It's already past Midnight in Miami now for more than one reason.

Skippin to the end here and will read and react to this thread tomorrow if it is still up. Had a chat with my dear Duck buddy before the game who is also a MLB baseball fan. His assessment pre-games was that this was a blah Saturday with few if any games of any consequence so that he would be checking in on the Georgia game but concentrating on baseball playoffs. I reminded him that I had been a baseball player who had had an opportunity to play professionally (I'd have never made it very far) but was not going to waste a perfectly good football Saturday watching a game that is exciting only in spurts.

IMHO, this turned out to be One of the more exciting college football Saturdays that this witness, undoubtedly one of the oldest viewers on this forum have ever witnessed. All day long upsets ( from A&M's beast mode with Missouri through the Vandy stunner and Arky's thrilling takedown of Tennessee (but thankfully not my Dawgs). Last I looked Cal was handed it to Cristobal's boys 21-10 and every league had a surprise or two it seems. Have to follow this as I get into bed with my novel. Looking forward to digesting all your thoughts in the morning.

P.S. I had fun posting all the updates all day to my baseball watching Duck buddy. Yes, we are very good friends and he wasn't offended--in fact invited me to meet up for lunch on Monday.

I'm watching Miami-Cal right now. And MC is doing one of the same things he did at Oregon. He's letting the clock go down to 10 or less seconds regularly when he really needs to preserve the clock. I am so glad we upgraded to DL.

Okay, Miami has the ball, trails 38-32. Needs a TD, starts at the 7. First play gets them to Cal's 15.

Miami is NOT a top 10 team.

Their two wins against Virginia Tech and Cal, the only two P4 teams they've ayed that don't have losing records but barely so, brought them down to the wire and put over 30 points on them.

Miami's stats are padded by cupcakes right now.

Cal lost a 25 point lead.

Refs didn’t do that.

They built the lead with passing downfield and screens.

It’s like a mind virus that they move from what built the lead once they get the lead.

Started running into the Miami DL which is formidable.

WHY GO AWAY FROM WHAT WAS CARVING UP MIAMI?

Was really hoping to see angry Cristbal post game conference; ruined my evening.

I understand when a team blows a lead, there often are posts like, "the refs didn't blow an X point lead" but

when the game comes down to a single play that ends the game for the team blowing the lead and they hold on to their win?

And the refs blatantly (and quite possibly unethically - as in the ACC refs instructing the outcome from an office somewhere - which protects the team that has the most financial beneficial to them to do so) erase the game winning play in favor of the team that just lost?

Yes, in this instance in fact the refs did take a win away from one team and give it to another on one play. All Cal's blowing it in the last 19 minutes didn't matter because they actually did finally make a play which won them the game.

And arguably it wasn't even a single play. In the post-game discussion over on Reddit, there are four plays in the final minutes of the game that all favored Miami (which was the road team).

For those who have never watched it or otherwise are unfamiliar, take a look at the final seconds of the 1972 Olympic basketball final, where the refs replayed the final three seconds of the gold metal game three times, after the USSR lost the game the first two times.

The US team, which had won seven gold metals in a row with a 63-0 all time Olympic record, to this day has never accepted its silver metals, despite seval attempts by the OIC to get them to do so, with even one member, Kenny Davis, having it written in his will forbidding his wife, children, or descendents from ever accepting the metal on his behalf.

40 years after the game Davis put together a reunion of the team members and they unanimously voted to continue to reject the metals stating simply, "By the rules of the game, we won."

If allowed to regularly pass with comments like, "the refs didn't lose the game", possibly leads college football even further down the same path.

Judgment calls are one thing, blatantly swallowing whistles and not making obvious calls to protect a favored team to alter the outcome, quite another.

College football needs to do away with conference officials. All college officials should be NCAA officials to reduce these potential biases. The NFC South does not have their own officials.

If you throw out the traditional brand names, Oregon has a tougher strength of schedule with a win against a potential playoff team. Luckily, most voters do not agree with you.  Miami should have one or two losses, if the officials did not intervene.

Miami certainly has no one on their schedule tougher than Oregon’s next opponent. That’s not even debatable.

I think I agree with that.

I’m trying to balance things in my mind, and play devil’s advocate to every idea/opinion I, and others, have.

If Oregon played Miami next week and won, what perspective should we take?

The established one that Miami is nothing and has played no one and has only won because of the refs. As such, Oregon shouldn’t move up in the polls?

OR

Big statement win over a top 10 ten team that firmly establishes Oregon as a National Championship contender. And suddenly we start arguing Miami is better than we thought.

Honestly some of my favorite parts of college football are the mental gymnastics from all fans.

When I tuned in after the end of Georgia-Auburn, I did so because I knew this Vandy team was no pushover. The previous game with Missouri (in Missouri, I believe) was ample evidence of that. First thing I saw was very little red in the main stands. Usually when Georgia or Alabama play in Nashville, the stands are predominantly red as the visiting fans take over the place. So the Vandy fans had bought in.

I then watched Bama pull within 5 with several minutes to go. I thought two first downs and it is over. Then I watched Vandy come to the line and play the kind of smash-mouth football I had rarely ever seen out of them. Of course we know the result.

Vandy has become a decent football team and, if they can keep this coach from being hired away, they have a chance to remain relevant. I am not kidding myself here. If Bama and Vandy played 10 times, the Tide would win eight or nine of them. But not on this day, and games like this one is one of the things that makes college football great.

Welcome to the SEC Kalen DeBoer!

If Oregon played Miami, or any other team, the higher ranked they are, the better an Oregon win would look. I agree that one does a workout going through all this. My deal with Miami though is I see their ranking as clear example of college football being taken over by Entertainment driven forces.

Miami is a story, now the officiating controversy adds even more to that. Fortunately, their ranking is just annoying so far.

If we apply the same standard used to critique Miami’s schedule (ie, they’ve played no one), has Boise St. beat anyone that should make us believe they’re something special?

I'd say BSU losing on the road to No. 3 UO on the last play of the game looks better than Miami's seven minute review reversing a game losing TD and surviving Cal Couging it. I think what saves Mario's bacon in the polls this week  is that everybody behind him 9-11 all lost badly. So far it looks to me like the ref's are doing the best prop up job for Mario I've seen since A Weekend at Bernie's.

I don't think Miami would beat Boise State... I don't think they'd lose badly either but I don't think that's a guaranteed win.

I think if Miami played Oregon's schedule they'd beat Idaho, Oregon State, UCLa, and Michigan State... But I'm not sure on Boise. That one would be close.

Miami also doesn't have any ranked opponents currently on their schedule. Louisville lost and fell out of the rankings. Louisville is probably the hardest opponent left on their schedule as well.
