Could the Beavers Be Playoff Bound?
Before Jon beats me to it.... the SEC has 3 teams in the top 4. So, two would automatically be 5 and 6 with home games. As long as the SEC plays 8 conference games, this is likely to continue. It does get frustrating that the other 3 conference commissioners always seem to be distracted looking at a shiny object while the SEC commissioner pulls the wool over their eyes in terms of how the rules of the CFP will play out.

This is Serious: We Need an Updated Name for the Pac-12...Can You Help?
The TRANS? Transcontinental if they take USF. Transition if they are all still hoping for a Big12 invite. Transaction looking for money. Transfixed on bitching about former rivals. Transexual if they still long for their original conference and demanding equality.

Could the Beavers Be Playoff Bound?
G5 in the AP poll today 25- Boise St – Mt. West 29- UNLV – Mt. West 33- James Madison - Sunbelt 35- Liberty – Conference USA Unranked American Athletic – Army, Navy, Memphis, Tulane Unranked MAC - Buffalo IF, WSU is undefeated it could get an at-large but it would have to be in the top 12, and five conference champs get a slot (as long as they are top 12). Which means WSU would have to be among 7 at-large. It is No. 26 in the AP today. As of today, Michigan is No. 12 and would likely be replaced by No. 25 Boise St. The other 11 are all Power 4 as of this morning. WSU would likely have to be between 5 and 11. What if the Big12 was No. 13? They would be given the No. 4 slot, and all the at-large would shift down. No. 11 would replace No. 12. So, AP ranked No. 11 and No. 12 would both be out and replaced by the Big12 Champ and the Group of 5 Champ. In many years, the at-large will be the new hotly debated issue. Not only participation, but ranked 5-8 for first-round home advantage. As of today's current AP ranking those 5-8 would all be SEC home games. (2) Georgia becomes (5). (4) Alabama becomes (6). Then Tennessee and Ole Miss. Georgia and Alabama have to slide down to make room for the ACC and Big12 Champs in the top four.

Friday's CFB Games Thread...
Unbelievable game in Pullman. San Jose leads 38-24 end of third. WSU ends up winning it 54-52 in two overtimes. A case of "here you take it", "no, you take it." WSU led 43-38 with 4th Q comeback, then San Jose scored a TD with 26 secs. left and 2 pts for the 46-43 lead. Allowed WSU to go down the field and get in field goal range, bingo 46-46 with 3 secs. left. First OT, San Jose throws a pick. Easy FG in OT for WSU, right? Nope, WSU gets greedy and throws a pick. Goes to second OT. 2nd OT, WSU scores first for 54-46 lead. Then San Jose gets a TD, but misses their mandatory 2-pt conversion. Cougs escape, but San Jose probably should have controlled the game when leading 38-37 (WSU had missed an x-pt)

Friday's CFB Games Thread...
Watching a bit of SJSU at WSU. The image quality on The CW is horrible. It is a bit strange as the field level camera view seems ok, but when the view goes to regular sky view it is like watching one of those history of college football films from the 1960's.

Illinois now has two wins over then ranked opponents: Kansas and Nebraska. You can probably count on one hand (one finger?) the programs that have that stat after 4 games.

The Battle for a Pig Is B1G!
Iowa also has a trophy game with Iowa State. But, most Iowa fans of a certain maturity consider the game with Minnesota as THE rivalry game. For many years it was the last game of the regular season, sometimes played in snowy conditions. When Nebraska joined the Big Ten, the conference "manufactured" a rivalry game with Iowa for Thanksgiving weekend to end the season to create a "rivalry" for Nebraska in the B1G. That shifted the Minnesota game to various dates ranging from mid-October to mid-November. This Saturday is only the third time Iowa and Minnesota have played a game in September in their history. This will be the 118th meeting. Before Simmons who was discussed in that link, Iowa's roster included Duke Slater...the first Black in the College Football Hall of Fame. The stadium field has a logo with his name as the Duke Slater Field. Iowa had Black players as early as 1910. The first Black player on the Alabama roster was 1971.

Looks like the women will have four trips also.

Oregon Basketball Four Road Trips to Midwest
Oregon will play 7 B1G games "back East" with four road trips. Four? Doesn't exactly seem like that falls into the critic's category of miserable... Also, play Beavis on the road in Corvallis. Football has 3 road trips "back East" this season unless they qualify for the B1G Championship game. The 2024-25 schedule: SIDEARM Integrations GODUCKS.COM Season tickets are now on sale and start at only $175 ($11 per game). Fans can visit www.GoDucks.com/MBBtix or call 541-346-8281 to secure their tickets.

Is the Civil War Rivalry Dead?
Since the 2000 season, the Beavers have been involved in 17 losses by 35 points or more, including last Saturday. Four of those 17 were to Oregon. Though only the 7th worst defeat in Corvallis was to Oregon. They lost 6 other home games to Pac programs by more. 14 of the 17 (9 home, 8 away) were to Pac opponents. In that period the worst home loss was to Utah, the worst road loss to Oregon. None of the 17 involved WSU or the Mt. West Four.

