  1. Good to hear. It’s one thing to celebrate a score or big play with your mates.

But watching guys celebrate big plays when behind, taunt others for one little play, celebrate big tackles on a negative play and talk trash are all weak.

MC was a lot better than WT but the play didn’t always match the attitude.

  2. Several people said the players loved Mario. Agreed. However, there’s an aspect that keeps popping up in player interviews.

Present players are intimating at a much improved culture and cohesiveness and football now being fun again, suggesting that it wasn’t a tight team under MC. I Think there’s meat on those bones. The Steaks are ahead.

Mario was a net benefit to Oregon and if the Ducks are successful this year, he deserves some credit. I’m both thankful for his tenure and not at all unhappy that he’s now in Miami. Like others the way it went down was the issue.

I expect better cohesion effort and preparedness from kickoff. I expect better motivation and WHY. MC Ducks were slow starters. I expect a faster more aggressive dynamic big play offense and an aggressive multiple look defense that creates lots of exciting big plays, takeaways, and opportunities for the offense. Speed length size and ability will matter most and the talented will find the field as soon as ready.

  3. Considering what multiple players had to say about the difference between staffs and present culture, I suspect the Ducks will be more cohesive, more explosive, play harder and faster and go for the jugular early. They seem excited.

It sounds like the team chemistry and the motivation of the players is better than recent years.

More talent, better schemes, better coaching. Good things ahead for Duck fans.

  4. Bo Nix can be argued either way.

This read is sobering but college football history is also replete with examples of guys that underperformed and subsequently turned it up and played better in later years. Let us hope Bo fits in that group.

This years Duck QB competition will speak to many issues, the talent coaching and growth of several very talented physically gifted but different QBs.

Whether the coaches can coach them and make the offense run with good play calling will determine some of the QBs fate.

Dilly may have the tallest order on the team in remaking an offense and finding immediate long term stability at QB and one guy capable of starting and entire season.

Lots of Hope lots of questions.

If there was ever a year to win at least 10 wins to continue the brand....this is the year.  To me the two biggest components (beyond the excellent suggestions you made) are winning big now, and the confidence exuded by our head coach about the Oregon Brand, and how it will be strong no matter the conference.

If you say it with confidence, it is reassuring, and then when you win big--you confirm it.  Do that, and much of the rest will fall into place, IMHO.

                              Just WIN Baby!

    giphy.gif

Agreed. Winning solves everything. Can’t keep undefeated or popular teams off television and the Ducks are a top ten Brand. Historical prowess and legacy aside, the Ducks are popular now and if they get back to winning and scoring lots of points there won’t be problems.

  6. I don’t count the Ducks out in the ATL v Georgia.

Veteran offensive line and QB, an abundance of skill, talent, and a new higher powered offense coupled with a experienced talented front seven and aggressive defense going against a talented but newly replaced and reshuffled Georgia defense while the offense comes out with several replacements on an offensive line that protects a shorter less mobile QB.

I don’t see a 17.5 disparity in talent and having come off of a victory in Columbus don’t think many Ducks will feel intimidated. If the Duck coaches can coach the talent is there.

If the Ducks manage a victory in Georgia anything is possible going forward.  If not BYU looks awfully big.

How many losses is unacceptable? 3,4? Am I spoiled AND delusional? Are we there yet? I have to go to the bathroom? How much loooonger? 99 bottles of 🤦🏻‍♂️🤪

Congrats to the young man. It is time to move on from the stars and ratings. He is a Duck, and it is about developing and becoming a Belitnikoff award winner, along with bringing a title to the program.

I get the focus on stars, but not the attention on the minutiae. Does he have potential, then sign him, and develop him. Who cares about the star ratings as they become the Ducks.

When there is too much focus on the star ratings a kid can become more obsessed about that accomplishment rather than the long game. Turning a 5* rating into college awards, and an NFL career isn't a sure thing. We don't want student athletes on the sideline sitting there saying, 'but I was a 5* recruit, everyone loved me when I signed!'

I would actually like to see him lowered to a 3* before he comes to campus and be pissed off. I love it when you see a kid play and you can almost see the chip on his shoulder, it is so big.

Agreed. It’s also one of the best aspects of collegiate football. Kids growing into men. Mariota Herbert 3*  recruits. 5* only got Kamatule in the door.

One of the greatest Ducks to ever play the game of foot ball; Patrick Chung, was a 2*

  8. I’m a believer that THE best way to respect someone life is to emulate the good things they embodied and energy they put forth.

By all public accounts Spencer Webb was a good human being, a good friend, family member, teammate, and one who lived life to its fullest potential and without reservation. I am sad.

I respect everything Charles Fischer has done and continues to do with this wonderful site filled with good people but do wonder what this young man would say about pausing out of grief.

This is NOT criticism. Simply a reminder that every one of us could be gone in an instant and living fully like he did, to me, is the best tribute to any person life.

With less FishDuck to feed my addiction, I plan to honor this young man by working harder, getting fitter, being kinder, and calling everyone I love and reminding them that I do in FACT love them.

That includes you Charles Fischer and the entire beloved Duck community. Love you all. Go Ducks and Rest In Peace Spencer Webb, you will be missed

  9. Brings back sad memories of starting Guard Jesse Nash drowning in the willamette river below the foot bridge in 1987.
I’ve been a calculated risk taker my entire adult life. I’ve missed those calculations several times and come eerily close to not being here.  perhaps only by the grace of God I’m still here.

There are no words to ease the pain. Only sorry sadness and the passage of time. Prayers for all who knew and loved him.

