  1. I mean if you are wilcox, you don't deny it because maybe it propels you to a new contract with cal. As for Mullen's I think he is stuck in a hard spot if he denies it. one it's a conference foe and it may look bad no matter your response. As the AD you had a bunch of players and my understanding BoT that were pushing for a Wilcox hire. As a final note, I've also seen notice that maybe he was offered but it was a deal that no coach would say yes too. Like limiting who can and can't be hired, certain benchmarks across the board, ect. At which point you are offering him just to get the board off your back. All in all i do think there are enough "political" reasons as to why neither would deny the report. As a note, their are so many reports that Wilcox wants out of Berkeley that I can't imagine he would turn down any reasonable contract at this point.
  2. The jag's Dline isn't great... it isn't bad either and they have no real names on the line that many other teams have. Tosh is considered a great recruiter and a good Line coach. if compared to Salave'a I'd say he is a better recruiter and a slight downgrade at coaching. It's worth noting that he was a DC at Bama, but Saban pulled him as the play caller because he wasn't a great play caller. I'd be okay if you made him an Associate Head coach, Dline(or pass rush) position coach and defensive recruiting coordinator.
  3. I'm not sold that Wilcox was offered the job. As others have noted no evidence has been provided that have presented this to be the case. Clearly Canzano has had no issue not only releasing his evidence but he also has done so at the disdain of the people who created it. If he had evidence proving that wilcox was offered i have no doubt he would have provided it.(even if slightly redacted). Let's not forget on thursday the reports noted that Chip Kelly had been offered the job as well. On saturday(the week prior) their were reports that cristobal was staying. All in all I trust that Mullens made the right hire. This isn't to say other coaches couldn't have been offered i do believe there was a NFL offer floated that could have been turned down as well.
  4. KT is a top 5 pick, he probably was one last season but he cemented it with his play this year as well. Do his sack/ Tackle numbers look Elite no, but football is more than just looking at the primary statistics. First the most important statistic is their QB hurry rate. To note, the reason the NFL looks at this statistic is that it is consistent and repeatable. Sacks, forced Fumbles, passes Defended all have a significant level of luck to them. Kayvon thibodeaux is number 2 in all of CFB this year. at 19.5. So on 1 in 5 passes he is causing pressure on the QB. That is an incredible(and improved) stat. Second and I can't stress his pass rushing has increased in the ways that he does it as well. When he first started at oregon he only had one skill, the speed rush(rip). Since then his repertoire has increased tremendously. He's added the speed chop, pull rush(power move), stab, and a swim move. His skill set at getting to the qb has increased in a way that dictates that not only is he learning the correct things but that he is putting in a lot of work to do so. As a final note, KT's numbers also don't look amazing when you look at the level that other schools have gone to to limit him. He has faced the highest chiped percentage in the conference and he has faced doubles from OG/OG than anyone in the league. KT was not only a 5* but he improved at oregon.
  5. I like the look of kenny Dillingham. Is he a bit of a risk, yeah he is limited in his play calling experience and he is only a good recruiter. What I like about him though is his ability to develop QB's. 2016 GA(defacto QB coach) - riley Ferguson threw 3600 YDS and 32/10 TD-INT. 2017 QB/TE - Ferguson threw 4200 YDS and 38/9 ratio 2018 OC/QB(nonplay calling) - Ferguson 3300 YDS and 26/9 2019 OC/QB(playcalling at Auburn) - NIX 2500 YDS and 16/6 FSU has been a slightly different story as the cupboards have been absolutely bare his time there. If oregon can get Elite QB play than that will allow a much quicker turnaround at oregon. Also he may not be the most expensive so you can now go in and put more money on more assistant coaches that may make up for some of his recruiting deficiencies.
  6. Not necessarily true, Kelvin Banks just won't come to oregon, He was sold on cristobal. That's okay. We have the two commits from Bama, they would likely need a coach who has been recruiting them this entire time to consider coming to oregon.(probably won't happen. your best bets on a good hire pulling in a return is Winston from oregon and Jahlil florence from san diego. So even if it is kiffin who most fans consider the splash you probably wont get all of them back. That's okay the importance is the right hire.
  7. Look I've seen in a number of places that mullens needs to make the announcement today to salvage the recruiting class. 1. I honestly think the safe hire will happen quicker than a hire than a good hire. the longer this rolls on the more i think it isn't one of the hires i perceive as safe and 2. This class wasn't going to be salvaged no matter what. Their were and always will be recruits that are tied to the coach and not the institution.(people think of this as bad and it does have its downsides but frankly i think of this as a normal nature, I have followed bosses who have left for different companies in the past because i enjoy working for them and that is worth it's weight.) As a final note, no matter what happened, even if cristobal stayed oregon was guaranteed to have a number of transfers. currently speaking has 86 scholarshipped players(the limit is 85 but partially extended due to covid). when you calculate seniors, current transfers, and nfl draftee's. Oregon maybe has 10-12 scholarships open... we currently have 12 players commited. The order of importance moving forward should be 1. get the right hire. 2. assemble the best staff, staff needs to balance recruiting, coaching and scheme. 3. establish a quality relationship with the current team. 4. recruiting Expect a drop in our recruiting this year and that's okay, we will staff have the best roster in the pac next year and hopefully a coach that either 1. doesn't interfere with the offense or 2. is actually good with offensive play design/calling.
