Riley is Making a Change at USC

Recommended Posts

First, there wasn't any need for changing anything, now the change that is made, won't change anything.

Wow.  Shame on me for not realizing that Miller Moss was like Travis Hunter and played offense AND defense!

Shame on Miller Moss for giving up 370+ yards per game on defense!

All along I have heard that LR is such a quarterback whisperer.  Is Miller Moss just not listening?  It COULDN'T be LR, could it???

Riley is a standup guy. Not!

If the new QB is not substantially better than Moss, then Riley will have destroyed his last claim to fame of being a QB whisperer, having unnecessarily thrown a QB under the bus. That will not go over well with elite recruits with options.

The only change that will help USC is changing the head coach. He is a complete overpaid failed hire.

Another dud brought on by the lofty pretentious overpaid USC admin staff that can't seem to figure out whether a guy can coach.

Moss has made some mistakes and been inconsistent, but overall hasn't played that poorly. Putting him on he bench won't fix a defense that has squandered leads late in games or extinguish the dumpster fire that U$C has become.

It is clear that Riley is willing to abandon his players in the interest of shifting blame and saving his own arse. Witness what he did earlier in the season at a post-game presser when he dissed one of his DBs after a reporter asked a question. Recruits and current players will respond to this attitude as one might anticipate.

The contrast with DL couldn't be more stark.

Moss's mother posted a quote from former United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower that reads, "The search for a scapegoat is the easiest of all hunting expeditions"

USC Trojans coach Lincoln Riley reportedly benched quarterback Miller Moss in favor of Jayden...

Once you've pissed off mom, you have pretty much lost that kid and any recruit that's paying attention.

Dear USC, please don't fire Lincoln Riley.  Just keep making subtle changes and you'll eventually get it right - even if it takes 12-15 years.

A contrarian point of view.

LR is one of the winningest (by win %) active FBS coaches; ranked #6 amongst names like Day, Smart, Cignetti, Lanning, DeBoer, Dabo, etc.

I don't believe you make it on that list by sheer luck and happenstance.

Re: LR as a QB whisperer . . . let me share a scripture from cartm25 3:16 - "Let he who has developed 3 (or more) Heisman QBs cast the first stone."

No idea if he'll ultimately take USC to the level they want. Honestly, if he acts like Helton and gives enough hope each year for excellence while being mediocre, I kind of like that for Oregon's recruiting sake.

Dabo took 7-8 years to develop a program that ultimately regularly challenged and beat the Bamas of the world.

I'm only suggesting not acting too hastily due to his excellent track record of winning.

My counterpoint is that he won most of those games in the weak B12 and lost the vast majority of big games.

Murray, Mayfield, Williams were all incredibly talented QB's, Riley was there. Miller Moss isn't up to their level, Riley is there, and Moss just got benched. NFL star, Herbert, didn't have great stats, now all of a sudden Ward at Miami is putting up Heisman level numbers. Easier for a coach to just get out of the way.

EXACTLY. He had a significant roster advantage in the B12 (like Jimbo Fisher had in the ACC) and dysfunction in Austin, Texas.

His teams outside of B12 play? 0-3 as a playoff head coach. 60+ points surrendered vs LSU and Joe Burrow. The guy who hired Riley was forced out, current AD Jen Cohen had nothing to do with the hire. College Station Fanatics came with oil money to buy out Jimbo. Is football that big of a thing today in South Central? Would SC boosters come up with at least $50M if Jen wanted to get rid of Riley? I don't believe that SC is committed to football like it once was.

Moss was nothing special at QB and kept throwing untimely interceptions. Maiva was very good at UNLV last season and he has better wheels than Moss. With the season down the drain after a huge opening win, Riley needs to see what he has in Maiva and if positive, keep Maiva out of the portal. Moss has another year of eligibility but he isn't the answer. Reilly tried to pick up Will Howard but SC's NIL program is JV compared to Ohio State, and Oregon.

SC needs to win 2 of the next 3 games against Nebraska, at UCLA, and Notre Dame l to be bowl-eligible. How fired up will SC players be to trip to El Paso or Shreveport or SoFi?

I think Cohen likely knows that SC needs a culture change and a recruiter like Danno but where is the money coming from to get rid of Riley and pay a new coach @$10M a year?

I feel so sorry for the first team to bail from the Pac-12. 😁

I think this is a fair point; however, I'm not sure what he could do other than play and beat the teams in his conference.

How should we define "big games"? Is that games against ranked teams? Top-25 or -10, or -5? Only Conference Championship games? Only playoff games? (counting only playoff games, nearly every coach would be labeled "can't win the big one" since so few actually made it to the 4-team playoff).

LR's Oklahoma team consistently beat multiple ranked (some very highly) opponents every year, including #2 tosu (like Oregon did this year) to propel themselves to the CFP.

In the CFP, LR is 0-3 . . . Against #3 GA, #1 Bama, and #1 LSU. I don't think a team in history could have beat that LSU team--Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson. Those are three of the best players in the NFL today.

I can't fault LR for not beating those teams. Those teams are among the historically great.

LR has a young offensive line. With another year and a better QB news of Riley’s death might be greatly exaggerated.

From what I understand, LR participated in some, or all, of the following for each QB:

- Identify the talent in high school

- Successfully recruit the talent

- Coach the talent

- Either tailor an offense to that QB's skills or identify the right QB to have success in his system

Re: Miller Moss, sometimes a coach misses; it happens.

Maybe a "QB Whisperer" comes in many forms: hands on coaching / offensive scheme / "get out of the way" and let the QB cook / all the above?

Lincoln did not recruit Miller Moss. Helton recruited Miller Moss. The guy who decided to portal into SC, Maiava, will get a start a week from Saturday. What does a 3-1 and not yet bowl-eligible SC have to lose?

Last Saturday in Seattle UWho had the No. 1 ranked pass D in CFB. UWho has a bad run D. Riley has a good RB in Woody Marks. Riley's game plan was to come out throwing. Senseless. Did he 'make' the Heisman-winning QBs or did he just get out of their way?

He's a jest who never won a big game outside of a conference where he had a roster advantage. SEE: Jimbo Fisher.

He is being paid $10M a year. There is no excuse for SC being under .500 with three games to play.

I don't think that Riley is a bad QB coach or OC. I do think he is a middling HC, recruiter, game manager and leader. And a really bad value given his salary and the inherent advantages he has at U$C.

Why the Timing Is Right for Miller to Gather Moss on the Bench.

TROJANSWIRE.USATODAY.COM

One reason for this USC quarterback switch from Miller Moss to Jayden Maiava really stands out. It reinforces why this was the right time to make the move.

I cop to pulling for SC to take the Domers, 4 games vs G5 teams and a 'bye' on conference champ weekend, out of the playoff.

I would have never gotten on that long board in the first place . . . and a crash was inevitable 🙂
