Is there a better offensive coordinator position in college football than at Oregon? We are known for high scoring offensives, dynamic skill players and have as good of a track record developing QBs for the NFL as anyone. Just look at some of Oregon’s recent offensive coordinator’s who went on to get head coaching jobs: • Bob Toledo (UCLA) • Mike Bellotti (Oregon) • Dirk Koetter (Boise State/Arizona State) • Jeff Tedford (Cal) • Chip Kelly (Oregon) • Scott Frost (UCF/Nebraska/UCF) • Kenny Dillingham (ASU) It’s just a matter of time before Coach Stein gets that opportunity and I’ll be rooting for him, except when his team plays the Ducks. Hopefully, Coach Lanning is keeping the list of potential OCs updated in his notebook but I don’t think he’ll need to make too many calls since it’s one of the best coordinator positions in all of college football.

If the PAC had survived it would have turned into the ACC and played second fiddle to the B1G and SEC. One, or at the most two, teams would have made the CFP each year. One loss would perenially put OBD on the edge of elimination. Now they at least get consideration for the playoffs even with two losses in the B1G. It certainly happens for the SEC and the ESPN/Finebaum honks that carry their water. Maybe the evolution of NIL and player reimbursement would level the field amongst the 'haves', of which Oregon is a card carrying member. But witness that a two loss Miami is on CFP life support, and this year it looks like only the ACC champ is guaranteed a spot. Is there any reason to believe a reincarnated PAC would be any different?

I haven’t seen one person saying that the Indiana loss was a season killer. However, IMO, it did 2 things: It showed EVERYONE Oregon’s flaws, which DCs have continued to attack. Hopefully the coaches and team continue to focus on their weaknesses (aka go to the doctor) and get better as the season progresses. This is our first bye since that loss so it should give our coaches and team more time to address them. With a playoff, the best team doesn’t always win the championship, a team can win it by getting hot and playing its best at the end of the year. Oregon still has the talent to compete and win a national championship, if they can put it all together. It shrunk Oregon’s margin of error. At the beginning of the season, I believed that a 2-loss Oregon team would be a lock for the playoffs but right now, I’m not as certain. The media LOVES the SEC and I could see a 2 loss Notre Dame getting in over Oregon. Same with USC or UW, if they beat us and win out. How many teams will the ACC and Big XII get in (e.g., will there be any huge upsets in their conference championship games giving a team outside the top 12 a playoff spot)? Crazy things happen down the stretch. Oregon fans should be rooting against all of the contenders for those at large playoffs spots (and rooting for Indiana to win out?).

David, thank you for your thoughts and feelings on OBD's move to the BIG. The PAC was truly unpredictable and at times crazy. However, this old Duck fan does not miss after dark in the desert! That trip was more than a speed bump for the Ducks. With one loss in most seasons the Ducks would not be ranked #6. Pollsters are showing the Ducks respect because they earned it on the field in the BIG. They beat Michigan in the BIG house, split with tOSU, beat PSU twice and are in a conference with the $1 and #2 teams in the nation. RESPECT! Last year tOSU and OBD's were #1 and #2 for most of the season. And the conference has won the last 2 Natty's and may get a threepeat this season. When was the last PAC team to win a Natty? Just usuck...... I will take that narrative over the fun and crazy of the PAC anytime. As you do, I find myself checking scores and flipping channels to watch parts of the many SEC games of the century every week. Very few BIG game match ups are compelling. I think GAT is correct, it will take some time and we will develope rivalries. Can't wait for a rematch with IU or tOSU. My biggest complaint is the travel miles. It is disproportionate for West Coast teams. First of all, the west teams should play each other every season to cut out 1 Saturday of time zone change. And rotate one season with 2 trips east then the next season with 3 east trips or add one or 2 teams out west. More BIG teams need to travel west. Looking closely to see how well OBD's play down the stretch and into the CFP. This Ducks do multiple trips Back east during football season and, at least for me, jet lag recovery is real. Go Ducks! Lets make some new rivalries with Iowa and Minnesota...

I wish Jahlil Florence the best and believe that he is talented enough to start and thrive at another program. Hopefully, it’s not a conference school (unless it’s UCLA). Oregon is absolutely loaded at CB.

Great article. I feel the same way. I realize that the PAC-12 was a “dead man walkin’” and that Oregon had to make a change to survive as a perennial national title contender. However, I don’t understand why the Pac (the only major conference West of the Rockies) could not survive. I miss playing at Stanford and at the Arizona schools (hopefully we can start scheduling these teams OOC). I still find myself rooting for our old PAC-12 conference foes (except for Oregon State or Colorado). The ironic thing is, if the LA schools invested in and had more success on the football field, I believe that the TV money would have been there (perhaps not quite at the B1G or SEC levels but enough). Instead they took their underperforming program and the LA media market to the B1G for the payday. Now they are just part of the mediocre group that you mentioned in your article.

