Frost was right... in the old model of recruiting it was difficult to recruit to Oregon. Oregon was built on diamonds in the rough and a rare scattering of 5 stars. Those coaches, players and teams all built the Oregon brand. But they just couldn't regularly land high level recruits. Just think of the difference in time, ten years ago (yes 2014 was ten years ago) Oregon was still a rather new flashy brand and Eugene was considered a backwater in the college football world. Fast forward to today, those kids we are recruiting now all remember those Chip Kelly teams when they were kids. To them Oregon has always been a major brand and a major school. Oregon is now a destination in more ways than it was even just a decade ago. Scott Frost WAS right... but he is NOW wrong. Cristobal outworked the opposition in his recruiting classes. Lanning has outworked everyone and has one of the best NIL collectives supporting him, though it is important to note that Division Street doesn't use as much money as other programs but they have plenty to be competitive and that's all that matters. Scott Frost Was Absolutely Right About Recruiting to Oregon | FishDuck FISHDUCK.COM Oregon is hot on the recruiting trail right now. Just last week, Oregon landed 2022 recruit Andre Dollar over Scott Frost and... And also... Helfrich completely recruited inside the Oregon norm. What changed was that Oregon needed to modernize and recruit at a higher level to achieve our current goals. A Defense of Helfrich’s Recruiting Legacy | FishDuck FISHDUCK.COM Mark Helfrich is generally considered the worst recruiter in modern Oregon football history. He is a coach who oversaw some of... Oregon has higher standards and more resources than ever before. And when it comes to NIL, Oregon is absolutely one of the biggest benefactors of NIL. Lanning is the best recruiter in the country, I said it last season and I think it is playing out today as well. Dan Lanning Is the Best Recruiter in the Country | FishDuck FISHDUCK.COM Dan Lanning and company are the best recruiters in the country right now. Now, anyone who wants to go ahead and look at... The Rumors About Ryan Day....Whew!
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Mad Man Dan has him beat. Gotta throw in some wild stuff when it's needed and at times when it's not needed. Day assumes, and rightly so, that his players are more talented than the opposition. But talent doesn't always equal wins, it requires putting those players in position to win. Sometimes that means you kick a punt right at a return man or throw a touchdown to a offensive lineman. -
These are the current Oregon recruiting rankings on the following sites: Rivals: No.1 247: No. 4 On3: No.1 What a time to be a Duck! Also... Oregon has the smallest recruiting class of the top 5 with only 20 commits. Lanning is saving up spots for transfers this off season.

Ruh-Roh! Lincoln Riley to LEAVE USC?
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Why would Riley be interested in UCF? Or is UCF inquiring to see if he'll be fired so they can pick him up afterwards? I have a hard time believe he'd leave on his own. -
This class now has 3 quarterbacks signed. I suspect the signing of the QB out of Wilsonville is more about filling out the roster and ensuring there are scout team players as well. Walk-ons are basically gone on the roster so instead we need to get walk-on quarterbacks on scholarship. So we'll see how this all shakes out. We will absolutely have transfers out at quarterback.

The Rumors About Ryan Day....Whew!
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
The Lanning v Day in terms of coaching and motivation is just night and day (ha ha pun!). During the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry game how do you think Day spent half time? I seriously doubt it was spent taking a sledge hammer to a Michigan helmet. Meanwhile... Lanning absolutely took a sledge hammer to a Washington helmet while Boettcher was walking around with a bat. If you haven't seen this week's Ducks vs Them you should. Lanning motivates and keeps his players focused on the execution. Ohio State looked listless out there. -
The Rumors About Ryan Day....Whew!
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Shockingly people don't actually use spell check. As a high school teacher I have sadly needed to make it an explicit requirement for students to resolve all the red squiggles and use the spell check. Sure they still might pick the wrong word... But it's still better than the alternative. -
I wouldn't say phoning it in. But taking care of business and winning in a year full of extreme drama and chaos is kinda boring. Hey look everyone... Oregon won again. They did it the same way they did last week with a solid performance from DG and James ran from around 100 yards. The defense kept the opponent's score low. It's called consistency. It's not exciting but it wins games.

