You would think the committee would have some sort of plan dealing with the top two teams from the same conference. Seeds two through four aren’t based on ranking so why should number five? If one through four just go to highest ranked conference champs then the number two ranked team should just automatically be put in the number six slot to set up a one vs two matchup. The whole goal of the playoffs should be to match up the two best teams in the championship not just in an early round.

Great article. I also agree with the props given to Boettcher. To be undefeated and No. one in the country entering the final week of the season requires exceptional contributions from many different players performing many different roles at the highest level. Here's a few more I thought of. Most Improved Unit: Offensive line. After the Boise St game, it did not feel that a special season was eminent. Quite the contrary. It felt like the O line was going to be the thing that held them back yet by the end of the year they were the strength of the team. Out playing the entire Big at their own game in season one gave the Ducks instant cred far beyond the expected dash and flash. X Factor Spark: Tez Johnson. Beyond special teams excellence, defenses needed to game plan for him specifically and that still did not help. He always makes the first defender look silly and if he does that to the second, he's gone. I'd say he's been the most dynamic play maker since DAT. Super Sub: Justius Lowe. Filling Tez's absent shoes was a monumental chore and Lowe did that exceptionally well. He became a legit threat and had to be taken seriously in defensive schemes which was important in spreading the defense too thin to deal with so many threats. Cash Money Threes: Atticus Sappington deserves special mention for being a reliable kicker that can be a difference maker in close games. After Wisconsin I think we all can feel confident that points can be put on the board when drives stall. In the playoffs, this part of the game will have even more significance.

The Ducks will be laser focused on the team Lanning is 0-3 against. tOSU may be looking ahead to the rematch while facing a Michigan team that's looking for a face saving win. Next week will be very interesting.

Another great article! I'm really looking forward to the day that Lanning's high school recruits start filling out the position charts and portal guys come in to fill in a few gaps here and there. With so many portal guys currently occupying the first team slots, it's hard to know who rises up and claims the starter positions and who's going to be playing behind the next wave of portal starters. As of right now, the two and three deep at most positions are being taken by many four and some five star players. I'm hoping they become the starters of the future.

Lanning's understanding of human psychology is so many levels beyond the next level it's nearly impossible to comprehend. These Duck's vs Them videos will generate their own fields of study. The concoction of football knowledge, commitment to team work, education and mental growth and straight up clairvoyance that meld together in his brain make him much more than a mere football coach. What's going on right before our eyes is so far beyond to sheer wizardry of the Kelly years. We are a very lucky fan base. The team is a very lucky group of players. The amazing video production crew is very lucky to have access to such unreal content. The only ones not lucky are the ones up next on the schedule and this week it really is THEM!

Thank you DanL I really don’t get why the undefeated number one team in the country must submit superiority to the SEC. Until somebody actually beats the Ducks, NOBODY has proven that they can. Was Wisconsin a close call? Sure. They were also outscored 10-0 on their home field in the fourth quarter while being held without a first down and shoved back deep in their own territory the entire time. Boise St was three and outed on their final possession then quickly marched back to their own end zone before OBD simply wound down he clock before kicking the game winning field goal. Not even the number two team in the country can claim to have dominated the Ducks in crunch time. Someone’s going to have to prove they can do it before I give OBD an automatic L.

Wait! There’s more. By trying to trip up OBD with a grueling eight games in a row, they will go from the most exhausted team in the regular season to the most rested team in the playoffs.

Nice article. And to follow up with Jon's excellent post, not only did OBD play eight conference games in a row, with UCLA and Washington bookending the schedule, they played seven pre expansion BIG teams in a row with no break. The BIG did what it could to wear down the Ducks and keep their traditional super powers at the top of the standings but it didn't work. The final quarter of that murderous schedule saw the Ducks win it 10-0 in completely dominating fashion. Now they can finally get some rest, heal up, thump the purple pups and get ready for the second half of the season.

No joke Charles. Before that play I said here's his Heisman moment and did he deliver. On the run, being pressured and throwing back across his body. Drift that ball a little more to the right and the mid field defender can deflect it or it's a more difficult catch. Drift the ball a little more left and it's a sure pass break up. It was a money throw in a money situation.

This game against Wisconsin was like Kelly against Stanford and Mario against ASU and had upset written all over it but they won it on the road by winning the fourth quarter 10-0. That is impressive.

Man I was all excited about an upset alert then Northwestern goes all Northwestern with a 3rd down fumbled snap followed by a blocked punt downed at the one. 14-7 tOSU. Buckeye getting out played but it doesn't matter.

After OBD just defeated tOSU, Lanning was roaming the field like a rabid animal slapping and shoving his assistant coaches around like he was looking for a street fight. Riley's demeanor looks like he's complaining to the maitre d about his fillet min yon. They've got the coach they deserve and so do we.

That disturbance in the force you just felt was millions of SUC fans crying out at once.

What makes Lanning great are four main things. One: Football IQ Two: Tenacious Recruiting Three: Amazing motivator Four: Superior resources With OBD he will always have all four and will be able to compete at the highest levels into infinity. In the NFL, he can only bring Number one with him and everyone in the NFL has that all ready. Since it's clear he won't be making a lateral move in college, the powers that be can only hope he jumps to the NFL. In less than three years Lanning has taken his first team all the way to No. 1 and is now the favorite to win the Natty. I'm sure there are many out there that are upset by that and can only hope something happens to change this trajectory because it is looking like it won't be changed on the field any time soon.

Could they threaten to fire him and renegotiate his contract? If they can legally give him the axe, he would pretty much have to do it.
