Is Oregon’s NIL and Recruiting Ahead of Everyone?
Drake replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
On what planet does it make sense to pay a high school TE $10 million? Does that then make your QB worth $40 to 50 million? I can’t blame anyone to go after life changing money, but you have to wonder what goes on in the locker room and off the field when many proven seniors players, who are more important than any TE, are overlooked. The obvious answer is that they hit the transfer portal, but team chemistry has to be tense, at best, on certain teams. Managing egos is much more difficult than training athletes. I think that Oregon’s NIL collective is being sensible, if that is possible, in the current environment. -
"Texas State is the Next Boise State"...Really?
DanLduck replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Boise St made noise cuz they were in the Mt West. I always thought that if WSU played the BSU schedule, they would make a bowl every year. And if BSU played WSU schedule, maybe make a bowl 1 out of 3 years. (In the old Pac12) Now the Pac (St)eight is the old Mt West, only with more parity. I see them all beating up on each other and none of them making a playoff, even at 16 teams! Canzano is desperate for Beavis to be relevant. He knows us Duck fans won't ever subscribe to his irrelevant b.s. What a goal, let's be the next Boise St! -
Is Oregon’s NIL and Recruiting Ahead of Everyone?
David Marsh replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I think it might be a short term strategy as well ... But for an additional reason. I think it might be a better use of resources until NIL deals for prep recruits calm down. This cycle some of the "sleeping giants" have woken up and discovered they do have money and can buy recruits and as a result we are seeing some outrageous prices. And the recruits themselves are all big shots in their relatively small fish ponds and many think they are worth more than they actually are. All this makes for a highly unstable recruiting environment at the high school level. Whereas, the portal is relatively more stable ... In an odd way because there are some rules and regulations around the portal and the portal window is so short. The bidding wars are short, intense and resolved in about a month. Whereas the high school recruits get YEARS to haggle. But I also agree that a portal heavy recruitment strategy has so far failed which is why Oregon has always done a hybrid but this year it feels like there is a greater need to rely on the portal than years past. -
Is Oregon’s NIL and Recruiting Ahead of Everyone?

Great article David. A less visible reaction to the difference between the Oregon way and that of TAMU or USC is that by bringing in proven players who are being paid for their recognized worth, Oregon creates less chance of position room friction than the potentially hidden resentment veterans may feel towards newly minted high school millionaires. That may have played a part in Pregnon’s decision to transfer. Recognized worth is valued by veterans. - Today

Is Oregon’s NIL and Recruiting Ahead of Everyone?
Charles Fischer replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I love the article, David, and the research and quotes to support your points. I agree with this strategy, (especially at QB) but I also acknowledge that, 1) this is probably a short-term strategy until the underclassmen develop more, and 2) while it is an innovative strategy, it is an unproven one. But my bets are on the rest of the elite teams copying this strategy within the next few years. (Then Oregon will shift again?) -

What does that even mean? Boise State had some shocking major bowl wins but they were never a contender for a national championship and will probably never be. -

Only to those who don't understand how to maintain a stable roster. Oregon rarely loses any players to the portal they want. The NIL money is going to the roster and to the players who stay and produce. Much of the Oregon model seems to be come to Oregon and you'll get a fair deal. You'll develop and if you're good enough you'll get paid more and be ready for the NFL. Not a great pitch for those who want to be paid NOW. Which is what USC and others are using. However, USC did lose by far their best offensive lineman to the portal (to Oregon). So they obviously aren't doing a good job maintaining their roster. They lost other prices of their production as well. One thing has remained true even in the portal and NIL era. The rosters with the oldest players who have developed in the program the longest are still the ones winning the national titles. Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia, Georgia are the last four... All had senior heavy rosters who were in the program for a long time. Sure there were some important transfers but they supplemented the team and were often veterans themselves. USC can bring in all the No. 1 classes they want but they won't win anything if they can't develop and hold onto them. -

Oh little brother... John Canzano interviewed the retired commissioner from both the WAC and the Sun Belt, and he gave us that quote. So that is what Beavis aspires to? That they and Texas State hopefully become the next Boise State? Then he quickly added, “It never happened — but maybe this is the time.”

Is Oregon’s NIL and Recruiting Ahead of Everyone?

TAMU & Jimbo should have been a flashing stop sign, but USC and Riley are blasting through it. NIL and the portal have made roster stability archaic, but USC in the midst of a drought thinks making a big splash is a sound strategy. Meanwhile, Oregon, the flashy brand, is playing it cool. -
CFB Format change held up because of a beef between the B1G and the SEC, Naturally? What's holding up CFP expansion? SEC and Big Ten are at a potential impasse on these key issues SPORTS.YAHOO.COM Keeping the playoff at its current 12-team format is a grim reality for some, but it’s a possibility, perhaps even a probability as negotiations creep closer to the Dec. 1 deadline. The PO staying at 12 is better for the B1G than a 16-team field with an 11-5 format. Did the author of this article not get the memo that the Advisory Board member SEC was on board with automatic qualifiers before sucker-punching the B1G? The SEC using ESPN's FPI data to justify staying at 8 conference games is laughable for anyone with the slightest clue. The 2025 FPI preseason ranking has 13 SEC teams in its top 25. If need be, Commissioner Petitti, use a B1G veto and stay at 12 teams.

One of these things is not like the others: Honest Abe, George 'I Cannot Tell a Lie' Washington, Greg Sankey. College Football Playoff format talks go back to drawing board as SEC gains momentum to keep 8-game schedule - CBSSports.com WWW.CBSSPORTS.COM Newly proposed metrics could work in the SEC's favor as it looks to avoid a nine-game slate Will the B1G's Tony Petitti pull a Larry Scott and let Sankey and the SEC get away with this crud? I'd rather see the B1G exercise its 'veto power' and stay with a 12-team PO.

Oregon State can be a feeder program for the Ducks. I'm cool with that. I'm not saying Stars are everything, but Oregon is really recruiting at the absolute top end of things right now. Wheaton the younger just isn't on that list. And frankly I'm not sure Wheaton the elder would have made the cut for this staff. But without Wheaton the elder we wouldn't have this staff today. -
Injury Reporting and Player Availability should be required for all teams for the entire season. OK, maybe not D3 teams? Is Oregon’s NIL and Recruiting Ahead of Everyone?
David Marsh replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Yes... He who shall not be named does use the portal in a way that differs greatly from Oregon. The portal in bulk approach that Kiffin at Ole Miss kinda uses as well. I would say the portal bulk approach is there because they are searching for overlooked diamonds in the portal. There are some absolutely... Benson was fantastic at FSU but didn't emerge at Oregon. But Lanning has something that few teams do... The ability to pick the top talent from the portal and land them consistently. Often taking the BEST players from other teams and treating them like feeder schools. We don't know how all this NIL stuff is going to playout in the near future as the House Settlement is still proceeding. But what's clear is that Oregon isn't going to overspend on high school recruits when they can dominate the portal.