  8. Two things, to note. 1. I think Aranda and Sitake are good coaches(Aranda is significantly better in my opinion). I have no qualms issues or concerns over either's religious beliefs and that should not be qualify/disqualifying factors. My concern with Aranda, from his coaching style, While I can't say for certain, I have heard his coaching is highly reliant on "playing for your teammate and playing for God". I just don't know how well he matches culturally with the PNW.
  9. To add to this about Aranda, My understanding is that he is a big coach on coaching through Faith(he is has been a devout christian his whole life.) While I can commend him on being true to himself and beliefs I don't know how well that would settle in the PNW. Also his ability to draw in coaches seems very underwhelming. his staff is almost entirely from byu or smaller schools. This could be due to his style of coaching as a whole but I really can't imagine wanting most of his staff to follow him to oregon.
  10. Dabo won't work well in Eugene. Oregon will need a coach that embraces NIL, not one that critiques it. Oregon will need a coach that doesn't rely on religious platitudes. Oregon Will need a coach that brings in a strong staff, Dabo has just lost about half of his. Oregon needs a lot of things right now and I don't think dabo hits on most of them. With all that dabo is still a great coach, he is just way more fit for the south than he is for Eugene, and that is okay.
  11. I know a lot of people didn't like the performance of th oline. Not to say I defend it. But this is not the oline that been recruited. Their has been a high number of injuries before the season started, some of Cristobal/mirabals best recruits prior to 2021 have medically retired. Then add in the injuries during the season and this oline should have been significantly worse than they were. We can disagree but I truly think mirabals was an asset to this staff and will be hard to replace. With that said if we can get a coach that has a much more blended approach to weight and flexibility. Than this team can improve across the line.
  12. I think Shambles is a strong word... I'd honestly say this hurts mario more than it hurts oregon... lets look at the oregon staff. Bryan Mcclendon IHC/WR spent most of his career on the east coast Tim Deruyter DC/OLB going to TT Joe Moorhead OC/QB going to Akron Alex Mirabal OL(can assure you he is going with cristobal) Joe Salave'a DL Co-DC Has never coached east of arizona Ken Wilson ILB Has never coached east of Nevada Bobby Williams TE Special teams(has coached everywhere and will either follow Cristobal or be let go and no fan will cry over this) Rod Chance CB's has coached at oregon and minnesota I think he either follows cristobal or is not retained Jim Mastro RB's never coached east of nevada, top target for Nevada head coach job Marcel Yates Safeties/secondary going to TT Aaron Feld Strength, will be following CMC So of the 10 field coaches and the strength 3 have found jobs not with mario(DeRuyter, Moorhead, Yates) and another is the top prospect for another university(Mastro). 4 look to be guaranteed locks(mirabal, Williams, chance, feld) on either following him or not being retained. that leaves the final four. With Bmac receiving the Interim position it looks like the university wants to retain him. Obviously the new coach will have some leeway but I think Mullens may make it a priority. Down the line we also have Salave'a and Wilson. If oregon could retain these three I would be happy with the staff. I think Bmac would require a OC position but if Lane comes in it may be worth him to stay and take the OC position while Lane keeps play calling for a year or two. Salave'a and Wilson are Elite recruiters on defense and if oregon could bring williams back from USC(which he will be out of a job as the Oklahoma CB coach is following Lincoln). The hardest coach oregon has to replace is Mirabal. He was a great Oline coach despite some people moaning but the rest of this staff should be good.
  13. I know this says Ken wilson, but are you sure this isn't meant to say Jim Mastro? My understanding is that Mastro was the one expected to become HC at Nevada, He coached their from 2000-10. Helped pioneer the pistol offense under Chris Ault. As a fan of oregon football I have no problem if Mastro leaves, Wilson is a fantastic recruiter and a great LB coach I want him to stay. I also just looked and bruce Feldman noted Mastro is the one expected to be hired. This doesn't mean we don't lose Wilson, Mastro and wilson have coached together for nearly 2 decades and I could see Mastro promoting Wilson as his DC.
