry and transfers. Over two dozen new players will be on hand for spring to help fill holes. Ultimately, that's what much of what the spring will be about — identifying who fits where best. Atop the priority list will be finding four new offensive line starters, shoring up a defense which was sub-par last season and a special teams unit which struggled mightily down the stretch. Today, I'll be naming 10 members of the team who will need to fill key roles during this spring's practices. Do not consider this to be an exhaustive list by any means. Of course there are more than 10 people who need to step up. These 10 just might be the most integral right now. 8. Matt Painter was almost 3 weeks from closing out a Big Ten regular-season title when he took the podium after a loss to Maryland. He admitted something that few Power 5 coaches are willing to actually say on the record. “I’m not really worried about the Big Ten Tournament — I’m worried about the NCAA Tournament,” Painter said (via The Indianapolis Star). “You don’t get judged on that one — the Big Ten Tournament.” I mean, is he wrong? Debate: Is it time to retire the Pac-12 Tournament — and others like it? SATURDAYOUTWEST.COM In the good ol' days, there was no Pac-12 Tournament. Then there was ... and wasn't ... and was again. 10. Thinner Oregon Ducks tight end room should mean more opportunities beginning in spring We’re taking a look at each position group as Oregon prepares to open spring practice on March 16. The first of a 10-part series looks at the tight ends. Oregon’s tight end room entering spring practice is considerably different than last season. The transfers of Cam McCormick, Moliki Matavao and Terrell Tilmon leave the Ducks with Terrance Ferguson and Patrick Herbert returning and freshman Kenyon Sadiq joining Add to the personnel turnover the change to Will Stein’s offense and the Ducks will have a different look at the position and opportunities should be abundant. 11. The Oregon Duck men's basketball program had two members of this year's fourth-place Pac-12 squad selected to the league's All-Conference Teams following the conclusion of league play. Coaches among the Pac-12 voted on the all-league teams and the rosters were released by the Pac-12 offices on Tuesday. Senior N'Faly Dante was selected to the Pac-12 first team following a career year for the Oregon Ducks. The 6-foot-11 center from Bamako, Mali posted a career-high 13.5 points per game this season, while also grabbing a career-high 8.2 rebounds per game. Dante's 8.2 rebounds ranked fourth among Pac-12 players and his 3.1 offensive rebounds per game ranked second. 14. Despite that, it appears that Oregon coaches and players are still working hard to try and get Bryant into the mix, according to Greg Biggens. Bryant had a great season in 2021, scoring 7 touchdowns in total, but the increased competition in 2022 with Jordan Addison and Brenden Rice in the picture caused his target share to drop. Now he’s looking for a new team to play for. Might that be the Ducks? They will get a chance to try and convince him of that next week. Oregon Football: USC transfer WR Gary Bryant to visit Oregon DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM It looks like the Ducks aren’t done trying to add to the WR depth chart this offseason.
  15. Signee Spotlight: OL Gernorris Wilson Oregon adds some depth up front with a state champion from the Sunshine State. In today's signee spotlight we're taking a look at a signee along the offensive trenches. Sunshine state native Gernorris Wilson from Lakeland, FL joins an offensive powerhouse in Oregon's 2023 recruiting class. VITALS Height/Weight: 6’5”/285 pounds -Hometown: Lakeland, FL -High School: Lakeland School -Status: Enrolled EVALUATION One thing that coaches love to see on tape is their player’s giving 110% each play and that's exactly what Wilson did for his team. Being 6-foot-5, 285 pounds comes with a huge advantage that he utilizes very well. From the initial contact on the defender to driving him into the ground 15 yards down the field, Wilson displays that elite offensive lineman talent all through his film. Even if a defender runs at him full speed it's like hitting a brick wall. His run blocking is scary good, specifically how fast he gets to his blocking assignment and even sneaks an additional block in from time to time. He plays with good leverage as the low man on his blocks, allowing him to easily drive through his opponent. Pass blocking is just as good at his guard position. If no one comes his way his head is moving everywhere to find someone free to defend his quarterback. https://www.heraldonline.com/sports/college/article272800915.html#storylink=rss

  20. Decide for yourself if you think the Pac-12 has been wise to be quiet and guarded over the last six months. There’s some logic in it. Former Fox Sports Networks president Bob Thompson said earlier this week, “Give the Pac-12 credit; there haven’t been any leaks. They’ve kept things very tight.” That’s probably appreciated by the Pac-12’s negotiating partners. Beyond that, though, I think it’s been a misfire by the conference to allow so many other parties tell the conference’s story and muddy up the public conversation. “Imminent demise”? “Pac-12 teetering”? The conference presidents and chancellors don’t think so. Multiple athletic directors wave off the negativity as noise, too. And Kliavkoff hasn’t projected any of that, especially not on Thursday, or even Wednesday, when he sat in the same chair at the arena inside Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Still, that’s the narrative being peddled by the spin doctors and their puppets. It’s hurt the brand. It’s damaged public confidence. The Pac-12 needs something positive to talk about next week when the men’s basketball tournament starts. Not a brief statement of unity or administrators/executives speaking anonymously, but some bonafide news. There has been a tsunami-like build up on the media rights front over the last six months. Apple or Amazon? ESPN, too? Expansion? There’s been constant public discussion and daily anticipation. We’re all waiting for Christmas morning, but we keep waking up in March. I get it. The Pac-12’s strategy has remained consistent. It has refused to engage in the public misinformation battle, choosing instead to focus its energy on getting the best possible media rights deal done — we hope. It’s an intentional, philosophical decision. One that may be driven by the Pac-12’s CEO Group more than Kliavkoff’s team at headquarters. Fans in the Pac-12 need some news soon. Recruits want to know what’s going on. Coaches are restless and wondering, too. Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith told me this week that he knows the media rights negotiations are out of his control, but he’s tracking developments like the rest of us. Meanwhile boosters at SMU, San Diego State and some other places have watched and waited. We’re all sort of just… waiting.
