Canzano: Timing is Everything for Pac-12 and Oregon Ducks
A few things I've learned. The newest voting member of the Pac-12 Conference CEO Group was tossed into the fray just a couple of weeks ago. I doubt she’ll unpack. Jamie Moffitt was appointed “interim president” at the University of Oregon on March 13. She replaced UO’s previous interim president, Patrick Phillips, who left that post after he didn’t get the permanent job. John Karl Scholz will take over July 1 as the full-time president in Eugene. At that point, per a UO source, Moffitt will return to her usual duty as the school’s vice president and chief financial officer. Got all that? The Pac-12 Conference continues to negotiate its media rights deal and explore expansion. I was told on Wednesday by a CEO Group member that “the board likes the deal” that is taking shape, but the conference presidents and chancellors don’t seem to be in a hurry. Multiple members of the CEO Group have gone public in recent months. Oregon has been notably silent. I’ve chalked that up to the turnover in administration in Eugene. Former president Michael Schill left for the same job at Northwestern University last August. Schill was an outspoken, experienced, stabilizing voice who served on the group’s executive committee. Phillips was new to the role. Moffitt is even newer. How will Oregon weigh its options? What matters most to the Ducks? Does Phil Knight get a vote? The university trustees? Someone else? These are important questions. Canzano: Timing is everything for Pac-12 and Oregon Ducks WWW.JOHNCANZANO.COM A few things I've learned. There is a John Canzano and Jon Wilner podcast at the bottom of his article. Topics on Pac-12 expansion, SDSU effect and spring football.

Spring Football Practice: 4/4/23
Oregon Preparing to Host a Loaded Group of Visitors for Annual Spring Game Some of the biggest names in the country are flocking to Eugene to check out the Ducks. Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks aren't messing around on the recruiting trail this spring. They've already hosted some big names on campus this spring but you should only expect the names to get bigger as we get closer to the annual spring game, which is set for Saturday April 29 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. The Ducks have the No. 15 class in the country for 2024, featuring five verbal commitments. Here's an updated list of recruits that are expected to be in attendance. I will continue to update this list as more recruits announce their visit plans and I confirm with sources. https://www.si.com/college/oregon/recruiting/oregon-preparing-to-host-a-loaded-group-of-visitors-for-annual-spring-game

Spring Football Practice: 4/4/23
Spring Ball Takeaways: Ducks get back to work in wet Eugene weather The Oregon Ducks returned to spring football practice after a two-week break on Tuesday morning in a wet and cold Eugene rain at the Hatfield-Dowlin Complex. While the weather was drear, the energy was high for a team that got a taste of football once again back in March and has had a couple of weeks to get ready to attack success once again. With a few new faces on the roster after the break — notably including Ole Miss safety transfer Tysheem Johnson — we got a good look at what this team will take into the spring game at the end of April as far as a roster standpoint. As always, media members were allowed to watch in for the first 15-20 minutes of practice, which included stretching, special teams, and some individual work. Here are some of the biggest takeaways as we got back into it. Oregon Football: Ducks get back to practice after spring break DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Six new players joined the Ducks on Tuesday, and we got to see some pads popping as Oregon resumed spring ball.

Spring Football Practice: 4/4/23
Several new Ducks join Oregon roster for remainder of spring season Back in March, we got a good look at which new players, be it transfers or incoming freshmen, would be joining the Oregon Ducks for the spring football season and working with the team leading up to the spring game. We got ideas on positions and found out what numbers everyone would be wearing. It wasn’t the entire 2023 new-player crop, but over half of the new additions were on the ground in Eugene. After a two-week break for finals and spring break, the Ducks now have more new players with them as they resume practices on Tuesday, growing the roster even more. This won’t be the last time the roster changes, either, though we may be able to feel comfortable with this group of guys until after the spring game. Once May comes around, the transfer portal will open back up, and there are a handful of guys that will surely come and go during that period. For now, though, here are the newest Ducks to land in Eugene and join the team: Oregon Football: New Ducks join roster for remainder of spring season DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM There are a handful of new faces on the Ducks’ roster that joined the team over spring break.

Transfer Portal: Players of Interest
Analyzing Oregon’s Chances With USC Transfer Gary Bryant Jr. The Ducks are battling to add a top wide receiver from the transfer portal. The Oregon Ducks are no strangers to the transfer portal. Whether it's players joining the Ducks or leaving the program, head coach Dan Lanning is well aware of the role the portal plays in overhauling or retooling your roster. Oregon hasn't been as active as other schools in leveraging the portal, but the Ducks have signed 10 players this offseason, including a pair of wide receivers in Traeshon Holden (Alabama) and Tez Johnson (Troy). Might they add another? https://www.heraldonline.com/sports/college/article273755730.html#storylink=rss

