Is Gambling the Only Reason People Can Enjoy Sports?
Jon Joseph replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
No, but why do you a$k? People have been wagering on sports for thousands and thousands of years. For centuries, gaming was allowed in most of the world except the USA. Wagering is a game within a game, and in perspective, within your budget, is fun. However, it is not, of course, necessary to wager on sports to enjoy the game. Yes, the odds are there in part to 'balance the book,' but over the years, preseason football future bets odds have been more reliable than the myriad polls and projections from folks who have nothing at risk. Is Gambling the Only Reason People Can Enjoy Sports?
Annie replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I never bet actual money on a game, and really the only time I "bet" was on a now-gone sports message board where we were "given" $5,000 to bet and winner, of course, was the one who had the most money at the end of the season (college football in this case). I was the top winner two years in a row (even though I had to concentrate on how to word the bet so that it was what I was trying to bet), mostly because 1) I didn't bet much money and 2) luck. An example of luck was to bet on UConn beating the 44-point spread in a game against Alabama, and UConn losing by only 43 points. -

Power Four conference commissioners jointly addressed the House settlement in a call on Monday afternoon. Even within the hope and belief they all shared in what the House settlement means for college athletes came an acknowledgement there is still plenty of work left to be done. There are still plenty of big questions looming over college sports, including the legality of revenue sharing and NIL from Title IX and enforcement perspectives. Below are key takeaways from what the commissioners had to say on the past, present and future of college athletics as it prepares to take a monumental step forward beginning July 1 when universities can begin directly paying their athletes. * Affiliation agreements not done yet * No sport-specific salary caps * Why a MLB executive will run enforcement arm * Sankey meets with Trump * Leaders still want Congressional help Commissioners address House v. The potential solutions from the WR room are plentiful. Alex has touched upon the obvious, but the room is deeper than that and a dark horse may run to the front of the pack. I project that the Ducks will have guys that get open and can do their things. The larger question looming is what level of production will we get from the QB’s? There is a huge difference in results between great and good. QB play has so much to do with WR production. Go Ducks. The countdown to kickoff continues.

Oregon's Quarterback Recruiting: Panic or Patience?
Charles Fischer replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
And there are pitfalls, costs and risks to that strategy too. What if you had a former 5-Star QB who you knew would be super when it was his turn...and it did not turn out that way? And it cost you a 'Natty? Naw...Georgia fans wouldn't know anything about that! -

I think I saw that Murray State eliminated Duke to reach the World Series, thus giving me another underdog to root for. Plus as I am fond of nothing about Duke (except their academic standards) that outcome was doubly satisfying. So go Racers! -
Oregon's Quarterback Recruiting: Panic or Patience?
Nevada Dawg replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
A cautionary note here: Great portal additions at QB are NOT always readily available. The Ducks were extremely fortunate IMHO to have guys of he caliber of Nix and Dillon G. available when they were needed, and kudos for CDL for scooping them up. But such availability is probably the exception rather than the rule and it is unclear how revenue sharing will impact recruiting of portal options. I do agree that nothing beats experience at the QB position. But a program needs to work hard at developing the youngsters and have some success in so doing to sustain offensive strength over the long run. - Yesterday

Oregon Football: The New WR1
Charles Fischer replied to FishDuck Article's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
As you all know...in the off-season we only have one article a week on FishDuck.com scheduled, although we sometimes get more when blessed with a guest article by Jon Joseph. Thus, I am grateful for the writers, and to Alex Heining for the fun read that gets you pondering... I was pondering the WR issue, and realized that I might have overlooked an important element with a couple of receivers. When you are a junior as Justius Lowe is, or a SENIOR as Malik Bennett or as Gary Bryant Jr. is... you have something to prove. Often we have seen players really emerge when in their final year--to where we hardly recognize the player we knew before. In particular--I have the gut-feel that Gary Bryant Jr. is going to have a B1G year! -
Here is Dickey’s moment to step up to all that prior expectation. Hope he can. If not now, when?

X marks Jeremiah Smith. He said, "You can't cover me 1 on 1" as the saying goes, if it's true it ain't braggin'. 6'3, 219 and OBD were trying to jam him up with CB's who were 5'10, 180. None of OBD's WR's are that, but DeVonta Smith, 6'0 170, won the 2020 Heisman.

The point I am making is that modern football schemes assign somewhat different roles to players, and individual players are better suited for some roles than others. At the website Football Advantage "Coach Martin" states that the split end or X receiver "will go up against man-to-man pass coverage a lot. Cornerbacks will often line up directly opposite them and try to jam them at the line of scrimmage. To be successful at the position, an X receiver has to be either (1) quick or (2) physical enough to break away from this jam consistently. The X's main role is to work the outside of the field, covering both the widest and deepest portion of the field. " Coach Martin speaks only of receiving, not blocking, by the way. Gresham, McClelland, and Lowe are all bout 6 feet tall and 190 pounds. I believe Lowe is thought to have good acceleration. Kasper is 6' 6" and 210; Dickey is 6' 2" and 205. Neither has been consistent up to this point, although both have suffered injuries that have impeded their development. If Kasper and Dickey disappoint, do OBD have anyone on the roster who is well-suited for the X role?

Oregon's Quarterback Recruiting: Panic or Patience?
DanLduck replied to NJDuck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I think the new House settlement might influence future portal picks with NIL deals needing to pass inspection. No more "buying" players. Supposedly. Either way, Oregon will end up in good shape. Our qb room now is stacked. Unproven sure, but hugely talented. I'm willing to wait it out. In Lanning & Co. we trust. Though for uncle Phil's sake, I hope we get that Natty soon!