These numbers show that the Oregon collective is just bringing in 10 mil and that comes in at No. 20. It fits as it sounds Oregon is often not the highest bidder but they know how to be competitive with their offers. The Reality of NIL in CFB Recruiting Today | FishDuck FISHDUCK.COM Dan Lanning and Oregon have been on an absolute tear these last few weeks. It has delightfully resulted in... Oh and hey... I wrote something back last summer talking how a competitive NIL offer only allows coaches to START recruiting. For many athletes want to know their worth is being taken seriously. For some they want the biggest paycheck possible and don't care where they end up but that is a minority by the looks of it.

The Rumors About Ryan Day....Whew!
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
There were a much healthier team that early in the season and were coming off a fairly recent bye. End of the season is when things get messy. I'm feeling even more thankful for our late bye than ever before. -
I'd bet on Riggs for sure.

A Modest, In-Advance Defense of the Playoff Committee
David Marsh replied to jrw's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
My issue is less about the Comittee, at least at this time, and more with the way the bracket is set up. The 5th seed is going to be a top 3 or 4 ranked team and they'll play the No. 12+ ranked team out the gate, as it will probably be the Big 12 Champion and then probably the No. 10 team in Boise State. It feels like Oregon should play the winner of No. 12+ and No. 10 and not a team ranked below us. This has been hashed out to death at this point. But it's a formatting problem and not a ranking problem. -
It's BIG! Oregon vs Penn State for the B1G Championship
David Marsh replied to 30Duck's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I think Oregon achieves more of a Penn State beat down than their prediction. Oregon is built to beat B1G teams and I think they'll beat another one this Saturday. Can't wait! Also, Oregon is looking the healthiest they have almost all season. The offensive line looked really solid against Washington and Iuli is still starting which means the change to the offensive line is working. Hopefully we get Harper back soon. -
"That Game Out West" Feels B1G appropriate "Cascade Clash" Brings in the Mountain range and makes it feel something PNW. But... does it need a trophy?
-
At the same time... they might let a 3 loss team in to the playoff only because they played in the SEC and managed to lose to bad or mediocre SEC teams. Alabama failed to score a touchdown at Oklahoma! So in some regards... counting Ws and Ls is the baseline but I'm not entirely sure they can do that.
-
Predictions already rolling in for Penn State to win this one. Feels normal for the year. Oregon looked far more put together this last game after the bye week. Let's see how that added rest continues to pay off.

Oregon hasn't looked this healthy in some time. I love it.

Huskies? We Gotta Have Some Fun With This...
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
Not going to lie... Family gatherings with the in laws will be better this year. I won't mention the win unless it comes up naturally. And it will come up naturally. -
We'll have to see how the rankings shuffle out for the CFP and then see what comes of the final rankings as well. Right now it feels like there is a north v south bracket. And if they wanted to build a bracket that way that would be one thing. Kinda sucks that it's turning out that way by default.
-
If the Oregon defense plays like they have... Oh boy. Penn State is in for a bad day. Their offense is built on the B1G meta. Run the ball and control the line of scrimmage. Running the ball effectively will set up the passing game for some shots. But running the ball is the central point of the offense. Just need to keep doing what we've been doing.
-
The AP poll out today still puts Ohio State and now Penn State on the same side of the bracket as Oregon. Still not loving that idea. It feels like the No. 1 seed is by far the worst.

The B1G "Surprise" Tour Continues?
David Marsh replied to Charles Fischer's topic in Our Beloved Ducks
I'm feeling pretty good about our chances against Penn State. They follow the B1G meta and we're built to beat that meta game right now. -
I remember Lanning shutting it down in year one. I think it's something the team has had to earn. I think there is some other surrounding culture built into it now too. Use it as part of an emotional energy boost to go into the 4th quarter but they need to use it as such. We saw Oregon su very Jump Around at UW (different than Uw) to use it to boost them into the 4th. It's not a party it's about coming together as a team.

If the loser of the ACC doesn't get in, I doubt Miami has a shot. The ACC and Big 12 conference championship losers will not be treated like those from the B1G or SEC. However, I think if SMU loses to Clemson they stand a remote chance of getting an invite regardless, though I suspect they might be the 12 seed at that point. One of two three loss teams, probably from the SEC, are going to sneak into this thing. I don't like it personally because they have 4 OOC wins that are pretty uninspired. Georgia and South Carolina, however, do have wins over Clemson which are at least decent. The bottom chunk of these rankings are going to be bonkers.
