30Duck No. 2 Share Posted October 20 Oh yes, Joel Klatt, figured OBD would have trouble at Purdue but U$C would take care of Maryland. Hindsight is 20/20 and those calls look blurry. The Ducks continued what they've been doing and so did the Trojans. The Boilermakers and Trojans are slug-ing it out for 12th place with UCLA, Rutgers, Marylan and Northwestern, while the Ducks, Buckeyes, Hoosiers and Nittany Lions fight it out for the championship. 1 2 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Haywarduck Moderator No. 3 Share Posted October 20 That was a great win, but the last time we were ranked #1 we lost at home, the next week. The trap game is often the game you don't think is a trap game. We are going to have a big bullseye on our backs and we better realize it before Saturday. As far as our Ducks we still haven't hit on all cylinders, so the season continues to progress. The problem is we still haven't hit on all cylinders and need to progress, and stay hungry. Fortunately DG has even more potential, even as a top Heisman candidate. I look for Stein to continue to create even better plays for Dillon to have outlet passes when the risky play isn't a good decision. I also look for the receivers to get even better separation, and make even more elite catches. Progress on offense has to continue. James is definitely upping is game each week. The one area of concern is the kicking game. Once again the kick-off out of bounds has reared its ugly head. That shouldn't happen again the rest of the season. I don't watch a lot of football, but I don't see elite teams missing kickoffs. You might as well aim at a guy ten yards out every time if you are going to kick it out of bounds. I guess what I am saying is I hope the team sees the areas they can improve upon. 7-0 is great, but we aren't even half way there. This team needs to stay insatiable in their quest to get better, win it all. 30Duck No. 4 Share Posted October 20 (edited) Hayward, out of your post, which I agree with completely, the area I'm least worried about is the Ducks having the target on their backs. Lanning is the perfect coach for Oregon to have at this moment. He knows first hand how a team needs to handle being No.1. It's why he came to Oregon and what he wants to build here. Desert Duck No. 6 Share Posted October 20 Following one of the biggest, emotional, and hard fought victories in Oregon history, for OBD to hop on a plane a few days later, travel 2,400 miles, on a short week, and shut out any team 35-0 is just damn impressive. I don't care that Purdue pretty much stinks. They are working him in for occasional Field Goals, PATs, and Kick-offs for a variety of reasons, IMHO. First, in case of injury to Sappington, second--to promote his own NFL resume and let him show he can still kick, and finally to let Sappington know that there is competition if missed FGs and PATs continue. A kick-off OOB at garbage time by Boyle did not hurt us, but I agree with your point--we can't do that. But it is part of Dan's roster-building, I believe. Unlike prior coaches who would play-down to their opponent, or simply let one get away that shouldn't, (Yeah, I'm thinking of Stanford over the years) this coach has the players mentally ready. That stadium was packed with a Black-out, and they had hope after scoring 49 points the week before. This was never in doubt, and I salute the staff being so ready. BTW...how bizarre is this? --Purdue goes from scoring 49 to zero! Or... --Illinois gives up 49 points, and then holds Michigan to seven? Andrew Boyle I'll give him kudos for the onside bullet kick off the tosu guy. That will be a legendary kick for years to come, and I hope he can pull that one off again. Charles, I agree, and I believe the difference is DL’s FEBU mentality that OBD are always playing themselves. That mindset of continuous improvement. OBD are locked in on doing better than we did last week, that 1% improvement from yesterday. The opponent doesn’t matter. Improve your game, whether is is against yourselves, or a faceless opponent. The offense is far from playing mistake free football in any game. As a matter of fact, it seems like our offensive hiccups energizes our defense.