  10. Understood ideally you recruit your guys develop them and they stay.

However, when the dealer offers another card sometimes your hand just isn’t what you want and you don’t want to bluff.

The transfer portal is the new game, it’s weird, potentially divisive, could drive good talent away for playing time  but also provides some flexibility if one isn’t convinced one has enough of the right Jimmys and Joes.

Transfer portal and NIL are a serious work in progress and the NCAA could screw up a wet dream so sit back and watch them destroy what was for what some greedy People think will make them more money.

They will be ready, prepared and expecting a fight. It's a top 25 matchup against their former Defensive Coordinator and in their own backyard

Agreed, I may have misstated in what I meant by TRAP game. Not that Georgia will overlook the Ducks but a TRAP game in terms of cohesiveness polish and consistency with so many new starters on the Georgia defense and it being their first game as well.

If the DillyO is ready the Ducks may get more opportunity than if the game was number two three or beyond.

Now the very same can be true of the Ducks with so much more change in o many areas, but the Ducks we’re a very talented team last year that underperformed likely because of poor coaching and an utterly boring and ineffective offense.

im cautiously optimistic but not convinced Bennet can carry Georgia if pressured unless they run wild.

but you are likely quite correct in thinking they will not overlook this game. Cheers !

  12. This years offensive talent is physically different.

The Ducks started guys at WR who weren’t fast or tall. Williams wasn’t a burner and was 6’3”. The others short slow and not very big. Same at RB. Not particularly fast or big.

This season will display multiple receivers and TEs 6’4” and 6’5” and others at 6’”3”. A couple of which have much better speed.

Add in scheme changes and we may well see 5 pass catchers lining up all over 6’4”!  Not too many DB and LB corps can match that size. At minimum a Red Zone threat.

I suspect the TEs will catch more passes and play action from under center will speed things up and create opportunities for separation behind a solid line and improved QB play supported by a coaching philosophy more productive than wrecking ball from a seven yard pistol with 5’9” 195lb RBs.

  13. It all starts with Georgia. That is the most important game if we must choose one. Uncle Chuck is correct. Every game matters and even one loss likely derails title hopes.

However, Georgia is a measuring stick for many things about Oregon football.

Lanning and the other coaches, can they coach, develop, motivate, and scheme?

Can Lanning and coaches make in game adjustments?

Do our Jimmy’s and Joe’s compare favorably to Georgia’s fairly well known talent?

I think the Ducks are well positioned to win this game for a number of reasons.

They physical attributes of our overhauled WR and RB room are diametrically opposite to last years starters. Speed size and length are all increased, which combined with a more experienced TE room likely creates scenarios unavailable last season, like 5 pass catchers over 6’3 at one time.

The return of Justin Flowe and Defensive front improvements. Yes KT is gone but Taki and others should help slow the run game and give the LB something to feed on.

Georgia represents a huge opportunity and is a likely trap game for Georgia.

Overconfidence and with an immobile short quarterback who will need perfect protection and replacing many many starters which no matter how talented likely leads to missed assignments and opportunity.

I’d take 17, I might even bet the Ducks straight up. To me, Georgia sets the tone for it all and is critical is validating the off-season of massive change. It’s THE most important game for THE Oregon Ducks just like beat THE team last year could have been had there not been so much Cri$tobull$hit towards the end of the season.

  14. I’m starting to think the way to best the money game is best them with the money game.

Push the boundaries of NIL to get the Jimmy’s and Joe’s.

Tailor a  scholarship “Football degree” to be focused around generating NIL monies while class work centers on basic financial competence financing debt and wealth management investment strategy business marketing and mentors student athletes to build wealth while getting multiple degrees over 5 years of football in preparation for and beyond the possibility of any NFL career.

Sell the recruits on the path that includes THE best and continuing to get better Football facilities.

Sell the recruits on knowing they will make money, learn to manage and invest it, grow it and leave college with the possibility of multiple degrees and an investment portfolio while playing for one of the top competitive football programs in the nation.

Up the ante and start making Oregon football graduates the most wealthy football graduates in the nation.

Football Alumni too. If they want to make it about the money. Create real lasting financial growth for recruits coming to Oregon.

In the Pac12, USC struggled to get to a bowl game. They haven't been competitive in 2 decades. What makes the B?G think USC is a golden ticket. Just a ploy to suck ND into the B?G. After ND joins, the scarlet carpet will be pulled out from under USC.

Riley has proven nothing yet. He has 2 years to show USC is the cream of the west coast. Right now, they are not. USC will be Wisconsin 2.0. But that is still better than what they have been able to accomplish in the Pac for years.

Dumping two new high powered offenses into the defensive run oriented big too many conference should produce some bitter losses to the top teams. More risk than reward.

In my opinion USC and UCLA moving out of the PAC presents an opportunity for Oregon to absolutely dominate southern california recruiting.

It’s an interesting point I was pondering myself, seeing Oregon in the eyes of now being a Clemson West.

Be Dominant in a weaker conference.

We may just stand pat at 10, dominate, and be just fine.

Go undefeated and just win. The money will always come in when you dominate.

Play the SEC way, and switch to 8 conference games, 4 out of conference with a patsy on week 10 or 11 to rest some guys.

Make NIL millionaires, but put the kids in financial programs to teach investing and money management including family educational outreach for help dealing with agents business deals and hanger ons. Make Oregon players the wealthiest most business savvy college football players in the nation.

Sell the Ducks as the program that can get you to the NFL and get rich before you get there and stay rich after.

Out recruit, out coach, keep winning and Dominate while the Big too many conference struggles to have undefeated teams at the end of the season.
