  1. And Axel lifts my day again with a smile...
  2. The guy who was hitting .095 (yeah, you saw that right) stunned everyone as Jack Scanlon hit a three-run homer to make it 4-3!
  3. Not a bad spot to entertain recruits...
  4. Whoops! The rain started at about 1:45 PM...
  5. The weather report for Eugene was 90% chance of rain both days this weekend, and cloudy the rest of the time. Friday was sunny and bright ... and this morning is the same! At minimum--this helps the recruits see Oregon "in a better light." Hopefully it will hold up through today's practice! Hours before the 2018 Spring Game... (Eugene looks like this now!)
  6. The two tight ends do not have the same number, as it was an error in writing the article. Go to the GoDucks.com link I provided...
  7. The continued growth and improvement of this team impresses me so much with the coaching. Pitching that was sketchy and unreliable last year has improved as pitching kept us in this game, and the new more powerful batting won it for us. Great to see Tanner Smith getting back-on-track to where he was last year, and great to see Anthony Hall coming out of his slump and returning to last year's form. Add these to battling lineup we had and the result is an overall stronger line-up than last year, I believe. A lot of season to go, but I love what I see!

Canzano: Betting the Pac-12 Conference will build its empire in Las Vegas Pac-12 CEO Group meets today to discuss relocating headquarters. LAS VEGAS — The chancellors and presidents of the Pac-12 Conference universities will gather today along with commissioner George Kliavkoff in a secluded meeting space at the Park MGM Hotel and Casino. Among the agenda items for the Pac-12 CEO Group: The relocation of the conference headquarters. The offices and television network of the conference are currently located on two floors in a downtown San Francisco commercial building. Rent paid over the last 11 years: $92 million. The Big Ten spent less than $15 million on its Chicago-based headquarters during the same period. The SEC, which has a sweetheart deal with a booster, only pays $1 a year for its offices in Birmingham, Ala. The SEC’s motto: “It just means more.” Should be: “It costs less.” I think the Pac-12 will soon vote to move to Las Vegas. Here’s why: Las Vegas is easy to access to from the various Pac-12 campuses. It’s already the host site of the conference’s championships in football and basketball. Office space is far more affordable than the Bay Area or Los Angeles. City officials in Las Vegas will also woo the conference with breaks and subsidies in much the same way it did with the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball. Kliavkoff is a central figure in all of this, of course. The 55-year old previously worked in Las Vegas as the MGM Resorts president of entertainment and sports and sat on the board of BetMGM, one of the largest sports-wagering companies on the planet. Nobody will forget the excesses of Kliavkoff’s predecessor, Larry Scott. A couple of years ago during this same week of basketball and meetings Scott bunked in the $7,500-a-night SkyVilla hotel suite at Aria. This week I asked Kliavkoff where he was staying. “Are you kidding?” he shot back. “I’m sleeping at my house.” No charge to the Pac-12. The Pac-12 Conference headquarters has been located in downtown San Francisco since 2011. I like Kliavkoff’s work, so far. I think he’s intelligent, experienced, connected and has big-city ideas. I also think — down deep — he’s a fighter who isn’t afraid of a good scrap. His preferred weapon in a debate is more scalpel than sledgehammer, but I suspect he’s not afraid to use either. He sparred some with media this week and one of his staff members commented afterward, “I think George enjoys it.” Kliavkoff is here for the meetings and the men’s and women’s conference tournaments. But he was questioned during a news conference about his College Football Playoff expansion strategy. The Pac-12 voted “no” in the most recent vote, standing in alliance with the Big Ten and ACC. “So as far as I'm concerned, the time to publicly talk about the CFP is now over,” Kliavkoff said. “I think the next piece of work that needs to be done is we need to get in the room and figure out what the expanded playoffs look like. Unless I'm forced to publicly talk about it, the next time I talk about the CFP will be to announce what our new format looks like.” Who wouldn’t want that guy on their side? Also, why wouldn’t the Pac-12 want to leverage his deep Las Vegas connections and parlay that into lucrative opportunities? Said University of Oregon president Michael Schill: “He’s just the right person to lead us through this extremely challenging period.” Las Vegas has positioned itself as a sports destination. It pried the Raiders from Oakland, launched the NHL’s Golden Knights, is in pursuit of MLB and NBA franchises, and hosted 10 different college basketball tournaments within a walk of The Strip in the last two weeks. “There's more than 100 college basketball games in this town,” Kliavkoff said. “I've been fortunate to go to a couple of games that were not part of our tournament over the last couple of days, and it just is becoming the sports capital, and I think people are realizing that.” That $92 million spent in the last 11 years on rent meant less money for each of the conference members. Also, that expense became a morale issue for those trying to make budgets work on the campuses, particularly during a pandemic. Said one sitting athletic director: “We all could have used that revenue.” The Pac-12 needs a new home. Everyone can see that. Las Vegas feels like the right city. The only question is whether the presidents and chancellors might consider splintering off the Pac-12 Network and putting a small studio and satellite office in the Bay Area, Phoenix or Southern California, where larger pools of available television-world contractors reside. Kliavkoff wouldn’t go there when I about it. But he did tell me this week, “We've actually started negotiations.” He wouldn’t say much more. Didn’t have to. The answer was beneath his feet. 9. I think there must be an error with the article? It says that two tight ends are going to have the number 3? At GoDucks.com it shows that Terrance Ferguson in No. 3, and Spencer Webb is No. 4. Oregon Football: All the Ducks with new jersey numbers in 2022 DUCKSWIRE.USATODAY.COM Spring brings transformation and change. Spring football brings new jersey numbers for several Oregon Ducks.
