Charles Fischer Administrator No. 1 Share Posted August 12 Just saying... Remember when Cristobal first came here and we were delighted with all the true "inside" stuff he gave us from scrimmages and practices? Remember how that all changed over time, as he learned the ways of being a top-20 program? It all became mush later, with nothing informative from his press conferences. Lanning has learned the same thing. See the thread below concerning practices, and see the what he actually stated in his press conference about the scrimmage. What did he tell you? Nothing. So, he has learned his lesson well, and this is why we at FishDuck do NOT have a writer at the silly press conferences. 1) Because there are already 20 sites there, and 2) because the coaches rarely tell you anything beyond the "blah-blah." Charles Fischer "fishing" for information over a dozen years ago... (Wasted time) Been there, done that. If you read it carefully with years of experience...what do you take from it? 1) Did he laud ANYONE in the scrimmage? No. He is not happy. 2) Did he specify either the offense or defense on anything? No. You have to look, not just between the lines, but what he did NOT say. Did he praise anyone? Either side of the ball? "I want to watch film first." When did that ever stop him from praising players or the offense/defense/special teams before? Bottom line? That was a ton of feel-good, blah-blah about a scrimmage he was actually displeased with. But the typical fan would not know it. You guys know I love Lanning and what he is doing here, but that....sucks. David Marsh No. 2 Share Posted August 12 I used to watch these interviews religiously. I can sometimes pick something up from them but the coaches have gotten better at saying nothing than ever before. One of the reasons I liked Cristobal so much early on at Oregon was that he was pretty honest with questions. You got an insight into the team and if you could read between the lines a bit there were some gems. By the time he left Oregon he was cranky with the questions, said nothing and was pretty rude about it. Lanning says nothing with a smile on his face... So that's nice at least. Augduck No. 3 Share Posted August 12 I don't get too worked up over this. It seems to be norm in college football. Saban was the master of coach speak and Kirby is the same way so it's easy to see how Dan learned from them. I think fans in general get it and understand why coaches do it. MicroBurst61 No. 4 Share Posted August 12 Insights into opposing teams strategies, along with said organizations own perceived strengths and weaknesses, can give a Huge advantage on and off the field. (Defending Michigan National Champions are currently under the "scope" for sign-stealing). I remember the years before Chip took over as HC when you could watch the players practice when visiting the Duck store at Autzen. Also remember one of Chips first priorities as Head Coach was window filming those very said windows to prevent any advantage of his "blur" offense from getting out. Point being, press and fans want information to "cuss and discuss" about their fan favorite team. Those same teams are looking for every competitive advantage they can harness and will feel no shame in gathering information about an opponent, while at the same time holding close to their vests any information about their own team. So, CoachSpeak is expected from any program. And it will Not change anytime soon. But, we still gotta ask! Cause how did that ad campaign go for that national "rag" magazine back in the late 90's-turn of the century? "Inquiring minds...want to know. Uh... yeah. Obviously, I've dealt with it for years and it is too bad for the fans. The press conferences--the write-ups are a waste of time for all involved. Washington Waddler Moderator No. 6 Share Posted August 12 It doesn’t take long to understand why not to share useful information equally with media and opposing programs. I like to watch the post-practice blurbs just to see the controlled smile on Lanning’s face which suggests a man caught somewhere between a blind date gone south, and a guy who hasn’t seen the head in over four hours.
DanLduck No. 7 Share Posted August 12 Thanks Charles for putting a fine point to it. The Mrs. & I were just discussing this very point. As fans we are so excited to see fall practice start. It means the games are soon to follow. But it's a really slow month for news. Recruiting is shut down. All the boys are now on campus and practicing. And all we fans get is coachspeak. It's sort of funny. I will try and guess what the article says before I read it, cuz it's usually the same. Oh well. I do like watching the players interviews after practice. It's a chance to see more then a number. Getting to put a face on him. I do appreciate that.
Drake Moderator No. 8 Share Posted August 12 I can’t say I blame coaches for “coach speak”. The number, and types of questions asked have to become a blur over the course of a season, much less a career. The other part of that is some reporters ask really dumb questions. I think fans like to know about injuries incurred, and the potential outlook for an injured player to return, but that information is somewhat guarded. Recovery is not an exact science, and the severity may really not be known at the time. The main reason I watch some of the interviews is to get a feel for the coaches, and players personalities. It is always easier to be more personable after a win vs. any loss. 1

And it isn't just the coaches. Even players mostly manage to say nothing or say the same yada, yada, yada. But with the players I try to get a fix on their personality. Are they enjoying what they do? Do they look confident? I wish that we could have more of the players talk about their team mates, not just themselves ... and see whether their eyes light up at some of the things other players are able to do.
