Silver Lining to Hoosier Defeat?
The buyout on Franklin's side was $1. PSU is totally eating this entire enchilada.

Silver Lining to Hoosier Defeat?
Most contracts have a mitigation clause to subtract the annual pay of a new contract. The best example of not doing this was Charlie Weiss. I think he was being paid more by Notre Dame not to coach than Kansas was paying him as their head coach.

James Franklin is Out at Penn State
Yikes... barely two weeks ago Franklin had the #2 team in the nation. And now, Franklin's former team thinks he stinks so badly that they were willing to drop about $60 million just to get rid of him. It tells me how massive the amount of money is that comes through college football, and what a wonderful merit-based system sports are.

Maybe we can get Mike Cavanaugh back on the OL staff.

Whoa! Did You Hear That Massive THUD Out There?
My bet is that the game will mentally start slowing slowing down for Moore and that very soon, he will begin picking blitzing defenses apart. He's just too bright and athletic for that not to happen. I'm betting that within a couple weeks, he will begin feasting on the blitz.

We lost to a good team, sucks, but you can’t win em all. I trust they’ll grow from it and come back stronger. There’s no way this team has seen its best football yet.

Time for Stein to Move up to the Box
If your job is "Xs and Os" how can you do it at the field level, you know? Nobody ever schemes on a white board or tablet from a sideline view. They spent a lot of money building boxes high in the sky for a reason. I just can't fathom the advantage of being on the sidelines outweighing the bird's eye view. 🤷

Time for Stein to Move up to the Box
I agree with you. Perhaps if he was in the box--he would see receivers downfield being missed. His reliance on the "check-downs" has become excessive, at least for this game, IMHO. Although an experienced QB would make him look better on the sidelines!

Silver Lining to Hoosier Defeat?
The cost to replace Franklin right now is $56 Million Dollars. After the season is over it would be $48 Million. That's a load of scratch to fundraise in order to dump a guy. I would imagine that the PSU fans who want him gone are hoping/wishing/praying that he finds another gig on his own --- which seems like a long shot to me.

Bray Out at Oregon State
Another name added to the list. Oregon State is fascinating to watch... Just like a train wreck.

Whoa! Did You Hear That Massive THUD Out There?
I became a Duck fan the day I was born (my dad was an UO graduate) and that will NEVER change because of on field performance. Win or lose, I love my Ducks (and I expect to experience a lot more winning than losing this season and beyond).

Silver Lining to Hoosier Defeat?
Lanning's buyout is super high. I saw it around 50mil. In the case of Penn State they just paid Franklin 50 mil to go away... They probably don't have another 50 mil to buy out Lanning and then turnaround and pay him bigger than Oregon. Also I think Lanning has something built into his contract that if another program just wants Lanning to pick up the phone that is going to cost them. Beyond that Lanning isn't picking up the phone.

Just remember the same people who laud you and give you the flowers first are the same ones who'll be the first to throw stones. Just look at Alabama. Look at Texas or Oklahoma. Heck look at Notre Dame and Ohio State last year. You know, the two teams that won three and four straight playoff games respectively.

Silver Lining to Hoosier Defeat?
I think we are safe with Will Stein as well!

James Franklin is Out at Penn State
He outright lost the lockeroom after the Oregon game. The team has absolutely given up on him and he on his team. They were basically at the point of giving up on the season and looking to next year. And they are doing that now but with an added coaching search. But who are they going to get that's better than Franklin? Seriously, he had a top 10 problem but until Oregon broke him he did beat all the non ranked teams and even the ranked ones he was supposed to.

Silver Lining to Hoosier Defeat?
Good. One fewer game and a likely PO first-round home game, today AP-projected to be vs. Georgia. Indiana vs Ohio State in Indianapolis? Bring it on! Let two other B1G boys take a long nap.

Penn State also lost their QB Drew Aller for the rest of the year.

Time for Stein to Move up to the Box
The performance of the offense was disappointing. The defense was not outstanding, but possibly good enough for a win against a fine Indiana team if the offense had played better. Indiana's staff and players deserve much credit for their plan and execution, but I agree with many others that Stein was not at his best. Specific problems: Oregon had some success running the ball, especially with Jordan Davison between the guards. These kinds of plays featured our best two linemen and exploited their advantage against lighter defensive linemen. Many recall that Stein did not stick with this approach, for no apparent reason. I remarked in the thread that OBD ran the ball into a seven-man box on first down early in the game, which predictably put us behind the chains. DL seemed to think this was a more frequent problem. I do not recall this being a persistent issue. Erik Skopil stated that most of the sacks happened not because of our linemen lost one on one matchups, but when OBD were beaten by schemes that were not foreseen or not countered effectively. This issue was not fixed, but grew worse in the second half. I have not coached or played one down of organized football, but I would think that the issues with the running game ought to have been apparent on the field. I would think it might be easier to see what the pass rushers are doing from the box. However, Stein may find it easier to coach Dante and Poncho on the field, and clearly some of that was needed. To their credit, DL accepted responsibility rather than blame his players (unlike some other prominent coaches we have heard from recently), and Dante accepted blame rather than cast it on his teammates. I respect them for that, and hold out some hope for improvement because of it.

James Franklin is Out at Penn State
I sure hope that coach Cig stays at Indy. Not because of the possible PSU improvement, but because Indiana deserves it. Does PSU take a look at Fisch or Dilly?

James Franklin is Out at Penn State
It's time for Franklin to become a college football commentator. It is extreme to fire this winning of a coach (heck, he's still .500 for the season!), with such a large buyout without having a plan in place. Tinfoil hat says they got a handshake from Cignetti's agent in a dark alley Sunday night, and I'm only half joking.

Whoa! Did You Hear That Massive THUD Out There?
I trust this coaching staff. Next week’s performance will be key. Get a solid win and they can build from there. Losing a top 10 matchup is much better now than during the playoffs.

Whoa! Did You Hear That Massive THUD Out There?
I will turn off some of the pundits after a loss... I don't need to hear the same things on repeat when they are mostly things I've already said. But just remember everything is still to play for and most teams need a loss to smack them in the face to improve. Right now I'm not so sure I'd want to be Rutgers as they're next up and set solidly in the get right game. Lanning should have this team fired up and realigned.

Portal Quarterbacks: My Words Come Back to Haunt Me...
I'm still in the room for Dante Moore leading this team, but I have 1 foot out the door. Why did UCLA Moore show up again? Was this the first time he's seen the same scenarios that he failed with at UCLA? Receivers not wide open, zone coverage, less than 5 seconds to throw? What was it exactly? It's like good Bo, bad Bo, the Dante Moore version. The good news is the University of Oregon, it's fans and Stein were able to support Bo to be good Bo nearly all of the time, but the bad news is bad Bo still cost us a playoff spot against Washington in the Pac12 Champ game.. It's a fine line between success and failure. I stand by my comments that Dante was the primary reason we lost this game, but he's our starting QB and has shown some growth. I certainly have hope he can learn to play better under these adverse conditions we are guaranteed to see in the playoffs.
