Oregon House Bill Would Require Approval of State Legislature for Public Universities to Change Conferences

Recommended Posts

A proposed bill in the Oregon state House would require public universities to receive approval from the state Legislature if they wish to change conference affiliation for college sports.

House Bill 3427, proposed by Rep. Paul Evans, D-Monmouth, calls for public state universities that wish to “change the athletic association, conference or organization with authority over intercollegiate sports” to make the recommendation to “the appropriate legislative committees for review.”

The desired change in conferences “may not take effect unless it has first been submitted to the appropriate legislative committees ... and has been approved by the Legislative Assembly. The Legislative Assembly may adopt, amend or reject the proposed change,” according to the proposed HB 3427.

A public hearing and possible work session for the bill has been called for March 28 at 3 p.m.

Sounds like we need to get to the B1G before 3/28/23- signed, sealed, delivered.

Mostly joking!

Monmouth is pretty close to Corvallis, (where the sponsor of the bill is from) and this looks like a way to protect "Corvallis College," (one of their actual names in the past) I assume.

Are the Beavers scared?

My thoughts exactly. Beavers trying to lock themselves to the Duck's tails.

It's true, if approved, the Ducks will never join the Big-Ten. Guaranteed the Oregon legislature would only approve of the move if OSU goes as well, and if the that's the case then the Big-Ten won't take the Ducks. They don't want the dead-weight Beavers watering down the slice of the pie.

With all the crime why are there so many bills trying to sabotage Oregon's football team?

The Oregon solons have nothing better to do? SMH.

The Oregon schools are not governed by the a board of state regents as is the case in California.

True, at least for the time being. What we are seeing is the unavoidable domino effect forced on west coast public institutions by the choice of one private California university. I wouldn’t be surprised if something similar is brewing amongst salons in Washington as well. The freedom of choice clock is certainly ticking for certain west coast public universities.

Depending on the clout of OR/OR ST in the legislature and the influence of PK I would expect a move by Oregon to be approved with a possible 'tax' on Duck revenue like the tax imposed in favor of CAL on UCLA?

This is silly. Can you imagine if California, Oklahoma or Texas had this law?

Sorry UCLA. You can’t go to the B1G since they don’t want Cal.

Sorry Oklahoma. You can’t go to the SEC since they don’t want Oklahoma State.

Sorry Texas (and A&M previously).  You can’t go to the SEC since they don’t want Texas Tech.

I'm hoping this bill will not pass.

Oregon State fans do not like the thought of being “Oregon’s Little-Brother,” yet that is what this bill is.

It’s quite possible that college football’s sense of community, tradition and sense of territorial integrity are now beyond the point of being at risk in this Chicken Little climate of panic-stricken lunging for a spot at the table of $$.

What is potentially gained or lost goes well beyond the survival desire of Beavers or Cougars. It has more to do with accepting the notion that college football as we have known it is dead.

That may be the case. I’m just not convinced the answer is a mad scramble to shove yourself and all your toys onto an escape pod and jettison yourself towards . . . ?

Fear (of being left out) is rarely the wisest foundation upon which to base decision making.

Finally, the Oregon Legislature does something right.

This article is behind a paywall, but you can tell from the tweet the good news.