  10. (Below is the official Press Release about the BIG win last night) STANFORD, Calif. — Tanner Smith hit a leadoff solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to give Oregon a 4-3 win over No. 2 Stanford on Friday night at Sunken Diamond. “I was waiting for a fastball that I could drive, middle in,” Smith said following the game. “I knew I was going to get it at some point. They went to it early in the game, and I got it and put a good swing on it.” How It Happened: Stanford put a pair on the board against Oregon starter Caleb Sloan in the first inning. Making his first career start, Sloan walked the leadoff hitter and then gave up a hit to the two-hitter. Oregon’s defense then let Sloan down. Brock Jones lined out to second baseman Drew Cowley, who threw the ball away trying to double the runner at first allowing the runners to move to second and third. First baseman Jacob Walsh misplayed a Kody Huff grounder allowing a run to score. Stanford added a second unearned run on a fielder’s choice. Oregon evened the score in the fifth. Anthony Hall lined a triple off the first baseman and scored when the next hitter Colby Shade also tripled. Sam Novitske then drove in Shade with a RBI single to tie it. The game stayed tied until the eighth inning, when Oregon (9-5, 1-0 Pac-12) was finally able to take its first lead of the game. Walsh sparked the inning doubling with one-out to put some pressure on the Cardinal (8-4, 0-1 Pac-12). After another out, Josiah Cromwick reached on a hit-by-pitch before Hall had an infield single to load the bases. Tanner Smith Shade drew a six-pitch walk to give Oregon the lead, 3-2. It didn’t stay that way long as Stanford answered in the bottom of the inning, but it could have been worse for the Ducks. Kody Huff led off the inning for Stanford with a double and advanced to third on a dribbler in front of the plate. Drew Bowser tied the game with a double before the Cardinal loaded the bases with an intentional walk and an infield hit with just one out. Reliever Stone Churby (1-0) then got Adam Crampton to ground the ball up the middle were Josh Kasevich shoveled it to Gavin Grant who threw to Walsh at first for the inning ending double play. Box Score Notes: Smith’s home run ran his streak to three consecutive games with a homer, the first Duck to do that since Kenyon Yovan in early March last year … Smith (2-for-5, HR, RBI, R) had his seventh multiple-hit game of the season, and the 44th of his career (10th all-time at Oregon) … Walsh (2-for-5, R) had his ninth multiple-hit game of the season (in 14 total games) … Hall (2-for-4, R) had his fourth multi-hit game of the season and the 19th of his career … Shade (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, BB) finished with the sixth multiple hit game of the season and of his career, while driving in multiple runs for the sixth time this season … Kolby Somers pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save of the season and the 13th of his career, tying Garrett Cleavinger (2013-15) and Jake Reed (2012-14) four fourth all-time at Oregon … RJ Gordon tossed 4.2 scoreless inning of relief, tying a career-high with 5 Ks … Caleb Sloan made his first career start, allowing two unearned runs in 2.0 innings … Churby got credited with his first win as a Duck. Up Next: Game two of the series is at 2:05 p.m. at Sunken Diamond on Saturday. (Watch it on Live Stream by going to GoDucks.com, going to Baseball, the schedule, the game and look for the link.)
  11. SO SWEET! Way to go pitching, and way to go hitting at the clutch!
  12. Up 7-0 after five innings! Wow. She is on fire! What a throw!
  13. I had my issues with Chip Kelly at times, but something I really loved was that motto, “Win the Day.” It really is true, and I think he helped players with that. I sure like what I see of the new culture!