Gorney's predictions: Where will the top 10 uncommitted RBs land? Oregon favored for Washington's top prospect. Every time the Seattle (Wash.) O’Dea four-star running back is in Los Angeles, he makes his way over to USC and has an excellent trip. So the Trojans are definitely a major contender in his recruitment. But Oregon still feels like the team to beat since he’s so comfortable there, has a great relationship with the staff and is very familiar with the place. Considering Washington’s success this past season and Jason Brown knowing a bunch of players there as well, the Huskies should be considered high in this race as well. Canzano: Bring on the Invite for San Diego State
John Canzano is echoing the same as Jon Wilner (posted on the forum). Pac-12 should not wait. It would be out of character and off brand for the Pac-12 to seize on the momentum of the Aztecs NCAA Tournament run and extend an immediate invitation to join the conference this week. The Pac-12 presidents and chancellors are mindful of optics. They respect tradition and observe etiquette. The old-guard leadership wouldn’t be caught dead trying to draft off San Diego State’s basketball success. That said, they should totally do it. This is no time for the “new” Pac-12 to act like the “old” Pac-12. The conference shouldn’t wait another week (or month). It should just invite San Diego State now and end the charade. The Aztecs are a no-brainer for the Pac-12. San Diego State has the academics, culture and Pacific Time Zone geography. It would also add 1.1 million television households in a region where the Pac-12 badly needs it. Canzano: Bring on the invite for San Diego State WWW.JOHNCANZANO.COM Pac-12 should not wait.

4-star QB Air Noland puts Oregon Ducks among top schools When it comes to the quarterback position, the Oregon Ducks are still actively working to get their guy in the 2024 class. There is some positive momentum on that front, though, with 4-star QB Air Noland announcing his top schools on Saturday and keeping Dan Lanning’s squad in the mix. Noland is rated by 247Sports as the No. 55 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 7 quarterback. He has yet to take a visit to Eugene, but that will likely change in the coming months. Outside of Noland, the Ducks are also expecting a visit from 5-star QB Dylan Raiola for the annual spring game, and they also have some positive momentum when it comes to the recruitment of 4-star QB Michael Van Buren and 3-star QB Luke Moga. One School Leads for Elite CB Miles Lockhart Entering Spring Miles Lockhart is one of the defensive backs out West and has been on Oregon's radar for a long time. Including Oregon, Lockhart said he's hearing the most from a trio of schools. "Oregon, Utah and Ohio State. Those are the three that come after me the most. That's why they're my top three cause I'm just really big on relationships, how they treat me. If you treat me good I'm gonna want to be at your school and come after you guys as well." He has a few schools in mind for visits this spring, with one being a recent offer in January. "I have Ohio State locked in for April 10 for spring practice and I'm trying to make it up to Oregon actually or maybe their spring game or just a practice," Lockhart said. Where Ducks' 2024 recruiting class stands after rankings shake-up While we get settled in the middle of the spring football season for the Oregon Ducks, recruiting is starting to pick up across the nation. Ducks pick up prediction to land 4-star OT after weekend visit It appears that new Oregon Ducks offensive line coach A’lique Terry is putting in some work early on in his tenure. One of the main reasons Terry was brought to Eugene in order to take over for Adrian Klemm, who left for a job in the NFL with the New England Patriots, was to keep the high level of recruiting up on the offensive line. So far, it appears that’s working. After a big visitor weekend in Eugene, the Ducks have picked up a prediction to land 4-star offensive tackle Bennett Warren, a 6-foot-7, 315 pound player from Texas. Why the Pac-12 Is Struggling to Get a Media Deal
Experts say Pac-12 really could have used BYU when it comes to media rights negotiations The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, Forbes’ Jim Williams sound off on the value of BYU in TV negotiations, expansion When the Big 12 added BYU, it may have made all the difference in the muddled world of college football media negotiations we have been witnessing with the Pac-12 the past nine months. The Pac-12 is losing UCLA and USC and considering expanding to help in negotiations with Apple, Amazon and other potential media partners. The 10 remaining teams have vowed solidarity. Last week presidents at Utah, Arizona and Arizona State made positive public declarations of hope that all will be just fine and negotiations will conclude very soon. The Pac-12 presidents passed on adding BYU eons ago and repeated that in 2010 when Texas and Oklahoma turned down invitations that ultimately went to Utah and Colorado. It became very clear in the past two decades that the Pac-12 did not want to include a religious institution like BYU, declaring “cultural fit” and “research institution” qualifications in its exclusivity decisions. But from a purely athletic and football brand perspective, many experts are now declaring that was a shortsighted move by the “Conference of Champions.” One that is costing them now. Interesting take if we had added BYU. As we all know, It's the would-of, could-of, should-of syndrome of the Pac-12's shortsightedness, one of many. The Pac-12, at this point, is trying to find a way to get the best deal possible. Hopefully with a short contract. If it seems best to add SDSU and SMU (religious institution) to the Pac-12, in 5 years time could boost the conference in their growth. SMU is financially very well endowed. Next contract down the road could find more realignment with Oregon and Washington going to the BIG, or Pac-12 conference grows stronger. Either way we need to get through the next 5 years. Experts say Pac-12 really could have used BYU when it comes to media rights negotiations WWW.DESERET.COM The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel, Forbes’ Jim Williams sound off on value of BYU in media rights negotiations. Did Pac-12 make mistake not considering it for expansion years ago?
