GatOrlando No. 1 Share Posted February 13 Two questions and some info. Would you support an Oregon hockey program now that you are in the B1G? Do you follow or know anybody that follows the sport? I think the closest NHL team is the Kraken in Seattle. I don't know if Portland has or ever has had an AHL or other minor league hockey squad. I bring this up because the Four Nations start tonight with Sweden vs Canada and the US vs Finland. I've gotten interested the last few years after watching the Olympics with a buddy. Those boys play hard and it's actually quite engaging if you ever go to a game. The Coyotes relocated to Utah this year but I found myself going to a few games before then and met some really cool people. The players and coaches were all very nice and engaging as well off the ice.
30Duck Moderator No. 2 Share Posted February 13 Between 1960 and 1974, the Portland Buckaroos were the most successful hockey team in professional hockey. Their success was due to several factors. The team owned the players' contracts, maintained continuity in its players and coaches, and had strong fan support. They were promoted by Harry Glickman & their play by play guy was the Schonz, both would later leave for Rip City! I will never forget "Do you believe in Miracles?" and I watch the Stanley Cup Final. I really don't wany Ovechkin to break Gretzky's scoring record.
Charles Fischer Administrator No. 3 Share Posted February 13 Don’t know a thing about Hockey, but respect those who grew up around it, and love it. I have to admit that I am often shocked to go on the Big Ten network and see really well covered telecasts of wrestling matches, and hockey games unlike you would ever see on the West Coast. Good-gosh, they are into high caliber volleyball and Lacrosse! Cool conference, and Oregon will bring glory to their weaknesses. (Baseball season is about to begin and Our Beloved Ducks are favored to win the conference) Being realistic, that with all the changes in college sports, and pending lawsuits, I don’t anticipate us ever adding hockey, and in fact, we will probably end up deleting sports before it is over, and ended up in court over that too! 1 Mr. FishDuck

Many thought hockey would never work in Florida but then the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers came along and both have won a Stanley Cup since 2020. I doubt we ever get one at the college level but you never know. I can see Portland as a potential expansion squad if Seattle proves successful. Heck Vegas has only been around eight years and they've become one of the greatest franchises in the NHL.

The B1G is the best and most prestigious conference in college. It has the oldest and best run network, the best funding among all the sports it supports and the best academic coalition in the country. The SEC has several schools that could never qualify for the B1G due academics alone. Missouri, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt are about the only ones that could qualify on the academic side. Pretty huge alumni and NIL bases in the B1G as well. DrJacksPlaidPants Moderator No. 12 Share Posted February 13 Yes. I love hockey. I'm a Dallas Stars fan, but I live in Canes country, so I find myself going to their games to appease my wife. IMHO it is the best spectator sport by a long shot. This is because there isn't a lot of stoppage and, of course, the "physicality". Portland has a WHL team that has been around since at least the 70's. They've even won a couple of championships (Memeorial Cup). They had a coach named Ken Hodge who was a NHL Hall of Fame player. He coached them for as long as I could remember through the 70's and 80's. I noticed that Oregon's club level hockey team is not allowed to wear the official Oregon Ducks "O" on their uniform. My guess is that Nike doesn't make their uniforms and since the "O" is trademarked by Nike they can't use it. 1

DanLduck No. 14 Share Posted February 13 I lived 10 years in B.C. I love hockey (and know how to drive in the snow!) We had season tickets to the Portland Winterhawks back in the 80's for a few years. Its a game much better enjoyed in person then watching on TV. As mentioned, it's doubtful our club team will become varsity, unless special monies come in, though they do have a faithful, energetic fan base. International hockey is the best because fighting leads to ejection, so more skating, better hockey. When the USA won in 1980, I was still living in Eugene. I was so jacked! I tried to get others interested at my work, but it was a hard sell. A great memory though. 1

I think the Vegas Strip may entice some people as well but they've now gotten a NHL, NFL and MLB team to move or begin there. French priests, trappers, fishermen, and hunters found the Indigenous peoples in 'New France' playing a game with sticks with netting at the end, to throw, catch, and advance a ball on foot. Games could last for days and cover miles of territory and games were used to settle tribal disputes. In the 1880s British soldiers brought with them to Canada a game called 'shinny' played on ice. This game was introduced to England by the Dutch and evolved into hockey which in French is a derivative of 'hoquet,' French for 'shepherd's crook.' When I had a stopover in the UK all the locals noted my accent. I've long lost any southern accent since I began going to different places and lived different places since I was twelve. Many don't associate Florida as a southern state but we definitely are. We just have a large group of transients living there. I definitely had a southern accent and am reminded of it every time I go back and talk with my family and friends that have never left.

Intravenus de Milo No. 42 Share Posted Saturday at 06:00 PM Definitely a hockey fan! My favorites in order: 1) NCAA FB 2) NFL 3) NHL (Columbus Blue Jackets) fun fact for everyone, the Blue Jackets name is a nod to Ohio’s Civil War importance. Quite a few Generals from OH (William Tecumseh Sherman!), but also there was a factory in central OH that made the uniforms for the Union. That’s also why you see the Civil War era canon fire after goals. I attended the home playoff games in 2019 where we beat Tampa and then lost to Boston and those games were second only to the 2006 OSU/Michigan game (1 vs 2) in terms of atmosphere and intensity. If you ever have the opportunity to attend an NHL playoff game, do yourself a favor and GO!!! 1 1
