Will The Coaching Carousel Kill Oregon’s CFP Chances?

Today marks the first of the early signing day period, but nothing hangs heavier on Oregon football’s future than the potential loss of both coordinators to head coaching jobs. Now, if there’s anything the Ducks have learned to deal with this season, it’s adversity. Our Oregon football program has been dealing with injuries all season, and forced to step up ...

Thanks Alex, your article today has to be on the minds of every Duck fan. For me, knowing how much time both Will Stein and Tosh Lupoi have spent with Dan Lanning, I'm not as worried as I was when Slick Willy and Mari-no-O bailed on the Ducks.

The culture that Coach Lanning has built is an important factor in my thinking. Both of these gentlemen have contributed to the making of the culture. Both have spent hours and hours with Dan coaching, recruiting, and being together. I believe that shared mission has cemented their minds to finish what they have created.

I believe in Dan Lanning. The extra work he did for Oregon did not prevent him from coaching Georgia to a National Championship as their Defensive Coordinator. I have faith that Will and Tosh are made of the same mindset.

Alex, i guess we will have an answer later this month.

DL is the anchor for the program and the players know this. He replaced Dilly with Stein. He will find a great replacement for Stein. I expect a great replacement for Tosh, also!

I am not certain that this won't be a distraction, however, on Sunday, once the brackets are set I am confident that all focus will be on OBD's first round opponent. Business as usual? Win the next game!

My concern is recruiting! How will the recruits react if Will and Tosh were one of the reasons they were coming to Oregon?

Going to be a crazy 45 days for the players, future players, coaches, future coaches and their families.

And us fans!

I could see this more from "Stein" recruits than Tosh's. Hopefully Dan and the remaining staff, culture, fit, facilities and the defending the Natty will sway them to stay committed.

Getting these vibes from the coaching staff side. Time to give it one last go for glory and leave it all on the field with the boys!

A few things have me feeling pretty good.

In the post I saw about Stein taking the Kentucky job it also said he would continue his duties with the team until the season ends. He probably has an arrangement similar to what Lanning had with Smart at Georgia, where he wasn't allowed to recruit for the team anymore but could begin to recruit for his new team.

What makes things more difficult for Stein is that I don't think he is officially hired at Kentucky yet and TODAY is National Signing Day so who knows the recruiting class he even has to work with at the moment... well I guess I can look it up.... ranked 58th with 15 recruits basically all three stars on Rivals and I can't tell who has actually signed at this point anyways.

The reality is that Stein is going to have to recruit who he can before the second signing period and dive into the transfer portal. The portal doesn't open until January and I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the lion's share of Ducks who transfer.

His first season is going to be a bit rough but the reality is that with the NSD being so early now that new coaches are barely hired before they have to sign a recruiting class so they'll be portal heavy.

The same goes for Lupoi and Cal. Though in the case of Lupoi I haven't seen anything saying that he intends on finishing the year at Oregon or not. However, Hampton has called plays on defense before and Lanning is the HC so I am a little less concerned on that front.

Couldn't agree more. Stein & Lupoi have had the opportunity to witness the benefits of having coached a team to a national championship, and the impact that has on your future success. I believe Lanning & Company will be laser focused on the opportunity at hand. This isn't something that DL will have to conjure up; it's in the DNA of who Lanning is and the culture he has established. Oregon is not a place (post Willie & Mario) where you burn btridges to get somewhere else. Oregon is a place where you embrace the culture, win the day, and launch into better tomorrows together.

As always, Go Ducks!