  14. I have not celebrating the virus, and I think you know that. But you are clearly not celebrating “Final Friday,” and that’s fine with me. Now back to our usual Duck discussion…
  15. He would join DeForest Buckner!
  16. You know, I understand what has been said about his speed, but I have not seen it yet and I have my doubts. It will be fun to watch for…
  17. Dumb decisions....mine, or the state? I'll volunteer it as...mine, and like you--let it go at that.
  18. Wowsa. Canzano: Oregon Ducks' basketball loss sends Dana Altman on a new mission JOHNCANZANO.SUBSTACK.COM Coach says the trust factor wasn't there this season. Yep, the tons of experience I was excited about worked against us, as the players thought they knew better...
  19. I am picturing Lanning showing clips of the Georgia defense to the defensive recruits, pointing to it and saying, "we're going to do that HERE." Damn...gets me excited thinking about it! But wait...to offensive recruits he is showing clips of the Oregon offense 2010-2014, and talking about up-tempo, explosion plays from match-ups and tons of scoring. "We're Going to Bring the Oregon Brand BACK." A Fan can DREAM can't he?
  20. Today is the last weekday, while Sunday is the last day that the "mask-mandate" is still in effect in Oregon, and starting Monday--we are completely back to normal as you will not have to wear masks indoors anymore. As it was, you enter a restaurant with it on, get seated at your table and spend the rest of your time there without the mask on, but put it back on to leave. (Stupid-as-hell...I can't make up dumber laws) In our office building...you must wear a mask as you go to the restroom, or walk into the building or out in the hallways, so I've complied completely. However once you are in your own office--you are allowed to take the mask off as everyone in every suite does. Of course if someone enters the building and is sick...just breathing alone gets the illness sucked into the ventilation system and within an hour...everybody in the building is breathing that air. Perhaps that is why I got COVID, in the pre-stage one, in January of 2020. One new habit that I will continue with, is the use of disinfectant wipes in all public areas. The door into the building, the elevator buttons, everything at the Grocery store, etc. I have not got sick since that worst-in-a-decade illness two years ago, and I think the wipes had a part in that. Some may disagree, and others may feel the masks had a role in that too; no biggie, as I am not interested in arguing the points. This is not meant to start a discussion about the efficacy of the masks, or wipes, or this state's rules versus others...I am just wondering if anyone else is celebrating today? I started a diet five weeks ago, but tonight I am raising an Oregon Craft Beer IPA from Bend, Oregon tonight in tribute to our new flexibility. (Actually three IPAs from Bend, as I love Boneyard RPM IPA, 10Barrels Apocalypse and Deschutes Brewery Inversion as well.) It will be a joyous event.... Great to see no restrictions outside for the football team as they practice, and I'm wondering if anyone else is feeling celebratory as I do?
  21. My friends, sometimes when someone steps over the line with a post and hears from me via email, the response I often get is, "I HAD to respond, as I so disagreed with it." I tell this person that I see things written every day that I think are Dumb-as-a-Post, but I have to use Impulse Control, just as everyone else does. Fortunately the comment below is from outside this forum, thus I can share my true feelings about that opinion...and it is what I put into the category of "Stupid-as-Hell."
  22. In the articles below posted from practice yesterday, Coach Lanning makes reference to "a season of growth," and how they need to have a "growers" mentality. It is a cumbersome label, but he is trying to convince the players to do what he revealed about himself in the interview recently with Rob Moseley, where he had a goal for every practice and wanted to learn from each outing. "We're in a period of growth looking for opportunity to make tomorrow and the day after that better than today," he said of his spring philosophy. "What can we get better at right now? Let's be learners and growers. Let's go out here and figure out what can I do better?... I challenged our players to come off the field and go find something you did wrong so you can make sure you don't do it wrong tomorrow or the next day. That was really our focus." It makes me wonder if he is considering this just a "building" year, or a "grower" year as both sides of the ball become accustomed to the new schemes? I think we have more-than-enough talent to make a run at the Pac-12 Championship and threaten Utah and USC, but we don't know what he is thinking. Compared to Georgia....he might have shown up, taken a look and went, "wow--we have a ways to go." Thoughts? (Sorry guys, but you know I like to ponder!)
  23. I did not realize Oregon was leading the conference in many hitting categories. I will admit to being quite nervous about Caleb Sloan being the Friday night starter in the Sunken Diamond! Oregon baseball opens Pac-12 play at No. 2 Stanford WWW.OREGONLIVE.COM The Cardinal (8-3) were the preseason pick to win the Pac-12 this season and have dominated the series of late, winning 14 of the last 16 meetings including two of three last season.
