  1. Five takeaways from Oregon's first two days of spring practice The first glimpse of Oregon's 2023 football roster came last week, as the program held its first two practices of spring. The team now goes on a two-week break (here's an explanation for why) before reconvening on April 4. Media was able to watch about 18 minutes from both workouts and Dan Lanning spoke following each session as well. These practice opportunities offered limited information but enough to draw some early conclusions. Below are the five things I found most interesting from the opening of spring practice. 3. LOOK: Recruits Visit Eugene as Oregon Kicks off Spring Practice Dan Lanning and the Ducks hosted some of their top targets this past week. Recruiting never stops in college football, which is why Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have a detailed approach for talent acquisition. While the on-field product got a lot of attention last week with the start of spring practice, the Ducks used that as an opportunity to showcase their program and what they're building. https://www.heraldonline.com/sports/college/article273368805.html#storylink=rss

  6. There is an interesting debate that’s taken place over the past few years when it comes to high school prospects who continue to take recruiting visits to other schools after they’ve already announced their verbal commitment. It’s understandably a topic of conversation that has some real pros and cons, depending on which side of the fence you stand. On the one hand, some people feel that a prospect, although verbally committed somewhere, should have the opportunity to get out and see as many schools as they can to make sure that they are confident in the choice that they’ve made. As a coach, I suppose it makes sense that you’d want to feel confident that your player is 100% confident in their decision to come to your school. On the other hand, it feels completely fair that a coach wouldn't want a player who is committed to his team having eyes for other schools. Many would argue that if you still have an interest in looking at other schools, then you may have committed too early in the first place. More mentioned in article below with Lanning's philosophy on the matter. 7. Social Media Buzz: Top recruits, transfer portal players react to weekend visits at Oregon As spring football got going again for the Oregon Ducks this past week, we saw the activity pick up around campus as the recruiting staff got to work and hosted some highly-rated recruits. There were some top high school prospects on campus, like 5-star CB Bryce West and 4-star S Aaron Flowers, as well as USC transfer WR Gary Bryant. While it’s always important to get these types of players to Eugene in the fall so that they can experience gamedays at Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning told me on Thursday that it’s just as important, if not more so, to get them on campus to see practices as well. “Our best pitch in recruiting is when people come and watch that practice and they see the way we work,” Lanning said. “They see how we develop talent and they see how much our guys enjoy practice. So it’s really important for us to take advantage of this beautiful place. Get people here where they can experience it firsthand and see it for themselves.” After the weekend was over, a lot of those players took to social media to reflect on their visit, Oregon Recruiting: Top prospects rave after weekend visit to Eugene DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Some top-rated recruits and high-profile transfer portal players were in Eugene this weekend. 8. Dylan Raiola, Top College Football Recruit, Sets Visits: What to Expect Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 quarterback in the 2024 college football recruiting rankings, is expanding his horizons with more scheduled trips this month. 10. Conference sounds tired of the noise. (When you go on Canzano's site to read article, if you get a pop up you should be to click on 'Continue Reading' to see the whole article.) The conference’s public-relations strategy in the last nine months has been puzzling. The silence in Las Vegas last week at the men’s basketball Pac-12 Tournament, in particular, fueled another round of fear-mongering click bait from the Big 12 footprint. I wondered why commissioner George Kliavkoff refused to hold a news conference. But industry insiders cautioned me against banging my shoe too hard on the table. I was told by more than one veteran media-world source that ESPN, FOX, Amazon and Apple likely appreciate that the Pac-12 hasn’t engaged in orchestrated leaks aimed at taking the negotiations public. Decide for yourself if the collateral damage to the Pac-12’s brand over the last nine months is an acceptable byproduct. If the conference gets a good deal, maybe the Pac-12 walks taller knowing it did so while refusing to play a less-dignified version of the PR game. Notable quotes from Dan Lanning following Oregon's first spring practice The second year of Dan Lanning’s tenure in Eugene with the Oregon Ducks officially started on Thursday morning, with the team taking the field for their first spring practice of the year. It’s a season that has some high expectations from fans and the college football world at large, with quarterback Bo Nix coming back for one final season, boasting aspirations of being named a Heisman Trophy finalist when all is said and done After notching 10 wins in his first year with the Ducks, Lanning knows that he will need a strong second act in order to keep the momentum rolling in Eugene. As the Ducks continue to work towards the annual spring game on April 29th, we got a chance to catch up with the head coach following the first of 15 practices. 