The SEC Goes to 9 Conference Games in 2026
There's an easy answer to your last question Jon. Arch Manning is the prodigy, the consensus next big thing. Many feel like Texas would've been better with Manning starting last year. Georgia is heading into this year with Mike Bobo calling plays and Gunner Stockton taking the snaps. Most feel that Stockton is a major downgrade from Carson Beck. So with Texas you have Sark and Manning to go along with a defense that gave that Ohio State juggernaut fits. In Georgia you have Kirby and that defense which will be great, but Stockton is seen as a ?. I think that Georgia is still king until Texas proves they can take that crown. Georgia beat Texas twice last year, including an overtime affair where Stockton came in for Beck and composed the winning score. Both will make the playoff anyway, it's just a matter of who gets the bye. It might be more beneficial to host a playoff game over getting that bye until the format changes anyway. I know that bye didn't do Georgia or Oregon any favors last year. Meanwhile Texas and Penn State got to the semis with pretty sweet draws imo.

It keeps getting worse for the Cardinal. Last night's loss to Hawaii was Hawaii's first win over a P4/5 opponent since 2019. 😧 Beaver transfer QB Gulbranson threw a pick late in the game to set up critical points for Hawaii. Other than that, Andrew, how'd you enjoy the trip? 😁

The SEC Goes to 9 Conference Games in 2026
Thanks, ND. The tables have turned, and it's great to see Bama, Texas, and Ole Miss having to visit Athens this season. Between UGA's road schedule and Oregon playing eight B1G opponents in a row without a break, the schedules seem easier, but aren't easy, especially for your Dawgs, than last season. The CBB Committee's Quad System gives a team the same credit for a road win against a Quad 2 opponent as it does for a Quad 1 home win. So, home versus road wins are factored in. But bye weeks are not, as a week or two off in season is unique to football. The CFB Committee uses SportsSource Analytics as its source for strength of schedule (SOS) and strength of record, supposedly at least. Boise State's SOS last season did not qualify for its No. 9 seed. At least I hope not, because if it did, send out an SOS on SportsSource. The CFB committee's use of any and every metric has been hidden from the public. Will this change in 2025? Before moving to nine conference games, unless he received 'inside information' from the CFB committee concerning possible programming changes to the metric and how the committee intends to use it, Greg Sankey would accept verbal assurances from the same group that arguably disadvantaged 3-loss SEC teams last season. I did note Commissioner Sankey's admonition to the committee that the SEC will be watching to see how the committee ranks and seeds this season. The problem with this is that the broadcast agreement with ESPN requires that any change to the PO format has to be agreed to by December 1, 2025. The committee's final 2025 ranking and the consequent PO seeding happen on December 7, 2025. Of course, the December 1st date could be extended, but if the PO is to expand, ESPN has to have time to sell advertising for a new 2026 additional game format. There are undercurrents here, including the SEC understandably being paid more money by ESPN to play nine conference games, and quite possibly back-channel discussions with Tony Petitti? Sankey has noted that the 5-11 PO model is the SEC's preferred format, but nothing has been agreed to between the Power 2. Go Dawgs! I cannot believe Texas is getting all of the SEC champ love and not the Georgia team that gutted out a title last season, defeating Texas twice in the process, and I hope that the Dawgs will have receivers in 2025 who hopefully have 'good hands' and not hands of Teflon.

Yep, we made this choice, there is absolutely no way we should utter a single word about this, maybe in the future it might be a little more even, but this is our reality for the foreseeable future. I don't think it really has that big of an effect on Football, but the effect on the other sports is rough. Football goes out on Friday comeback the next day, I'll take that over going on a road trip where you're gone for 4-6 days. I think it's already cost a top ten coach in Ullmar from Volleyball. I can see it costing us other coaches in the future in some of the lower revenue sports. It will be especially true for those that don't have strong ties to the west coast.

Traeshon Holden will be on somebody’s roster this year even if the Cowboys decide to cut him. Dallas Cowboys On SI3 players Dallas Cowboys can't afford to leave off the 53...These three players need to be on the 53-man roster, or the Dallas Cowboys would be unlikely to retain them on the practice squad for the 2025 NFL season.

It's the cost of being in the B1G. Love it or hate it ... It's the cost we have to pay. We were never going to be given any benefits for being on the west coast. I think we were all thinking there would be an extended eaat-west division to lower travel but that didn't happen. Frankly I like how we play every team in a two year cycle. But the Ducks must travel a lot. Not so bad for football but the other sports have it harder.

The SEC Goes to 9 Conference Games in 2026
Don't know how they could ever do this in figuring strength of schedule, but shouldn't some tweak be made for scheduling shafts some teams must endure. One that is irking me at the moment as a Dawg fan is that our two highest regular season opponents, Alabama and Texas were awarded bye weeks before coming to Sanford Stadium to take on my puppies, whereas the Dawgs have league games those weeks. This may prove to be of little consequence in September when we play the Tide, but could prove to be a major advantage for Texas in November when more guys are nicked up and dragging. Sure wish the Dawgs had had a similar advantage last year when we played these teams at their places. Sorry for the whiny rant on such a glorious day--the return of college football. It was grand, no?

Josh Pate May Have Oregon Losing the BIG Title, But Has Us in the 'Natty
Fun random note that’s probably not any less valid than Josh Pate’s prediction. 😆 In the CFB video game playing as OBD, I played PSU THREE TIMES. Beat them in the regular season, lost to them in the B1G championship, then beat them in the rubber match second round of the playoffs.