  14. I work in software sales and we have a buyout(release) clause on some of our products. typically speaking the money is never due upfront and is standardized at 120 days from release unless otherwise specified. I am not a lawyer but an upfront payout would be nigh impossible especially due to the nature of how coaching hires happen and likely wouldn't be enforceable in court. Also for 1m/week would seem highly excessive and no agent would let their coach sign that contract. With that said it is still a signed contract, if he refuses to pay his release clause he opens himself up to litigation. Specifically speaking the reason head coaches have release clauses is that when a new coach is brought in they typically cull the previous staff and now the university has to pay those coaches buyouts(unless the follow the previous head coach). In such Oregon would have a solid lawsuit that covers the 8 million, plus damages, plus legal fees. The lawsuit would be against cristobal as he is the owner of the contract. Now if Miami refused to pay cristobal his buyout, than cristobal could sue miami. All in all if miami doesn't pay than Cristobal will be in a very bad place. All this is based on my assumption of release clauses due to my work their could be some differences, in college football. Like it could be possible that the university is only owed their portion of the buyout on a year basis until the original contract is expired. although I still think it most likely due upfront in 120(or 90) days from monday. To close, it is possible that you could add a penalty, again 1m/week is way to high and likely would never be signed but I could see a 10-50k a week penalty for contracts of this size.
  15. The rumor mill is saying that when mullens said he has had his phone blowing up that it was kiffin(his agent). I don't know how true that is, and the sources of the rumor are about right only 60% of the time but I do think if he is calling he is worth the listen. before being hired he would new glowing references from ole miss, FAU, and Saban... We'd also need to recognize that Kiffin probably isn't the stay and coach till he retires at oregon and will make his jump to the nfl if given a shot... so at best we get four years and we would need to set up a succession plan.
  16. This I think would go up more if Salave'a, Mirabal and bobby williams all follow suite. I think their contract buy outs are around 25% of the remaining. Feld would have a buyout. Ken wilson would too. This is assuming they follow cristobal and aren't released from the university. I could see another 3ish million plus added to this because Mirabal and feld are most definitely following cristobal. don't forget they need to buy out the current staff at Miami as well. My expectation is that they will be paying upwards of 35 million to fire and hire cristobal. Then pay cristobal a guaranteed 85 million. Then you have his new staff(oregons coaching staff was making something like 6 million+ a year) so i assume he would want at least that much. that is 170 million over 10 years. all the while the indoor practice facility at miami isn't even a full football field in length... well good luck.
  17. Fentress is not a great sports reporter. I would take anything he says with a good level of doubt... With that said, everyone and their dog knows that mario interfered with the offense. i personally think Moorhead is a great OC and was capped by the mario brand of football.
  18. Part of the issue with the hire for oregon, is it has been a blindside late hire. USC started early and has been looking for sometime. Oregon is stuck with the leftovers. It may be possible to get a pull somewhere but time will always help with the hiring process. and as you pointed out oregon needs to hire before the end of the year. The remaining staff may be able to convince players to hold on but we will need a good coach to finish in february.
  19. If oregon ends up with any of these guys I will be questioning the sanity of Rob Mullens. Also at this point i would rather have interim head coach Bmac as the HC. Quick evaluation of each head coach: Chip Kelly: I still think he has the offensive chops. Reasons not to hire poor recruiting, and he is to loyal to his poor coaching friends. I would put him as my number one out of the six listed but don't take that as me being a proponent to hire him. Wilcox: He has been a below average coach at cal. He got his position from one great year as DC at Wisconsin(in which he was using dave aranda's scheme and players). He promoted Sirmon to play caller as a means to help his friend even though the cal defense has tumbled since. finally he has relied on the notion that cal would be better if garbers didn't keep getting injuries but despite garbers finally finishing the season the finished 5-7 Joe brady: first he went to highschool in Florida(this is mostly a joke about hiring coaches from florida). in reality he limited coaching experience, a total of 8 years. he has absolutely zero recruiting history and he seems way to fresh to manage a team. Bryan Harsin: just put up one of the worst seasons at Auburn in 20 years, he isn't recruiting well and frankly he is very rude. I don't expect him to last long at auburn and auburn should have to pay his buyout after firing their last coach. Kalani Sitake: poor recruiting, while some argue that byu is a difficult school to recruit to(it is), the recruiting at byu still dropped after bronco left. and outside of this year in which BYU did well, his only other good year was last year and playing little sisters of the poor shouldn't qualify him as a good coach. this hire would infuriate me the most. If it is me and i am trying to salvage the class(to some extent) and hire a homerun, start with Dave Aranda, make him say no to you first. He is an elite DC and has been since his time at Utah State. He seems to have a great understanding of what a head coach does and he is from redlands CA(San bernardino) so he won't be looking to leave the conference. Retain Bmac, and Joe Salave'a, DeRuyter and hire Dontae Williams back.