Great article. I think you are experiencing what I felt when Florida had to travel to Missouri and Texas A&M for the first time a decade ago, as conference opponents. Except on a far larger scale. You jumped into a one hundred plus year old conference that was largely associated with midwestern universities. Yes getting to host Ohio State and Michigan are great. You grew up knowing those are programs you'd love to see Oregon play. Rutgers and Maryland aren't even traditional B1G programs. They joined the league along with Nebraska in 2011 from the Big 12, ACC, and Big East (remember them?). Oregon at Rutgers is a game you would get if you and and buddy were playing on NCAA Football on whatever console you own, it would be one of those randomizer games you'd just let the CPU pick for you. I think as the years go on, you will build up some feeling for going to Iowa or Minnesota, especially if they upset you. You already have a history with Wisconsin. From experience, I can tell you that I'm starting to really dislike Missouri and Texas A&M in the same way I do South Carolina, and Ole Miss. It's taken a decade, but there's genuine feelings that weren't there before. Give it some time. It won't ever be like the old PAC Twelve, but that's because you grew up with that conference. Kids growing up today will grow up with new rivalries.

This year I find myself missing the Pac-12 and all the chaos it brings. The B1G is just too top-heavy, and that’s the problem with super conferences; they generate a whole lot of mediocre games. I know what that guy and bunch are. They will dominate teams they can just out talent like USF, or against in game "generals" like Billy Napier. But Lashlee and Brohm will out coach him everyday that ends with a y. They have just enough talent to keep up until Mario does something silly.

Truthfully the SEC has been diluted to the point where it's a very even conference, but it's incredibly ovverrated. Alabama still lost to FSU, they've dominated SEC play. To me that loss still counts. You can't just pretend it didn't happen. My prediction is Alabama will end up being the best SEC team, even though A&M has the best win of any team this far(@Notre Dame). But Ole Miss, Georgia, Texas, Vanderbilt, and Oklahoma aren't beating Indiana, Oregon, or Ohio State.

Lots of good points, Oregon123, particularly that a strong Oregon State program redounds to the benefit of all of the state, including OBD. One thing, though, it’s not a probability that the good OSU players will transfer, that is already happening. Addicus Sappington?

You're right it wasn't. It was still a major bummer of a loss though. Oregon just played so poorly. They played a solid game against Penn State then went on a bye and returned looking quite bad. And again I stand by my belief that if Penn State had beaten Oregon they would still be a top 10 team with some signs of life in them. Oregon ripped the heart out of that team and threw it on the floor. Oregon can still achieve a deep playoff run... They just need to improved each week.

With the 12 team format, your team can blow a game and still make it in. Alabama's season is not over from their loss. Ohio St lost twice last year and then won it all. The Ducks did not execute that game. It wasn't like the 2011 game vs LSU when they got beat by better players. Losing one of these November games would put the Ducks in the emergency room. Finishing strong would show the team is resilient. What I like about the Dan Lanning era is how the team bounces back after losses. They are not going to do a Penn State - lose a close game and then sink to the bottom of the sea. Since Iowa basically played Indiana fairly even, this next game might be like a re-match with Indiana. Oregon is still healthy, as healthy as any team can be in November. That actually means more than a perfect record.

I seem to recall Darron Thomas throwing some deep balls. Dante has the arm for it. The team has speed. Take some shots. Especially if your just going to punt after the next play anyway.

If you played on a lot of sports teams (even recreational), you know that when you really really suck... when you FINALLY do something right, it feels like you just won the super bowl. I admire their fan base. They do care. They don't crap on their team. What would be pathetic is if their stadium was empty for that win. I hope the PAC makes a good comeback. The beavs and Wazzu would have been perfect for the new Big12, but they got left out. What if, in future years, the beavs win the PAC, make the last spot in the playoff and pull off a huge upset in the playoff? Seems less likely now with the portal and NIL because their good players would probably transfer. Remember, Utah got good enough that they ALMOST beat Ohio St in the Rose Bowl. A podunk school can over achieve, and a rabid fan base always helps the cause. A good Beavers team reflects well on the entire state of Oregon.

If I were the coach, since he was buried on the depth chart, I would have moved him to receiver. He might have done well at it. Nothing at all to lose. He is the right size and build and he has to be fast to play cornerback. Again, we don't know what his injury has done to him. He was not the first talented Duck to flame out after injury.

He was on the West coast for the Oregon years. You can't expect national media to pay attention to what goes on over here... Our game started too late at night for them to stay up for. Then before he was at Oregon we was at Bama and no one remembers what he was doing before that.