Is the Civil War Rivalry Dead?
Missouri vs Kansas is 57-54-9. That Border War statistic has to fit the definition of rivalry. But, in 2011 when Missouri left the Big12 and went to the SEC the game was discontinued. That's 13 years without it. The two programs have now scheduled each other 2025-26 and 2031-32. Two on, four off. Oklahoma left for the SEC this season. The game with Oklahoma St was dropped. Instead of OU non-conference, the OSu Cowboys will play Oregon, Arkansas, Alabama, Nebraska in the next few years. There are no current plans for OU and Okie State to rekindle the Bedlam Series. Obviously those examples involved conference teams which are now non-conference. Appears one series will be periodic, the other is off the books for several years. In both cases, participants will be able to schedule other Power 4 opponents. I could get on board with either approach. Especially since other sports such as basketball and baseball could still create matchups.

Puddles’ Playoff “Flight Plan” in Week Four
"Chip Kelly experiences this condition every time he sees the Ducks rolling on teams like Oregon State without his guidance." Here's a piece of trivia for everyone...Since 2000, the Beavers have lost 9 home games and 8 road games by 35 pts or more. None of those losses were to a team coached by Chip - Ducks or Bruins. (Biggest Chip win 28 pts) Four of the 17 (35pt) were to Oregon: 1 each Bellotti, Taggart, Cristobal, Lanning

The Pac is Back!
As Jon points out, the obvious plan for the Pac is to make the appropriate chess moves to clear the field of CFP competition. Take the best of the Mt. West. Pay up to take Memphis and Tulane from the American. That would position the Pac for the 5th best conference champion and the Playoff. What other competition would be left? The MAC? Maybe. Conference USA, or Sun Belt? Doubt it. That is the strategy. But, whether the Playoff retains a guaranteed slot for No. 5 remains to be seen. I suppose the Pac could attempt the argument that a Non-Four should have at least an At-large slot?

Really? Could Washington State Make the CFB Playoffs?
WSU, cannot be one of the 5 conference champs, because they are not in a qualifying conference. So, they would have to be 12-0 and at-large somewhere between 5 and 12, but one of those is eliminated in favor of the 5th conference champ. More realistically they would have to be 9, 10, or 11 slot only. Fuskies were not ranked when WSU beat them. Tex Tech wasn't ranked. Maybe Boise St will be Sep. 28, and later if BSU wins the Mt. West and Mt. West Championship. If Beavis rights the ship, they might be ranked when WSU visits Corvallis. Not sure where WSU is going to build the resume that gives Canzano his confidence? Idaho is No. 4 in the FCS ranking this week.

Really? Could Washington State Make the CFB Playoffs?
Based on the AP ranking in the third week. Don't invest your life savings. 1-Texas - Sugar - 8 vs 9 2-OhioSt - Rose - 7 vs 10 3-Miami - Peach - 6 vs 11 4-Utah - Fiesta - 5 vs 12 5-Georgia - host N. Illinois 6-Alabama - host Penn St 7-Ole Miss - host Oregon 8-Tennessee - host Missouri 9-Missouri 10-Oregon 11-PennSt 12-N. Illinois

Really? Could Washington State Make the CFB Playoffs?
If, it were based on this week’s AP rankings 1- Texas (SEC Champ) 2- Georgia 3- Ohio St (B1G Champ) 4- Alabama 5- Ole Miss 6- Tennessee 7- Missouri 8- Miami (ACC Champ) 9- Oregon 10- Penn St 11- USuC 12- Utah (Big12 Champ) 23- N. Illinois (Group of 5 Champ) – would bump out USC WSU has no conference championship this season, would have to be at-large. In that ranking, Oregon would travel to Miami.

Ruh-Roh! Beavers Losing Belief About Their Team, and Playing Oregon...
I checked to listen to Mike Parker on the Beavis broadcast after a third quarter Ducks score to hear his reaction and this is what I heard: Parker, "I'm reminded of Job from the Bible, 'For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, ...." (me: the rest of that Bible passage, "and that which I was afraid of is come unto me).'" I think we can all relate to that as fans...when your team plays as a significant underdog you usually have hope, which often gets squashed. I can't remember ever hearing a Bible reference on any broadcast before. That was a new one.

Is Oregon State vs. Oregon Football Series Due for A Pause Following 2025 Season?
Would prefer to see a 2 on, four off, format. For example, 2024-25, then four off, then on again 2030-31. Could use those four years for home-and-home games vs Cal, Stanford, Arizona, ASU, Utah which helps maintain recruiting in those areas. Or, other strategic games such as games vs Texas opponents. It is highly unlikely OSU would ever agree to anything but home-and-home.

New AP Poll - Ducks Stay at No. 9 - Kind of A Crime!
As a little nugget in the AP ranking, the 63 voters range from No. 4 to No. 13. The lone vote at No. 13 is the UW beat writer at the Seattle Times. A graduate of UW, and student paper sports editor while he was there.

Loving Pac-12 Beating the BIG!
The offensive play at the goal line that lost the game for UDub was partial karma for that fourth down dud last year that Lanning called vs UDub.

Let's Discuss! CFB College Football GameDay (All Other Games)
The box score says there were 57,000 for the Apple Cup in a 68,000 stadium. Last week the Huskies had 64,000 at home for E. Michigan. A big win for WSU that apparently a bunch of WSU fans refused to attend.

GameDay Thread for Civil War: Join Us!
Prior to this game, in 2024 season, Oregon State was 7th best nationally in third down conversions....this game 6 of 9. Prior to this game, Oregon State was 4th in shortest distance needed to convert a third down. In this game it seems like most of their thirds are 3 yds or under. Prior to this game, Oregon State led nation in time of possession. 20:54 vs 9:06 (Oregon) in first half.