  20. I've been trying to evaluate where in the world they get their idea from... The current top 10 with their upcoming games are as follows 1. Georgia vs #3 Bama 2. Michigan vs #13 Iowa 3. Bama VS #1 Georgia 4. Cincinnati VS #21 Houston 5. OK State VS #9 Baylor 6. Notre Dame ... BYE 7. OSU ... BYE 8. OLE MISS ... BYE 9. Baylor VS #5 OK State 10. Oregon VS #17 UTAH To start oregon would need to win, I think an oregon win would jump them above both OSU, and Ole Miss. Add in a baylor loss and Oregon is sitting at 7th fairly comfortably. Jumping those last three spots to get to 4th seems nigh impossible. Possible but unlikely is that oregon destroys Utah, and the committee evaluates the oregon win over a previous loss high enough to jump ND. Next Bama would need to lose in an embarrassing maner. I'm thinking 35+ points with a lifeless offense and not scoring more than 10 points. Cincinnati would need to loss handedly(14+ points). To me this is the easiest path. to much chaos(michigan losing as well) I think creates a situation in which Iowa could jump us and you then have a lot bigger mess at the top anyway. Essentially you need three clear cut teams(in my designation that is UGA, UM, and OkSU. and oregon would have to luck into the spot with an over evaluation from the committee, Bama being embarrassed to the point that no one wants to see a rematch, and well cinci losing their conference by enough that the conference says you didn't win your g5 schedule. The likelihood of all of these happening along with oregon beating utah in a rounded fashion seems less likely than pigs flying.
  21. I love helfrich, but first, I see no reason why he would return to oregon. And second if he did, it would likely be an unmitigated disaster between Cristobal's recruit first mentality and Helfrich. At this point and I don't like the idea, i would rather see Mastro purely off the fact that you could bring in an exclusive QB coach to coach our QB's who have seemed to have gotten the shaft during the cristobal years.
  22. Only debating the points that I think have a debate to them. as for wanting to coach at his Alma Mater, that could be true, but following his firing from FIU, He was hired at Miami and quit within two months to go to alabama. He could have earned his leverage and eventually became the HC at miami arguably quicker if he stayed at the university. but he picked the better job. I think it should be debatable about recruiting florida. no doubt is it one of the most fertile states and the miami metro produces a lot of talent. With that said Mario is going to recruit nationally no matter what. He has yet to pull in an OT from the state of Florida(because they don't produce very many) and when it comes to recruiting nationally Oregon has the advantage. Would you rather ride phil's private jet or first class delta because that is the money difference between oregon's booster and miami. the next point is how picked apart the talent of florida is. In florida, you FSU, Miami, Florida, Georgia, Clemson, alabama all within earshot taking top 10/20 talent from the state. You also have Ohio State and Oklahoma who have grabbed their fair share from the state. What about California? obviously you have USC. but really no one else. Yes, clemson, bama, OSU, georgia. will grab their player or two form the top 10/20. If you are recruiting though it is going to be much easier to grab your to 3-5 guys from the hotbed of CA than from FL. as for the rest, you are right, family, heritage, city could all be factors but I am not sure how much they weigh vs taking a worse job(personal opinion).
  23. Not to be rude to the Miami fans/pages/university but they all seem very overconfident in what they have. Their is honestly one thing I can think of that Miami has that can lead him away from Oregon. That is his mom. Miami doesn't have better boosters, better facilities, better administration. They likely can't compete in money. They don't have an Athletic Director. If Mario leaves it will be for his mom. That is the only reason he leaves. And given that he helped correct oregon after helfrich and Taggart. Mario will always be a Duck. He proved oregon is a top 10 recruiting place and could win back-back-back pac12 titles. He also will have a fantastic staff in place many of which would likely stay and get promotions rather than follow him out east. I also like the point of why would moorehead leave if he has a chance at being the oregon head coach.
  24. I won't agree or disagree, i think the 9 game schedule is better than playing a cupcake in november... and that all the power 5 conferences should follow suit. With that said, if the SEC and ACC continue to play with 8 games than we should as well. as a point if bama had to play an SEC East team instead of New Mexico state in november. They likely would have lost to either Arkansas(a game they won by a TD, or Auburn(won by 2 in 4OT) to end the season. I think that is better for the sport. I would rather see a bunch of 11-1/10-2 teams debating for the playoffs than the current system of two SEC teams with weak schedules down the line, and Clemson who plays in the absolute worst conference getting in by record.
  25. I'd argue that oregon has been given a relatively generous schedule this year. To start we missed the preseason number 1 and number 3 teams from the south and were given az, col, ucla and col(this should say UT) in crossover play. Second we only played one team off a bye this season(WSU). Finally the schedule was installed back in march. I think this is less of a conspiracy against oregon and more that the conference has been trying to pump viewership by putting games on the friday after thanksgiving so they don't have to compete with other high watched rivalry games. Does it suck, yeah but if USC won like the preseason expectation, or even ASU than this isn't an issue.
