Troubles at U$C

Recommended Posts

From The Wall Street Journal (behind a paywall so I didn't bother to link to the whole article):

Newly released emails show athletics staff and fundraisers at the University of Southern California discussing admissions for certain applicants while assessing their families’ ability to donate to the institution. One fundraiser told a top athletics official that an applicant’s family would be asked for at least $1 million “if we get her in.” In another email, the same writer recommended that a student not be given a job she had sought with the football team until her family came through with a gift. Another fundraiser offered to speak to a track-and-field coach if the family of a student admitted as a walk-on in the track and field program was “really thinking of a gift.” The emails were sent from 2013 to 2018 and were released by lawyers for former USC water-polo coach Jovan Vavic, who is charged with taking bribes to designate applicants as recruited athletes. Only one of the four figures involved in the correspondence has been charged with wrongdoing. The others deny that they conditioned admission or participation on a team on families’ donations. USC said it had been deceived by Vacic.

I wonder how often stuff like this goes on at a variety of universities...

Well, we did see it was happening at a lot of Universities.  Some people went to jail for it.  Quite a few coaches at Universities lost their jobs because they were recruiting fake athletes while parents donated money to the school.

Well, but this is another layer.  These aren't fake athletes, they're actual athletes in non-revenue sports whose recruitment/admission apparently hinged on whether mommy and daddy would make a big gift.  So if her parents were worth enough money, she's suddenly good enough to play volleyball or run track or whatever for the Trojans.

Wow.  While it is not a surprise, it is a disappointment to see corruption in the Non-Revenue sports.  Thanks for posting it.

This is how legacies get into colleges, all the time. If this is shocking, then you aren't paying attention. The problem is when it is done overtly, but it is part of the admission process at any school. Being the university of spoiled children makes it too obvious.

Just another form of pay to play or maybe just sit on the bench or sidelines.

I truly love people. Love interacting with all that God created. However, some people can sink to the lowest common denominator. When they get caught, the first rat will spill the beans and try to take the rest down with them.

Haywarduck is right on that if we are surprised then we weren't paying attention. Personally, those without a moral compass simply say I didn't know I was doing anything wrong.

The Lori Loughlin scandal was at U$C too.

The Hollywood power couple admits they acted illegally to get their daughters into University of Southern California.

You have to be kidding me. Not USC what's the world coming to.

Old neighbor was caught up in that scandal at USC. She was doing well there and probably would have ultimately been an AD somewhere. Was taking around $20K a month under the table on top of her salary for doctoring up backgrounds and getting rich kids into SC.

An acquaintance said she is now driving for Uber or one of those services. Short term greed sometimes works other times not so much.

Did any of the University faculty members go to jail for this, or just the parents paying?

The men's water polo coach has been charged with crimes; the others deny any wrongdoing and blame the coach.  Sounds like the investigation is on-going.

If she was making 20 grand a month EXTRA and is now an Uber driver, she obviously wasn't bright enough to save that additional quarter mil a year...

Had moved from one high end neighborhood to another in a relatively short period of time. Guess it is hard to find a good job when you have been publicly disgraced for fraud.
