Where Were the Fighting Ducks?

The Rose Bowl was the most embarrassing game of Dan Lanning’s career. Even if Ohio State goes on to win the National Championship this year, this game will leave a sour taste in the entire Oregon community’s mouth. Unlike Lanning’s opening loss to Georgia in 2022, this one just stinks. Against that Georgia team, the Ducks were massive underdogs and ...

The Ohio State game reminds me of last year's Pac-12 Championship game.  Oregon just didn't show up, until it was too late.

Evan Stewart had been ailing and suffered an injury during pre-game warmups, so did not play.

Reminded me of that 2021 Pac-12 championship against Utah. That 38-10 loss was a disgusting disaster.

And like our game yesterday, from our first offensive series, you pretty much instinctively knew that we were likely screwed... even though you did not want to admit it while holding out some form of hope.

But at least Vegas was entertaining.

It reminded me of OBD's pasting of UW. No team in CFB was going to defeat that Ohio State team we saw in the Rose Bowl.

Obviously. the approach Dan and his friends took during the long waiting period did not work. DUH! It's speculation but if the Buckeyes tripped to the Rose Bowl with its final game being the Michigan upset would we have seen yesterday's tOSU team that played a HOME game vs. Tennessee and got its Mojo back?

CFB needs a Playoff and not a bowl extravaganza. When 3 of the top 4 seeds (possibly 4 of 4) open away from home and lose, something is wrong with the formatting including the top 4 seeds not having a home game with its fans forced to travel all over the country if their team advances. That's another DUH! It's one thing for the Chiefs and the 49ers to have a Bye week and then play at home up to the champ game and for college-aged players to sit out over a month and then play away from home.

Professionals with a one-week break do not forget how to block and tackle. College players with close to a month off on the other hand? ASU had the ball for two-thirds of the first half vs. Texas but could not score points. The will was there but not the efficiency before the rust wore off.

College football has sold the FBS to a media company and given equal voting power to Notre Dame and the G5. The obvious fixes to the format are not likely to be realized so long as ESPN is calling the shots and 'owns' the CFB postseason, through 2031-32.

Hats Off to Ohio State, the better team on 1/1/25. Come 8/30/25 and the season-opening game against an opponent that is odds on to remain undefeated, Montana State, some of the stink from the smell of bad roses will remain but FANATICS will be ready to move forward with the 2025 season.😎

Thanks, David. It's not easy to have to write the day-after obituary. 😒

Byes are no reward. Due to the holidays the ducks had almost a month off, it's too long. It was heartwarming to see ASU play so well. They did the old PAC proud and showed that they can play with the big boys. Although Texas is not that good. They will lose badly to OSU. The ducks are going to have to do some major soul searching. They need to evaluate what went wrong and fix those problems. Not an easy thing to do. On a positive note, our basketball team is playing a ranked team tonight at home. They are playing really well and fun to watch.

It is clear to me that Dan Lanning needs to go and we need to bring on Ted Lasso!

I don't believe that Dan Lanning has to go, this is my dry sense of humor.

Changing coaches does not accomplish anything. Oregon is as good as they are because they don't change coaches each time things go sour. Lanning is a young coach. He will learn and adapt.

Is it great for USC and its fans that Oregon got hammered? Yes. Still: It’s not right that a 13-0 team got the toughest draw of the top four playoff seeds.

The schedule was beyond the control of the players and coaches. The article above suggests that the layoff hurt Oregon, and that may be true.

I prefer to analyze football in terms of match-ups and schemes, but I want to consider this debacle from the perspective of sports psychology, which is one of the many elements of coaching

The psychology of baseball, the sport that I played, is entirely different than football. Baseball must be played with calm determination; football requires emotion. I say this as an observer, not a participant. I could certainly be wrong, not in the characterization, but in the weight that I am ascribing to this factor.

My point is this. When it was reported at 24/7 that Oregon was approaching the Rose Bowl as a "business trip," I felt uneasy. I understand that DL was looking at the situation as a 16 game season, in which his team could not afford to expend all its emotional resources on one game. The risk of this was that Oregon would come out flat and lacking in alertness when they faced their hardest test.

I wonder how much of the difference between October and yesterday was a result of the emotional state of the two teams, and how this manifested itself especially at the line of scrimmage.

It looked to me like Gabriel was indecisive yesterday, holding the ball too long and waiting too long before deciding to run with the ball.

Maybe that would have made the OSU defense back off a little bit. Oh well, it was a fun season anyway. Can't wait for next year!

But maybe we could bring in Lasso under the title of "Most Trusted Advisor."

Excellent article.

But after 5+ decades of this stuff, right now, I'm of the mindset of "Get back to me early to mid-December 2025 and let me know how we're doing."

The Buckeyes after some soul searching upon losing to Oregon and Michigan made big changes to both their offense and defense. They have evolved into their potential despite a diminished offense line. I believe Oregon is the second-best team in college. Going in I thought the winner of the game would go all the way. Still do.
