Poor Rushing Defense: How Realistic Are We?
I've been pondering again, (Always a bad thing?) and like you--was not pleased with our rush-defense, as Coach Lanning was not. Yet we know that the two Northwestern touchdowns were scored on the second team defense by the starting Wildcat offense...so just how bad is it? If we left our starters in, we probably would have got the shut-out, but isn't it more important to get playing time to the young-guns that will be starting in the next two years? How does freshman Na'eem Offord learn without getting burned in game-speed? Do you want him to learn that during a game that counts in 2026 or 2027? That is one important question we all need to ask? I've decided that playing time is more important for linebackers who are out of position--to learn at game speed--and is what they need to experience. It was garbage time...who cares? Second question; just how realistic is it for us to expect perfection from the team? Yes, the No. 1 defense gave up more ground yards than we wanted...but they kept a Big-10 team scoreless while they were in there. Isn't that the goal?\ I do think we have to readjust our thinking to the new conference; if any conference is known for tough offensive lines that bull for rush yards...it is the B1G, because they have to in order to compete. Even weak teams will move the ball on the ground against us. We lost three starters on the defensive line to the NFL from last year, but recall how well Purdue ran the ball on us? We won 35-0, but the Boilermakers got over 200 yards rushing off us, (Linked) and anytime you rush for over 200 yards, that is pretty darn good, and you will usually win. While demanding the best feels good...how realistic is it? Look at the college scoreboard, and you will see teams with good defenses, (Like Georgia and Notre Dame) get a boatload of points scored on them. I think it is pretty unavoidable these days, as everyone has the firepower on offense to score. Thus why I think Will Stein will strive to score as many as possible because when we face good teams like Penn State...they are going to score a bunch on us. Just a reality, IMHO. Agree?

What network is going to cover this game? ESPN The Ocho? The Pac-12 could raise their national visibility by introducing NCAA competition in dodgeball, with William Shatner as commissioner.

Oregon QB Dante Moore's Classy Move After Win Shows True Colors
I think the Lake Michigan wind was the 5th defender on that pass.....it just died at the end but the receiver had a step.

Post Northwestern Game…Reactions?
I look forward to hearing opinions from our board experts. To this fan's untrained eye, it seemed to me that the approach, given the unusual game conditions/environment and the opponent, was to play straight up football with limited deceptive plays and defensive stunts/blitzes and see if we could simply overpower a lesser opponent in a challenging situation. Through 3 quarters, the score was 34-0. Then, we took the foot off the gas and they scored. Workmanlike and successful? Yes. Aesthetically pleasing? Perhaps not, though this old Duck fan appreciates any win. Those most disgruntled, probably laid the points.

Dillon Gabriel Makes Pro NFL Debut
Troy Franklin is also having somewhat of a coming out party right now in Indianapolis. He’s leading Denver in receiving so far, he has a TD and an 11 yard rush.

Post Northwestern Game…Reactions?
I was disappointed in the Ducks line play. Northwestern's D line, hardly up to the level of Penn State, made things rough for our run game, particularly up the middle.

Foster Out at UCLA; Pry at Va Tech
One thing I do know, I'd love to be Pat Fitzgerald's agent. 🤑Pat has to be on the Wisconsin AD's speed dial. AD train wreck, Dan Guerrero, put UCLA athletics in the deep red. Jim Mora never should have been fired. What bona fide coach would want to coach football in Westwood? Basketball, yes. But football. Brent Pry was a graduate assistant at VA Tech before serving as James Franklin's DC at Penn State from 2016 through 2021. Could Michael Vick return to his alma mater? How about a return home for South Carolina coach Shane Beamer? Vandy beat up the Gamecocks yesterday, but the damage was done after QB Sellers left with a concussion. Beamer's done a very good job at USC(e), including on the recruiting front, but the Gamecocks' next SEC title will be the first. At VA Tech, Shane played on 3 teams that won Big East Conference championships.

Dark Knight vs Whiteout: Oregon vs Penn State
Florida actually out gained LSU by twenty yards. Neither team had over 350 yards. The difference was a pick six from Lagway and the four other interceptions that LSU didn't match. Vanderbilt actually looks pretty stout. They just don't get any attention because they're Vanderbilt. They held South Carolina to seven points. Sellers went out in the second of that game, but it was still impressive.

Dark Knight vs Whiteout: Oregon vs Penn State
I don't know much about Stein, if he has connections to Florida recruiting it would help. I like the offense at Oregon, but you guys just about always have an explosive offense. From Chip Kelly to Mark Helfrich to Kenny Dillingham and now Will Stein. Whoever we get I hope they have input but hire an offensive coordinator. Billy Napier has tried to run the offense while being the head coach. You can tell too, there are misalignments every game. False starts and absolutely no schematic adjustments when the opposing defense jams up the middle and disguises any sort of zone coverage. Lagway has regressed dramatically. Napier didn't teach him how to do anything but make one read.

The Pig-2? They Are Getting Slaughtered...
Certainly a mixture. Some was forced into them...everyone else leaving the Pac-12 was out of their control. Their lack of branding that they could leverage into joining a new conference... That was on them. Along with a lot of other decisions.

Thanks Charles. My first win since I joined. I’m hoping this continues to be a year of “firsts”.

Who Knew . . . College Football Has a Mercy Rule
Plus, I believe that the Mississippi State coaches also agreed go with a "10-Mississippi" defensive count rule as well. So, that's nice.

Dark Knight vs Whiteout: Oregon vs Penn State
Florida's defense looked pretty decent. With 5 picks from the offense that's a LOT to put on them. Well... 4 picks one was a pick6. LSU's defense was bailed out by Florida's penalties. One took an 80yard td off the board.

Oregon QB Dante Moore's Classy Move After Win Shows True Colors
I just knew that Dante & I had a lot in common 😆. He certainly seems like a fine young man. However, I'm never going to be overly fond of seeing any QB throwing into quadruple coverage. But, even with that being said, if he had a little bit more air under that pass, I think he might just have dropped it in there.

Foster Out at UCLA; Pry at Va Tech
I bet Will Stein will be high on their wish list. But I don’t think he’d be interested in that dumpster fire.

Who Knew . . . College Football Has a Mercy Rule
And No, it wasn't firing DeShaun Foster. Alcorn State got mercy ruled: At halftime of Mississippi State’s 63-0 win over Alcorn State, the school sent an announcement that the head coaches had agreed to shorten the game to 10-minute quarters in the second half. If you didn’t know that was allowed by rule, don’t worry. It almost never happens. But it also illustrates why SEC schools should be playing opponents their own size rather than schools like Alcorn State.