Charles. Oregon's 1st bye is Week 6, after the Penn State game and before Indiana travels to Autzen, with the second bye in Week 10, after playing Wisconsin at home and before traveling to Iowa in Week 11. Before traveling to Eugene, Indiana also has a bye in Week 6. Like OBD, Iowa has a bye in Week 10 before hosting OBD in Week 11. Penn State is off the week before the Week 5 White Out, but this could be to OBD's advantage as PSU plays three donut holes before the Oregon game. Oregon will be the first opponent with a roster equal to that of PSU. Wisconsin has a bye in Week 8 before playing the Ducks in Autzen on Week 9. Rutgers plays at UW in Week 7, with the game kicking off on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 11 PM Eastern, before hosting OBD in Week 8. So Rutgers will be traveling its longest distance of the season before playing OBD. USC plays Iowa in LA the week before playing in Autzen on Week 13. Week 13 sees UW at UCLA before hosting Oregon in Week 14. UW has a yo-yo of an East-West travel schedule: Week 5, Ohio State, Week 6 at Maryland, Week 7, Rutgers, Week 8, at Michigan, Week 9, Illinois, Week 10, at Wisconsin, Week 11, Purdue, Week 12, Bye. You're making me dizzy 🤪. 2025 is a season with five B1G road games, but the schedule this season is friendlier than the eight consecutive B1G games without a break in 2024. With this kind of travel, Rob Mullens must do his darndest to arrange seven home games every season. It would be better for Rob to schedule Home+Home series with Cal and Stanford instead of OK State and Baylor. First P4 upset of the season today with No. 17, three point favorite Kansas State, falling to No. 22 Iowa State, in Dublin. A week from today, hip-hip-hooray, let's herd some Bobcats!😊

The B1G did not want the other teams. I thought that with such superb academic schools as Cal and Stanford are--they would fit right in. But the revenue they create would take-from, and not add to each B1G members' share of the media contract. Even when they suck...the fan bases of Washington, UCLA and USC bring additional revenue to the Big-10, thus why the invitation. The reduced share to Oregon and Washington is a probationary period to "prove" we provide additional revenue. I think Oregon Has....

Would have been nice if Oregon, Washington, USC, UCLA, Cal and Stanford had approached the BIG together. Heck, throw in Arizona and Utah. No idea if the BIG would have wanted them all......but fighting USC to create equality between USC and Wa St was madness. A lot of wasted energy trying to save the uneconomic PAC and the bacon of Wa St, Or St, Az St and Colorado. ......the result is history.

Brutal Big-10 Travel: Is This FAIR?
Great perspective, and again--that is why I call you, "The Schedule Maven." Someone brought up how many of the schools that travel to Oregon have a bye the week before, thus can come sooner and get acclimated. Does Oregon have that traveling advantage too?

Brutal Big-10 Travel: Is This FAIR?
OBD plays the last three games of this season in the Pacific time zone. Home against Minnesota and USC with the last regular season game at UW. SC plays its last four games in the West; UW the last three, and UCLA two of the last three. Week 13 sees the Bruins in Columbus against Ohio State. In the NFL in 2025, the LA Chargers, 37,186 miles, the LA Rams, 34.832, and the Seattle Seahawks, 31,302, are the top three travelers. Lengthy travel comes with being located out West. OBD's two trips to the Central time zone and two to the Eastern time zone are spread out, so there is no back-to-back travel. All schedules, including football, are under B1G review. I thought the 'Pac-12 teams' would be permanent opponents. Two Pacific time zone trips every season would eliminate a trip East. I'll take the money and the B1G prestige over travel to Tucson, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Pullman.

The SEC Goes to 9 Conference Games in 2026
I heard on one of those YouTube podcasts "The Monty Show" that there is talk of a twenty team format. According to him the SEC was only holding the nine game card was because they wanted the B1G to agree to their preferred format and by acting like going to nine games was a huge sacrifice that the B1G got a huge win. But others have said Sankey folded. I'm kind of over hearing about realignment and CFP negotiations. Football is officially back! Iowa State won a Big Twelve top 25 showdown vs Kansas State in Ireland. UNLV which is a trendy G05 playoff team is in a twenty four to twenty four point deadlock with Idaho State. Playoff implications in week zero?

We travel to Penn State and Rutgers…why don’t we add Maryland and have ALL the farthest teams on the schedule?
-
Brutal Big-10 Travel: Is This FAIR?
That's crazy. We only have 5 away games right? 3k miles average including a short jump to UW? That doesn't sound right.

I don't what is crazier...the distances that West Coast teams have to travel, or how little other B1G teams travel? Most of the B1G will travel only half or a third of what the Ducks will!

Can We Bring Back "Win The Day" Motto?
WTD got taken down about 10 notches during Helfrich 3 and 8 season, when Helfrich was asked in an interview if the team was still winning the day. He responded saying "we're winning some of them." This showed the well had been poisoned, hence when Taggart arrived he got rid of it trying to instill some immediate accountability and agency for the players with "Do Something". I doubt he would have kept it forever, but lucky for us he didn't stick around for us to have to find out. WTD is still solid, based sports psychology, was never adopted by any other school, and represents a highly successful period for the program, so I wouldn't mind if it popped up around the facilities and on merchandise now and then.