20. If no one did not see this article and interview that goes along with the other articles. Here it is from Mark Harlan. Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan: I Am Tired Of Outside Forces Creating Narratives Involving Utah, Our Conference SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Athletic Director Mark Harlan joined Unrivaled on Wednesday afternoon to set the record straight regarding the on-going Pac-12 media rights negotiations and why he’s tired of outside forces creating narratives. The Pac-12 has been surrounded by rumors of “sure demise” since USC and UCLA announced their intention to leave the Conference of Champions after this upcoming football season, last summer. One of the main rumors consistently reported on in the last eight months has been that Utah, ASU, Arizona, and Colorado are in talks to join the Big 12. Last week, we put out an article challenging that notion based on conversations had with reliable sources around the situation. Harlan joined Scott Mitchell and Alex Kirry on the heels of this interview from ASU President Michael Crow, further cementing that the Utes are staying put in the Pac-12, and the remaining members are committed and close to signing a deal they are happy with. We’ve Always Had A Plan Harlan started out by saying he and the rest of his colleagues have never not been clear in their intent to stick together as 10 to form a plan that worked for everyone. He further explained that forging a deal of this nature with all the moving parts and people to please is hard and takes time. “I’ve been clear all along- the other schools in our conference have been clear all along that we’re together,” Harlan said. “We’re 10. We’ve said it. We’re working hard with our commissioner to get this deal done. It’s a complicated deal. There is structure and high expectations with ADs and certainly the presidents and chancellors for the commissioner to nail this thing so we can march forward.” Harlan continued by hinting the Pac-12 has never been on anyone else’s timetable, and therefore outsiders have taken liberties in their reporting on what is going on. It reached a point, according to Harlan where he felt like he had to say something, hence, the now infamous, “Give me a break,” Tweet. “Because we aren’t hitting certain people’s expectations of time and outside forces, people start chipping away,” Harlan said. “They start creating things like ‘Four Corners’ and whatever comes up. Whatever causes the clicks- whatever it might be. So yes. I read an article by a writer that I actually have great respect for in Dennis Dodd, but the article had a bunch of things that weren’t true.” There is a Podcast interview in with the write up. 21. What's the season-defining game for each Top 25 team next season? From the opening week matchups of blue bloods to the November conference battles defining the college football landscape, a season-defining game can come at any point. Last season, fans were treated to Ohio State outlasting Notre Dame, Georgia announcing its intention of winning back-to-back titles with a 49-3 rout of Oregon, and Florida State reasserting its place in the top 25 all within the first week of action. Of course these were followed up with Tennessee's defeat of Alabama, Georgia's rout of Tennessee and Michigan's second straight statement against Ohio State on the way to the College Football Playoff. A season-defining game can be previously circled on the calendar for months or come out of nowhere in college football but these are the ones our writers have their eyes on for each Way-Too-Early Top 25 team this upcoming fall. 22. Predicting who the fourth Pac-12 expansion candidate could be There is still one mystery program that is viewed as a Pac-12 expansion candidate Not sure if this was ever posted. Interesting take why Kevin Borba logically thinks the fourth mystery school could be either Tulane or Rice to go along with the other three candidates SDSU, SMU, Colorado Stste. 25. Five freshmen who hardly played in 2022 who could be big in 2023 Dan Lanning didn't play true freshmen much a season ago. That allowed the majority of Oregon's 2022 signing class to redshirt with only five members avoiding it. Regardless of Lanning's desire to play true frosh, every season second-year players develop into contributors. That's an annual tradition everywhere. Because of the lack of playing time a year ago, it's a bit difficult to peg five players from the 2022 cycle who are ready to take a step this season, but, I've done my best to identify a few I think have a chance to play bigger roles in year two than in year one. This list is obviously not exhaustive, and I'm not including Josh Conerly Jr., who appeared in all 13 games a season ago. The other 16 frosh are fair game though. There are several others I'm not including in my five who I could see being factors during the 2023 season as well.
